This. Neither player did much of anything for the Oilers during the regular season and were just here and there in the Playoffs with some moments. There was just so much risk matching Broberg, he would be under a metric ton of pressure to live up to that overpay contract on a contender and what do you even do? Just hope a kid with 80 games can play tough top 4 minutes on his off hand side next to Darnell Nurse? Or spoil the kid by matching the contract and then rearranging your blue line to coddle him? What kind of a message does that send?

If he bombs then instead of talking about not getting the best value for him, next off season we’re talking about whether it’s better to pay to unload his contract or buy him out.
