Waddell doesn't have any wiggle room on Gaudreau, Z, Elvis, or Severson. All have NTC deals.

If he can get rid of Laine-even with some retention-he'll have some more room to do what he needs to do. Laine can't be part of a sound-thinking GMs long term plans and the pain of some retention is well worth getting this guy out of the picture.

I'm assuming-of course-that Laine will get out of the PAP soon. If he doesn't, just ride him out on LTIR and good riddance to him.

Elvis is a modified NTC, which, while not perfect should only be a 10 team restriction. However, he also indicated a change would be welcome so I don't think he would be the restriction to move... his play and contract likely hold those cards

Elvis can be moved in a retained salary trade or bought out. He's been dying for a change of scenery, he's not going to invoke his NTC to stop a trade.

I agree it's time for Laine to be moved.

The others can fit the lineup and I have no desire to move.

Laine 100% depends on him, his health, and what he wants his direction to be.

Elvis should be moved, but who takes the chance now?
Carolina WAS interested but they seem pretty set in the net now.
Not to mention there are UFAs of similar quality of elvis that will be out there. His worlds performance didnt really boost his value any.

That would be very nice for Columbus, but I doubt he is realistically attainable. He has a highly reasonable cap hit. The only reason the Panthers would have to want to move him, as far as I can see, is if they were really intent on signing Lundell long-term and replace Bennett with him. But I'd guess they'd rather just sign Lundell to a short-term deal and have Barkov-Bennett-Lundell as their top 3.
His cap hit is reasonable for 1 more season then he is UFA. If they plan on keeping Reinhart and Montour, plus extending Lundell, their cap space could disappear quickly. He could be attainable if they think they won't be able to re-sign him and prefer a trade to recoup assets vs. losing in free agency.

Even with 50% retention and a waive of the NTC, I don't see anyone picking him up.

His most recent performance (in the worlds) was dreadful. Coming on the heels of his performance and attitude of last season leaves me to think that he's an in-house reclamation project. Can't see anyone else willing to do it.

He'll either turn the corner this season or there's no other option than to buy him out. It'll be something on the order of $1.8 mil/year for 4 years so it's not a cap killer.

Elvis has three years left (so the buyout would be six).

Have a look at the UFA market for goalies - tandem goalies and high end backups who put up .900ish numbers. A bunch of them end up getting paid around $3m-$4m per like Jake Allen or Ville Husso. $2.7m x 3 for Elvis is comparatively not bad at all.

I'm assuming a buyout after this coming season. I gleaned from Waddell's comments that the team was going to do what they can to get him right but-in Waddell's words-"turn the page" at some point.

A team would have to be uber desperate to take a chance on Elivs, imo.

I looked at the Russian forwards HDGF% statistic. Very interesting. For example, Chinakhov had it better without Marchenko and Voronkov. Marchenko had better without Chinakhov. But Voronkov and Marchenko are better together. So Vincent did right The Russian line did not play together anymore.

Btw, there are players with 50 minutes and more.

The issue is that their goal results were stellar even when the advanced stats were not. I liked the way they played so I'm inclined to give them more runway to see if they can keep getting good results.

The fact is that Chinakhov played much better with Jenner and Gaudreau, last season with Roslovic and Laine.

Last year he did indeed score very well with Jenner and Gaudreau (around 3.0 P/60) and I have no problem with trying that again. But he scored 2.4-2.7 P/60 with Voronkov and Marchenko and that is also a fantastic number, and the Russians had a much lower goals against number. Those are all topline caliber scoring rates, so it doesn't corroborate the idea that there was a good reason to break up the Russian trio.

Chinakhov is turning into a high end forward so I don't think they can go too wrong, just don't saddle him with guys like Sillinger or Texier.

Assuming no Laine and no trades, I might start out the season with:

Gaudreau - Jenner - Chinakhov * decent success and line kind of makes sense with Chinakhov’s shot
Texier - Sillinger - Marchenko * seemed to have some chemistry at the end of the season
Johnson - Voronkov - Fantilli * ease KJ and Fantilli back, watch Voronkov’s stamina
Danforth - Kuraly - Olivier
Nylander

I think Ekblad will be traded before Bennett is. The latter is a big part of the team identity that the Panthers have.

Two thoughts:

1) I am not saying you are wrong but it's hard to think Nylander starts the season as a healthy scratch after the way he performed on the top line post-TDL. I know much will come down to how training camp pans out.

2) I like Vronk in the middle. I know some people suggest him being a big power forward on the wing but the times I saw him there last season he seemed less comfortable. I know there are concerns about his foot speed and endurance to be a two-way center in the NHL but he exceeded my expectations in his rookie year and want him to stay there.

the issue with just looking at HDGF% is that it's a low-frequency event so it's prone to producing outlier data.

in this instance, your conclusion (that chinakhov played better without marchenko and voronkov) is valid on the surface, but he still had close to a 60% HDGF% with marchenko, which is extremely good.

Honestly kind of pointless … Waddell said possibly 6 new faces in the lineup .. I’ll be shocked if one of those isn’t getting a legit center , so Fantilli can start the season out as #2 center and grow into #1 in time … to me, that would be getting someone to that can play with Gaudreaus pace . Waddell won’t go into next season status quo , with a lineup you posted that has finished at the bottom of the league past 2 seasons . You aren’t paying Gaudreau the money he’s making for 60 points … Who knows , could see Gaudreau and Laine both gone this summer as well… he made it seem the structure as well as the forwards would be where focus was ..

Doubt it'll be to us then, unless it's like 4th for Necas+ . Would be shocked to see Waddell trading major roster pieces on his 1st week. Even trading the 4th is a big stretch since there hasn't been much time for discussions with the scouts

My money is on Chicago

Why exactly ? If Waddell feels he can play center , which a lot of teams feel he can , but due to his lineup at Carolina he played wing .. we absolutely have the assets to land him if we want . Necas has a lot of qualities like Aho , he can carry the puck , is dynamic and very fast .. someone that could compliment Gaudreau which this team doesn’t have right now . Keep in mind possibly 6 new faces , said D was pretty set , they would be looking to change up front .. Also , a player like KJ would be possibly of interest , highly skilled , will be a cheaper contract

Necas is not the issue. I've said before that he seems like the best option on the market for us.

I just do not think CBJ is trade partner if it's happening this quickly, because Waddell has only been in the job for only 5 days.
  1. I feel it's unlikely that such a big trade would come together in a week. Waddell is only just going through the progress of getting to know his own staff, so I doubt he has casually progressed with Necas deal on the side with such pace.
  2. Waddell doesn't yet fully know the assets he is holding, which would probably make trading players away pretty uncomfortable. That's why a deal involving picks seems more likely to me.
I guess there's also the chance that there has been previous trade talks and pro scouting meetings, so Waddell has knows exactly what Canes want and think is a fair deal. That could fast track everything and make my points null

But we wouldn't have the cap space for Necas without moving players and having so many RFA to sign. Until anyone knows where Laine stands, that is 8.7 million in dead space we can't account for leaving only 23.4 million to sign 7 RFA AND Necas if he were gotten for only picks.

Something has to go back the other way.

You can always pull a Lou and hide the agreed rfa deals until everything else is sorted out
