Hopefully this means we move up in the draft.

Unfortunately, I think rather than picking up an EXTRA draft pick, it's going to be something like Grabner and a 3rd for a 2nd.

I say that feeling this draft is soooo good, that you have more from moving Grabner straight up for a 3rd than packaging him to move up.

This is exactly correct. Deepest draft is in years. Plus we're all biased, but objectively Grabner has no real value. You know how you can tell? Ask yourself this...

On a scale of 1-10, how sad would you be if we dealt Grabner?

Your answer to that is also the same answer of how excited any other GM would be to trade for him.

Unless we have a very specific player in mind, definitely take Grabner for a 3rd. It is almost guaranteed that a player the Isles have ranked 30-45 will be available in round 3. 2nd and 3rd rounds are very fluid. Just have to make the right choices.

if we can get a second for grabner, or a decent prospect, sure.....i dont know if i would trade him for a 3rd....i know he has had a disappointing last year or so, but wouldnt this be a classic example of trading low?

this isnt directed at your post obviously....just the whole situation....i know i am prob in the minority with this thought

And he has such a small margin of error for him it seems. Grabs started the playoffs, he had one bad game (as the whole team did) and never saw the ice again. It was as if he was waiting for him to screw up to pull him.

Last year was a washout for him. I understand that he's the likely guy to go and am OK with that. But, if it should come to pass that he sticks around, I'm OK with that too. He still can be a quality player - especially if he already had his surgery (I"ve never seen that confirmed, just talked about) and is COMPLETELY healthy come Sept/Oct.

I think him not seeing the ice again was because he had another hernia problem, as had another surgery right after we got knocked out.

Just don't see where he fits in with this team anymore. Of course there will be injuries, but we have 10 top 9 forwards other than Grabner, and we're likely adding Petrov to the mix. I'd rather have a 3rd than pay $5M for Grabs for one more year and use him sparingly.

a 3rd for tomorrow - definitely. A 3rd for 16'? Eh - that's about the tipping point for me as to whether we just hold on to him for insurance. Easy for me to say obviously as I'm not the one footing the $5m, but its not like we are going to be up against the cap this year so his $3m cap hit for us is mostly irrelevant. The cash layout is what is pushing any potential deal. That's a lot of money to swallow if he could otherwise be replaced with a minimum (or close to it) deal.

I find Grabner and 3-on-3 OT intriguing. Sure he is a poor finisher, but his speed would definitely alter other team's game plans.

Let's hope there are a few GM's out there that are just as intrigued.

Seriously. No one should build their teams around 3 on 3 OT. They should build it based on what it takes to win playoff hockey.

Agreed, Higher value is always better.

Agreed. But no one would acquire Grabner EXCLUSIVELY for 3-on-3 OT. Just like no one would want Frans Nielsen for JUST the shoot out. Grabner is a great penalty killer and reclamation project as an overall scorer. Effectiveness in less man situations (4-on-4 or 3-on-3) is a just a bonus.

Regardless of where he ends up (I do believe he will be moved) I still can't wait to see what he does 3-on-3. Just to be clear, I prefer 5-on-5 OT followed by ties.

Not moving Hamonic for that. I don't want to move him for anything really.

I'd do Hamilton for Hamonic straight up (Boston wouldn't). I wouldn't do Hamonic/Okposo for Hamilton. That's way overpaying. Boston receives a solid #3 signed at a team-friendly deal and a legitimate 1st line winger that they have a year to resign to a long-term deal.

I don't think you guys realize how freaking good Dougie Hamilton is...

I know that Leaf fans don't want to hear it, but I do. Would LOVE that guy on my team.

He's already so good and he just turned 22 last week. Honestly, if Boston only gets the #3 for him, that's not good enough, and I really like Hanifin/Strome/Marner.

EDIT: And as I wrote this, it appears he was traded to Calgary

Something added to Brodin (very underrated player) is my guess.

EDIT: Ooops... I meant Brodie. Brodin is great too.
