You are arguing we shouldn't trade a younger, cheaper player for him while citing having 'no cap space' as the reason.

I am arguing we should trade for him and deal with other contracts potentially stopping us from making the deal (IE trade waive etc Zuccarello, Boyle, Pyatt, Asham)

We have limited space under the summer cap also. We need to get Stepan signed first. Or we need to clear cap space first. Trading for Clifford and then trying to clear cap space for him after the fact is a bad idea.

Rangers have a NYE game in Florida. Rangers play in FLA the day before Thanksgiving. The Rangers always seem to be in FLA for Thanksgiving. A few years ago too.

A Panthers beat writer leaked the schedule

20 day break for Olympics. What a waste.
That wasn't from a Florida writer. Some guy named Matt Stein tweeted it at George Richards. It wasn't posted by Richards.

More about Matt Stein:
my girlfriend is sooo pretty :) islanders season ticket holder, section 329 BOA, diehard jets fan, proud member of red sox nation, hating the yanks & rags 4Life

It may very well be legit (I mean, he does have a pretty girlfriend), but let's not jump the gun.

You think the NHL shouldn't let the players go?

Now that we have some labor peace, the last thing the NHL needs to do is pick another fight with the union. And how many European players might decide to take the Kovy way out if they aren't allowed to play for their country?

It isn't worth the fight.

Seemed like it happened literally every year other than last year (don't think it was scheduled even if we didn't lockout)

Olympics are enjoyable hockey. It doesn't kill us once every 4 years to do it.. it isn't a waste at all. Come on.

how about something around Del Zotto and Kyle Clifford and 1st round pick to Rangers

Dennis Bernstein ‏@DennisTFP 37m
League source tells TFP Kings Kyle Clifford will be shipped out of LA but Habs are NOT in mix in prospective deal "No chance to MTL"

Del Zotto and Mats Zuccarello to Kings for Kyle Clifford Tanner Pearson Colin Fraser and 1st round pick 2014

Try to get Alec Martinez to Rangers in that equation

Trading either Stralman or Boyle would be stupid right now. If a kid comes up and outplays either, ship them off at the deadline. If Paul Gaustad can get a 1st rounder as a pending UFA at the deadline, Boyle definitely can.

I have said value of Boyle is late 1st, and the Dylan Olsen yardstick, which was well received by both bases proves it.

Of course, if I brought this up on my own to begin with, we know what most would say...:D:naughty:

Ah yes Kyle Clifford. The typical 20 point player who can't score because we need more of them.

I remember people saying things like this last offseason, and I also remember people complaining about our bottom-6 for the majority of the season.

We are out of room in the bottom 6 to fit another player. He's not better or is just barely better offensively than the wingers we have (Pyatt/Pouliot/Dorsett/One of Zucc/Kreider/Hagelin). They won't give him to us for someone useless that he is better than and who we don't want like Powe/Asham (and they are only 2M below the cap themselves). So basically it won't work.

The way to improve the bottom 6 is by improving the top 6 and then forcing players down. Not by acquiring more redundant pieces.

Clifford actually produced at a very strong ES scoring rate last season. Would have been 5th on the Rangers.

Problem is where are we getting the assets to acquire this top 6 talent? Upgrading the bottom 6 and tossing other players away is the ideal way to fix the bottom 6 for now, especially given our cap situation. I'd like Clifford and he'd be a very good bottom 6 player but we do have quite a logjam of those players. It also can't be ignored that we do need at least one more physical presence that can drop the gloves.

But it's not possible. Our bottom 6 is already full of similar players. Pouliot/(Zucc/Kreider/Hagelin)/Pyatt are all better than him offensively (unless you want to only focus on Pyatts worse offensive year while simulatenously focusing on Cliffords best - then I supposed Clifford is better offensively) and Dorsett is comparable.

We're not going to get him by giving up our spare parts. We're low on cap room as it is. The kings are low on cap room.

Sure but this is only true if you want to focus on a small sample size (he plays few minutes = more time for variance + shortened season). I mean his ES-pts/ES-min was better than Callahan, Zucc, Gaborik last year and he's certainly not better than any of them. Put those ahead of him along with the guys who actually were (for forwards) which is (Nash,Stepan,Richards,Hagelin - excluding few games from Clowe/Brassard) and now he's 8th on the team offensively and ranked 6th among wingers and right back to your 3rd/4th line tweener.

So glad we kept Richards. Stepan missing camp is gonna be awesome.

oh come on, it has nothing to do with Richards.. IF Stepan misses camp (which I doubt he does) it will be because he's asking for more than the Rangers are willing to pay him, With Aaron Johnson sent down + the 3.3M we have in cap space, we could give Stepan 4M per year.

What if he wants more than that? Talks are going nowhere, and he probably wants what McDonagh got.

a trade for Kyle Clifford just screams a Sather move......doubt it happens but I wouldn't at all be shocked if it did.

Group II's without arbitration rights are always laggers. There is no urgency or leverage.

Contract talks between the Vancouver Canucks and defenceman Chris Tanev are lacking urgency, Tanev’s agent Ross Gurney said Monday.

The 23-year-old Tanev is a restricted free agent without arbitration rights. He can entertain offer sheets from other NHL clubs but the Canucks would have the right to match. Tanev made $900,000 last season, his third as a professional.

“We have dialogue from time to time but it’s been very, very slow moving,” said the Vancouver-based Gurney. “Restricted free agents without arbitration rights are in a classification all their own. There doesn’t seem to be any urgency right now but, eventually, we’ll make progress.”

http://blogs.vancouversun.com/2013/07/15/no-urgency-in-tanev-contract-talks-says-agent/

Staal signed 2 days before camp in 2010.
