Yet they left him down and traded for Stetcher. So yes Stetcher was ahead of him for a time. Only time Broberg drew in was once Stetcher was out for the season injured.
In the playoffs, Paul Coffey wanted Broberg called up.

We are doing the same thing if we kept Broberg, but without the cap flexibility

Imagine how cooked we are if Broberg can’t play 20 mins a night, or play bottom pairing minutes?

He’s showed nothing that’s he’s worth that gamble at 4.5, if he was making 2 mil, it’s an easier pill to swallow. You aren’t looking at the situation rationally. If kept broberg we have no bullets for upgrades or roster flexibility.
Prepare for a reply about how awful Nurse’s contract is and some ramble about how cap space doesn’t matter at all.

Same as we were before, which is actually some good work done by Stan considering what we just went through. Broberg was not the answer for 2nd pairing RHD, as he sucked at it. We would still be looking at finding a Ceci replacement regardless.
Even though I don't like us losing Broberg, I might be more upset if we matched, he just isnt worth that money at this point.
Our forwards are slightly better, goaltending unchanged and our back end is slightly worse. The big difference is we have some cap flexibility. This is huge (amazing when you consider we are paying out 6.5M in dead cap and bonus carryover) and the off season isnt over yet either. lets see what happens yet.

Oilers could match Holloway but why would they. I highly doubt that would sit well with McDavid and Drai. Whereas the guys would have understand Broberg's situation.
One other possible consideration here is that had they matched they would probably had to waive Lavoie. In the current situation they can probably keep him on the roster if he shows well.

Ceci, despite his warts...is a decent #5

now we got got 3 "maybes"
I'd say we have one "maybe" in Emberson. Stecher is what he is. A puck moving depth guy who has issues along the boards and in front of the net because of his size. J. Brown is what he is. A big, strong penalty killing specialist who skates okay, takes some dumb penalties, and has never been more than a #6. Emberson is the "maybe". Is he an AHL guy? Is he an emerging NHL guy? Does he have 2nd pair upside on a team that wants to be a contender, given that he did well as one on a bottom feeder, or did playing okay on a bad team make him look better than he actually is? Emberson is the maybe. The other guys are going to be what they were signed to be.

He’s moved back and forth going back to when he was playing in the SHL.

There was just so much risk matching Broberg, he would be under a metric ton of pressure to live up to that overpay contract on a contender and what do you even do? Just hope a kid with 80 games can play tough top 4 minutes on his off hand side next to Darnell Nurse? Or spoil the kid by matching the contract and then rearranging your blue line to coddle him? What kind of a message does that send?

If he bombs then instead of talking about not getting the best value for him, next off season we’re talking about whether it’s better to pay to unload his contract or buy him out.

Agreed, if we matched and he started slow he was going to be drawn and quartered in the streets by the fanbase.

I don't love losing young players, and I do think both will be NHL regulars for years but where the team is now I am completely fine with not matching.

of course it's a risk...but this organization knows him better than anyone
it's a better risk than allowing unknowns and journeymen play top 4 defense and "babysit" Nurse IMO

This, plus the fact that having him on the roster underperforming at $4.5M means it would be essentially impossible to upgrade at the deadline.

Him underperforming at $4.5M literally could cost the team a cup. Obviously it is never a guarantee regardless, but you sink that money into him and he doesn't perform like a top 4 d man, you are f***ed.

Instead, you now have the flexibility to add a proven guy at the same price level or maybe even higher at the deadline. One that is for sure going to give you top 4 minutes.

I initially wanted the Broberg deal matched, but the more I look at it, the better it is they were let go.

To keep Broberg we would have needed to send out another 3 mill in cap, you realize that right?
So what other player on top of Ceci would we be sending out to make room for the maybe in Broberg?

no? I don't remember anyone saying "boy, I'd like to see Josh Brown, Emberson and Stetcher replaced these guys"
Josh Brown is actually a very good comparable to Desharnais. He takes more penalties because he plays more physical, but he's cut from the same mold - a big, strong penalty killing specialist who can be your #6, but ideally should be a #7.

How many times did fans panic when a samarukov, bear or Caleb Jones was traded? Find that there is an element of fan base that way over rates prospects on this team.

Broberg at the end of the day was a prospect and was not worth this obscene offer. St Louis is who knows how many years away from being a playoff contender and with a ton of cap space can behave silly.

It would have been silly to pay Broberg such an outlandish price when he's still a prospect at best.

…because Stetcher was injured.

Glad to see you’re getting it. He was behind Stetcher on the depth chart.
Yes. But not behind in the depth chart. Stecher was #4 for RHD, Broberg #4 for LHD

Could be wrong but I think they've both scored more goals in their career than Skinner has. Blaming a goalie for the team getting shutout is wild.
I was wrong on the game. Was thinking Canucks.
But this was about Stecher seeing to small. You did a nice change there to get something correct

I believe if we keep up the cap we can add a 4mill cap hit guy at the deadline, 8 mill with 50% retention.
