again, that's embarrassing during a Cup window a journeyman D making league min. is vying for a top 4 spot
This is just a consequence of the salary cap. Florida had Niko Mikkola playing in their top 4. He was no longer at league minimum, though he was just a few years ago. Otherwise he fits your description. Now if the Oilers don't do something later to address this I'd be surprised.

Oilers could match Holloway but why would they. I highly doubt that would sit well with McDavid and Drai. Whereas the guys would have understand Broberg's situation.

Just so absolutely comical (and predictable) that many "fans" that were calling Holloway and Bro busts are now losing their shit that we lost these 2. Just whatever they can do to shit on the Oil. Pick a lane, fellas.

This. Neither player did much of anything for the Oilers during the regular season and were just here and there in the Playoffs with some moments. Yet, the Oilers were supposed to keep bit players at 2-4x their worth especially with players coming in a reduced contracts and the rumored hometown discounts coming from McDrai?

I get it sucks to lose prospects because it makes the future a bit bleak but Oilers are trying to win now. Personally, idgaf what happens to those 2 if the Oilers manage to win 1 cup. Those 2 [esp Broberg] didn't want to be part of this so whatever to them

He was probably 6. Battling with 6/7/8/9 for that 4th spot before moving Ceci.

Ceci was 7, Vinny was 8. Only difference now is we have a viable replacement for him and cap space to improve. Being mad about that seems odd
Sorry but Stecher was never better than Ceci

again, we are back to hoping and praying everyone turns out and waiting for a saviour at the deadline with little assets to acquire him
We are doing the same thing if we kept Broberg, but without the cap flexibility

Imagine how cooked we are if Broberg can’t play 20 mins a night, or play bottom pairing minutes?

He’s showed nothing that’s he’s worth that gamble at 4.5, if he was making 2 mil, it’s an easier pill to swallow. You aren’t looking at the situation rationally. If kept broberg we have no bullets for upgrades or roster flexibility.

I could be wrong but wasn't Broberg playing LD/RD just before his draft or just after? Ideally you don't play them on their offside but once again their hand was forced to get Ekholm because Broberg wasn't even close to taking the next step.

TBH the only games he's looked even passable were in these last playoffs playing his offside
He’s moved back and forth going back to when he was playing in the SHL.

There was just so much risk matching Broberg, he would be under a metric ton of pressure to live up to that overpay contract on a contender and what do you even do? Just hope a kid with 80 games can play tough top 4 minutes on his off hand side next to Darnell Nurse? Or spoil the kid by matching the contract and then rearranging your blue line to coddle him? What kind of a message does that send?

If he bombs then instead of talking about not getting the best value for him, next off season we’re talking about whether it’s better to pay to unload his contract or buy him out.

And funny enough, if Stetcher is healthy he slots in ahead of Broberg, Broberg never sees time in the playoffs, doesn't get an offer sheet, and we likely ink him to a low value contract.

Negative to being in the cup final I guess. You've got eyeballs from 30 teams on you.
Incorrect. Paul Coffey wanted Broberg called up according to Stauffer earlier this summer. So no Stecher was not ahead of him or Ceci or anyone.

Defense is looking tough right now - anyone arguing that we arent worse right now is out to lunch,

However, I believe this team is good enough to buoy that defense until reinforcements arrive. Its obvious we wanted to maintain cap flexibility to add later, and I think we have a few guys who can play close to replacement level and help us tread water till we find a player to plug in.

Yet they left him down and traded for Stetcher. So yes Stetcher was ahead of him for a time. Only time Broberg drew in was once Stetcher was out for the season injured.

This, plus the fact that having him on the roster underperforming at $4.5M means it would be essentially impossible to upgrade at the deadline.

This could end up as a win win situation for both team. Too early to cry about our defense when that's not the final product
