If Aho were 6'3", well we wouldn't have him for one thing because he would have gone Top 5, but it's literally the only thing that makes him a less than ideal candidate to play center. I think the Hurricanes feel comfortable putting him there as soon as next season, and I see no reason why that wouldn't be a successful transition for him.

I don't think he looked out of place at all in the Worlds, playing center against NHL caliber opponents, and now he would have NHL caliber linemates too.

Zetterberg is not exactly big but he made seamless transition to the middle after few seasons as a LW. Aho would be fine, he just lacks experience as of now, his two-way game will continue to grow just because of the IQ. I'm fan of Eberle, he reminds me of Whitney. Still would love more than Eberle (Niederreiter, even Duchene, we need more).

Am I crazy for thinking that the defenseman I would most prefer to see moved, if one off the current roster has to, is Faulk? Maybe I'm putting too much stock into potential that Hanifin may never reach, but I'm really hesitant to see him go for anything less than a forward of equal age and potential. Of the names that are out there, the only one that really fits that bill is Drouin.

If the targets are players like Duchene, Eberle and Landeskog, who I feel have all already reached their ceilings, then I think either futures (prospects/draft picks) or Faulk should be the pieces heading back.

Again, maybe I am grossly overvaluing Hanifin and undervaluing Faulk.

Faulk is a valuable part of the d core, I wouldn't move him unless we get a replacement somewhere else. Now that he has support he can play a simpler game and it suits him well. If because of the draft we get another top 4, then I might agree. He would leave a big hole, and our strength at d isn't developed enough to fill that gap internally.

I think you're grossly undervaluing Faulk. There is no one on the roster that could step in and play his minutes on the back end while providing the offense he does. He scored 17 goals this year and only 4 were on the PP. I think he's an important part of the D core going forward. Vagrant talked about it earlier and I agree, Francis needs to keep the current top 4 together for as long as he can. If Faulk is the asking price for those three players, Francis is much better off staying the current course.

Certainly my preference would be to not have to touch the top-four. Even if it means a slight downgrade in the quality of the player coming back, I would still rather move Fleury, McKeown, draft picks, etc before subtracting from the current roster.

Hey guys not sure what you'd think of it but what about Wallmark+Pesce for RNH?

I know he's a former #1 and all, but nope. I wouldn't even do RNH for Pesce straight up at this point.

We'd be trading the guy with the best +/- on our team for the guy with the worst +/- on yours. I know it's an outlier stat to some degree, but still.

I think the Hurricanes feel comfortable putting him there as soon as next season, and I see no reason why that wouldn't be a successful transition for him. The comparisons to Igor Larionov look even better now than they did before he came into the league. He's just so ridiculously smart at such a young age. It's one of the reasons I think we may feel comfortable going into next season without feeling the need to overpay for Duchene.

And no offense intended to Skinner or Lindholm, but they're just not centers. It's painfully obvious in the case of Skinner. Less so with Lindholm, but Lindholm doesn't seem assertive enough.

Lindhom and Skinner were centers before they came to the Canes and the Canes assumed and tried them there (Lindholm more than Skinner). I remember more than a few fans on this very board saying both of them should be/ looked better at center so to say they just aren't centers is a bit of hindsight being 20-20. Aho, on the other hand was pretty much a winger, other than WJC, in Finland before coming to the Canes.

I do think aho can be a center for the reasons you stated, just not convinced yet, especially next year. Kid loves to prove us all wrong though so never say never, just wouldn't count on it.

counter: RNH for Fleury and a 2nd.

I might consider RNH for Fleury-Stempniak-Roy. Edmonton is at a point where they need NHL players, so any deal for RNH needs to include someone who will help next year. Would you guys do Hanifin straight up for RNH?

That is even worse than the Pesce offer. Simply put, we're not trading any of our NHL defensemen for RNH.

Which offer Hanifin straight up? What about Fleury-Stempniak-Roy? That's got to be close. It's not like Roy is a sure fire top 6 forward or Fleury is a top 4 dman. Stempniak's a older UFA next year so his value ain't much.

