Which underlying numbers are those exactly? lol……

The Canucks are below average on essentially every 5v5 shot metric.

20th in CF%
23rd in SF%

19th in HDCF/60
20th in HDCA/60
21st in HDCF%

19th in xGF/60
16th in xGA/60
17th in xGF%

They are being carried by an unsustainably high PDO. To put in perspective of how unsustainable, they are currently rocking the highest PDO since the stat began being tracked 15 years ago by more than half a % point.

Why do you suppose the thread was created originally? Because the hockey world loves the Oilers and their fans? I think you have the order mixed up.
Blame the media. I never thought we were cup contenders with the defense and goaltending. All the shit from Sportsnet and TSN got inside of people’s ears like a worm.

Canucks are due for a massive regression at some point

Shit kicking Edmonton for 3 games will do that, they’ve already regressed and are playing at a sustainable level

Shhh, they usually hibernate during winter and come out during summers. This year the wagon is out in full force and they actually think their team is going to do something

Got it…..no idea how but Oilers are going to “just play better” and make it. Solid. Case.

I don’t think the goaltending will hold and they have a challenging schedule in Feb.
Are you suggesting that they're playing the same quality of hockey in the last seven games that they did in the first 18?

They're doing exactly that--playing better--showing that their poor play may have been the anomaly. And that sub-0.900 goaltending was the unsustainable stat.

Earlier this year Crosby vs Bedard was a dud.

Then Bedard vs Ovechkin tonight will be a dud

Tuesday is the real show.

Connor McDavid vs Connor Bedard

Televised in the US, people will quickly see just how far Bedard will need to go to be on McGoats level.

The master is going to put on a show. Stay tuned.

They have won 2 straight and sit 2nd in the pacific. A +34 goal diff, 3 players top 10 scoring, top scoring D man and a top 3 goalie.

So, since this was a game in hand before today, do the two points even count?

Edit: I see @Tobias Kahun already asked. Inquiring minds want to know!
Try harder.

lol keep wishing, maybe you'll get a second Christmas miracle to go along with that hilariously phony shooting percentage the Canucks have.

Nope….it’s quite simple really.

It will take somewhere between 92-94 points to earn a playoff spot this season. The total points available at the start of the year is 164 (82 games * 2 pt).

The first 24 games Oilers gained 23 points for a 0.479 win % (23/48). They need 69 points to hit the 92 point mark.

There are 116 points still available of which the oilers need at least 69 points to total 92. That is a 595 winning percengage, which is totally doable by Edmonton standards.

Now….if the NHL only had Wins or Losses it would be this simple.…the problem is the NHL hands out points for losing. So you will get OT wins against LA and Calgary (for example) but only gain 1 point on each. Very frustrating. It’s partially why looking at games at hand can be very deceiving.

Last year Calgary had 17 points from losing in OT.
you really spent time typing out all those words for the simplest thing in the world lol. 94 points to make playoffs. oilers currently have 25 in 25. 69 in final 57 isnt that wild. 1.2 standings points per game. oilers did better than that rate in both of the last 2 years where they also had a brutal month.

You don’t think it is reality that losing games at the start of the season puts your entire year at risk? That losing games outright this early gives away points too early?
If you made this claim 10 games ago, I would completely understand your point and agree with you. But you came in "just a few days ago" with your math saying that it would be a major feat for the oilers to make the playoffs. What? Then you mentioned games in hand don't matter. What? We win one of the games in hand and are essential in a wild card spot with 2/3 of a season left and you are still being stubborn about it.

The Oilers may or may not make the playoffs. But if the season started today they would already be set to make the playoffs. All they need to do is play like a regular playoff team would have from the start of the season starting now and they are in. No magic required.

Read it again…..and don’t put words in my mouth. Never said anything about quality.

What makes you think the Oilers can still be cup contenders and not bust? What changes were made? What changes do they need to make?

Try harder.
Those 3 scorers will soon be replaced by 3 from Edmonton 😄

Oilers now have 6 players with 20 or more points. Even more than that vaulted Canucks.

All this after getting thier sxxxx kicked in by your lovely Canucks 3 times. Count your lucky stars as that's the only reason the Nuck's hold onto that spot for another month ...

You should tune in on Tuesday. McDavid will teach your homeboy what a generational player looks like.
