Greasing the skids to make it easier for EDM to agree?

Edit: Or possibly a "here's some extra stuff, please don't be petty about this in the future"?
Broberg & Holloway for 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, & okay prospect….

Well played Blues

The inflated contracts for the RFA made the guys damaged assets for the Oilers. They were going to make a reported 3.9M more in total than what they were negotiating for. 3.9M is too important right now

Will be interesting to see how Broberg does this season. Either way, good for STL to add two young players with just a 2nd and 3rd.

What does Edmonton's Defense look like now?

Ekholm - Bouchard
Nurse - Brown/Stretcher/Emberson
Kulak - Brown/Stretcher/Emberson

I'm not sure what the pairings will be, but I imagine they will be looking to add a top 4 RHD during the season

Sucks to lose young, cheap talent that would have been much needed depth, but the young talent is no longer cheap.

Well played, Blues. Hard to blame the players when they got over 200% of what they were even asking for.
For Broberg it was $2.2m over 2 yrs from the Oilers vs $9m over 2 yrs from the Blues. Who wouldn't jump at that offer?

Kind of surprising if true.

What's next for Edmonton? Ceci & Broberg (most likely) gone.

Are they making a move for some other d-men?

Also Askarov wants out, are they going for him? They need a G.

Why? Skinner did well in the playoffs outside of the beginning of the Canucks series. He otherwise wasn't really out goalied the entire playoffs and he played well in the regular season. He's underrated still from when the Oilers didn't play any defense 2 seasons ago.

Does this make the Blues a playoff team?
They are both depth guys unless they take a big leap next season. St.Louis was the best team out of the playoffs, so they really don't need much to enter next year. I'd say luck (injuries,PDO,etc.) will be a bigger contributing factor than both of these guys.

I can hear the tires screeching on the car that was speeding forward screaming “Broberg and Holloway are young players with tremendous upside” Tokyo drifting into the 180 of “these guys both suck I am glad they are gone”
I member when Ken Holland was callled an idiot for drafting Broberg....now that's he's not an Oiler, he'll be considered a stud with tremendous upside

Also overpaying so that you had to dump hayes as well.

2nd+2nd+3rd+3rd for Broberg and Holloway. Should have just negotiated with edmonton and got a more reasonable AAV

We had to pay to dump Hayes regardless. If you really want to look at it through a scope like that you need to add in that one 3rd came from taking on Matthieu Joseph.

See a lot of analysts suggest a 2nd is not enough for Broberg in a trade value. So when i look at it all a 2nd + 3rd + 3rd for Broberg Holloway and a 5th.

Honestly I pick the Blues
There's 2 ways to look at it.

In isolation, the Kotkaniemi (3rd overall) offer sheet for a 2nd was a steal. But Kotkaniemi at $6m is horrible.

In isolation, Broberg for a 2nd is a steal.
But Broberg at $4.5AAV is terrible.

The timing of the Ceci and Podkolzin deals make me wonder if the Oilers were trying to pull off matching both deals and/or matching Broberg and keeping a healthy Kane - but they just couldn’t get a third deal done to clear the decks enough.

As I said when this all came out…the move of “intent” for the Oilers was either to match both or let both walk, not do the wish washy thing of matching one and letting the other go. They now have some breathing room - whether that was designed for letting the two RFA’s walk or designed to attempt to keep them, with a fall back of “if we can’t pull this off, at least we’ve created extra space.”

I think Kane is really the issue here - whether it’s just that he’s going to be impossible to trade down the line OR the Oilers looked at everything and said “hell, if Kane is healthy for the playoffs, he’s a better asset than anything we are talking about here - and we aren’t going to liquidate what little draft capital we have left to move him off the roster.”

Sure, for Broberg at the 1.8 mill AAV he was asking for it isn't enough in trade value

When you pay him an extra 5.6 mill total that changes the equation significantly.

Changing any players AAV by nearly 3 mill will significantly change their value.

During the season?!?!?! I think its more between now and training camp. That is not a Stanley Cup playoff defense.

Oilers are cooked !!

They lost arguably their 2nd best PKer after Ekholm in Desharnais and a big body that made it very difficult for opposing teams to establish net front presence or get a shot on goal .

Biggest loss is they are losing 2 of their biggest unsung heroes last year in the playoffs who helped them get to game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals in Holloway and Broberg. Holloway has put up amazing numbers in every league he has played in and only gotten better year after year and as a rookie looked tremendous. He's a gamer and big and fast and skilled.
Broberg same as Holloway performed amazing in the playoffs and is a young puck mobile dman at 6'4 212 lbs and has boat loads of untapped potential still .

Not sure if an unpopular opinion or not but Foegele is a big loss for them as well who performed above and beyond expectations in the playoffs with his relentless forechecking and great 2 way play . He is big and super fast and skilled who was also one of their best PKers as well . There were many times he created offense all by himself and secondary scoring is huge and crucial in a long playoff run . NGL his speed and number obv had me mistake him for Mcdavid a couple times .

Wow Oilers have gotten smaller and less mean and are worse overall for it .
Just wait until the Oilers take the Kings again this year in 4 games.

Kotkaniemi was a 1st and 3rd round pick.

Thats the thing about offersheets you have to pay.

If Broberg ends up sucking well the 2nd is roughly a 15% chance at a NHLer

I think its safe to say Broberg will be a NHLer just perhaps not 4 million dollar one. If you have cap space they came ahead.