You guys need to consider RNH didn't get top PP time like in the past and faced much stronger competition all year. He wouldn't have that responsibility in Carolina and could really flourish with Staal taking the heavy work load. You center depth become Staal-RNH-Rask which is pretty damn good and you keep your top 4 dmen.

Hanifin. He's not going anywhere unless we're getting a bonafide top line forward in return. As for the other offer, it's alright, but I don't have much interest in trading Roy. RNH is a guy we'd only take if he came cheap, which he's not. I'd much rather attempt to swing a deal for Eberle as I imagine the cost would be more in our ballpark.

I dunno if Eberle is much cheaper given our lack of depth at RW. Any deal would be Stempniak with a substantial plus. Maybe Stempniak+Fleury would do it?

Re: Fleury and coming in not in game shape, iirc, he was injured in traverse city and it lasted through most of training camp(or was that 2 seasons ago?).

It was his first pro season and he made tremendous strides through out the season. I do agree he's more expendable than Slavin and Hanifin, but I'd take the risk that he'll be more valuable in a year or two, than take a lower offer now.

That was last season and that injury, when it happened looked ugly. In the end, he missed fewer games than I expected and suspect he rushed back to try and make an impression in camp.

He can, but imo was at his much better on LW. And while Francis and Peters have said they see Aho as a center at some point, they also were clear that they wouldn't do it until he was ready. People thought Skinner, years back and Lindholm not so many years back would be centers too. It's not a given, particularly next year.

I'm not THAT concerned about his handedness, bu combine that with his soft, non 2 way play and being a UFA in 1 year, and I would not give up what is being asked/proposed.

Aho was drafted as a RW. He played RW for Karpat until injuries forced him to play some pivot. He played center in the WJCs because, well that team was just stacked. Turns out he plays center very well too.

I actually don't recall him playing much RW at all while in a Canes sweater, but I'm sure he had a few games there. Frankly, I believe that he's the type of player that can play anywhere should he be tasked with it. In the end, I could see him manning the right side until he became comfortable in the middle at the NHL level.

I lean toward protecting Dumba myself and I'm still not all that convinced of the bolded. Let's assume it's true. What do you think Carolina is prepared to offer for Brodin assuming that Minnesota has already braced to lose him?

To me, and this is just one man's opinion, the only reason the Canes would be interested in Brodin is if they were losing a blueliner as part of a larger trade (such as for Niederreiter). He's be a replacement for Hanifin, if Hanny was one of the assets coming to the Wild in such a deal. Otherwise, I'd personally be more interested in Dumba. However, I'd be surprised if he wasn't protected.

Wallmark+Pesce for RNH? No.

Pesce for RNH? Still no.

RNH is not worth a young, expansion-exempt #2/3D, let alone adding anything on top of that.

I said this on the main trade board, but wanted to get ya'll's opinions.

I think many of us undervalue Ryan Nugent-Hopkins by a significant margin. He's a 24 year old, 55 point centerman who is responsible defensively. Production-wise he's a younger version of Marcus Johansson, no? I'd easily give up our 1st and a mid-to high-level prospect (McKeown or maybe even Saarela, guys like that).

I can't see us landing the true #1 center, so we'll likely roll a mix of "2nd lines" again this season. Adding him to our line-up gives us 3 true centermen. It would seem to me that those same 3 "2nd lines" would be a difficult match up for almost any team.

How flawed is this logic?

I'd give a 1st and prospect for RNH. I wouldn't give up any of our top 4 D for him though, which is what the Oilers fans are asking. The chances of our first becoming as good as RNH is slim at best. The problem is, he's a bit of "more of the same" of what we have, but he'd help.

Not sure he'd be my first choice, nor do I think he's a perfect fit, but the team would be better with him. Honestly though, I don't see the Oilers trading him. He's valuable enough to them that he makes them better also.
