Well the first period of this game was a microcosm of the issues with this team. These are issues which were evident in the first 4 weeks of the season and the last 6 weeks of the season.
Thats 2 and a half months of this season where its the same issues over and over and goaltending is only part of that.
In the first period the Oilers outshot the Ducks 14-9.
Of those 9 shots the Ducks had 6...thats right...6...uncontested 10 bell chances.
That is a joke. One of many examples illustrating why stats alone DO NOT tell enough of the story.
The Oilers puck management and D zone coverage was brutal.
It was great that Draisaitl scored (and gave the Oilers a 1 - 0 lead) but he was directly responsible for 2 uncontested 10 bell scoring chances against.
The first one was a turnover just inside the Ducks bluline which resulted in a breakaway....Pickard made a great save on that chance. The 2nd turnover was behind his own net...put the puck right onto the stick of a Ducks player alone (of course) in front of Pickard. No chance for Pickard. Game tied 1 - 1.
The 4th Ducks goal by Mactavish was a statement goal for just how bad this team is defensively.
MacTavish was completely alone out in front of Pickard for a full 5 seconds...not an Oilers player in sight.
How ridiculous.

Poor Pickard.
Brutal puck management...brutal D zone coverage and absolutely no attention to detail at all from this team in the first period. Pickard gets the hook but his teammates are the ones who should be embarrassed.
The 2nd period...more of the same. Anaheim making the Oilers work for their chances...the Oilers gifting chances to the Ducks which is again evident on the 5th Ducks goal.
Strome with a wide open chance in tight.
5-1 Ducks after 2 periods.
No change in the 3rd either...more of the same. The Ducks creating turnovers in the Oilers zone with their forecheck and the Oilers sleepwalking their way through the game.
This team is SO easy to play against that a non playoff team like the Ducks can come into Edmontons barn and kick their ass.
I have siad this a 1000 times by now. A new goaltender will NOT solve these problems.
He will at best only temporarily mask them.
Its the players in front of the goalie thats the primary problem.
They had more puck possession and lots of perimeter shots but that onviously isnt going to get the job done offensively when they are so spectacularily leaky in their own zone.
This team needs a long look in the mirror because right now they just dont care enough to play with structure and a commitment to winning.
Its gut check time because as of right now this team is not a contender....its a pretender.
