King being a free agent July 1st 2017, I doubt it, I do agree about McNabb, possibly even Gravel (will have completed his 2nd pro season, meaning he would need to be protected), depending on how his year goes.

Unless someone has a massive good year on defense. They will protect Doughty, Muzzin and Martinez. Everyone else will be open to take.

We know the four locks at forward are...Kopitar, Carter, Toffoli, Pearson.

The big thing comes down to protect one more dman or 3 forwards.

Lets not forget they will have to protect Mersch and Kempe as well, no matter where they play.

I agree that Gravel/Mcnabb are likely exposures, but barring one having a massive year (which would be a good problem--then we could even parlay a 2-for-1 deal potentially), think of what teams around the league are going to have the same issue WORSE than us, i.e. there are most certainly at least 7-8 better #4 d-men than those pair at this point.

Only Mersch will be eligible. Kempe is only in his first year so he's covered.
That "2-year pro" rule seems quite unclear. Does his time in Sweden count? That's pro hockey. Does his time in Manchester last season count? That's pro hockey. By some measures, he will be more than a second-year pro. I haven't seen a clear answer to that anywhere from anyone that has reported on the expansion draft.

From what I read it is NHL, KHL and AHL time that counts (no SHL or other European leagues). Kempe played on a PTO/ATO so he technically wasn't on a contract with the Kings in the AHL playoffs last year. So he should be exempt from the draft.

So its 2 years and under that don't have to be protected? I assumed once they completed the 2nd year (which Kempe will have done this time next year, not including the PTO) in North America they would have to be protected.

If Gravel breaks out, about the best way to protect him would be to sign him to a contract that takes him right to UFA and make the lack of control a team has, be a deterrent.

Yes; but at the time of the draft he won't have started his 3rd season, so still in the clear.

Depending on how the UFAs go the Kings will have...

UFAs: Enroth, McBain, Schenn, Scuderi, King, Lewis, Lucic, Versteeg

Locks: Quick, Doughty, Kopitar, Carter, Toffoli, Muzzin, Pearson

Open for the draft: Budaj, Greene, Brown, Andreoff, Nolan, Clifford

Prospects exposed: Bartosak, Auger, Crescenzi, Ebert, Loverde, Kitsyn, Moller

(All open for the draft but ?): Martinez, McNabb, Gaborik, Shore, Mersch, Dowd, Gravel, Forbort

You have either two open spots to protect 8 guys or 1 Dman spot and 3 forward spots.

My Choice...

G: Quick

D: Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez

F: Kopitar, Carter, Toffoli, Pearson, Mersch, Dowd, Shore (depending on one of the UFAs resigning)

And try and sign all the UFAs to 1-year deals so they don't have to be exposed!

I gave up trying to decipher the expansion draft for now. Different sources have different info so far. It's almost safer to assume everyone is game at this point except the core obvious protects.

Pretty much... then there's the question on what their first year pro is? How many games is that? Coming in and playing in the AHL playoffs after a season in minors, does that count?

Then Lombardi may make some moves this summer. Unless you think the personnel are capable of playing Sutter's "Quick" style.

I have questions about Sutter's "Quick" style he's bringing out next year. There's no doubt a tortoise looks fast to a slug. Just how "fast" is Sutter talking about? :squint: are we talking tectonic plates or 3 toed sloth fast?

Just posted on the devil's board for some feedback..Not even sure I would be ok with the deal (especially with the expansion draft coming), but wanted to get the devil's fans opinion on Toffoli for Larsson. To no surprise all said no, but some thought value was fair.

Toffoli is much more valuable as a King imho. Larson is not a huge upgrade. Kings still have to score goals.

i am not sure I would do it..But Larsson would fill a need (although it creates another hole), and is locked into a great contract. For usto re-sign Toffoli we need some luck during expansion

Exactly. @ 3.25 Toffoli is a great value. When he needs to be re-signed around 6M does he fit into the cap structure? Next year doesn't matter. It's looking forward at the new contract.

Personally, young snipers who can be put in a sheltered position on Carter's wing are some of the easier positions to fill with entry level contracts. Maybe they don't have the impact Toffoli did, but an extra 4-5M to spend on say D would come in really handy.

Time to trade Toffoli is now, RFA, 30 goal season, before he gets his huge payday. With the team not looking at a cup next year there's no reason to keep him, unless there's going to be space made available for his cap hit in the future.

I'd keep him over Brown/Gaborik, but how are those contracts being unloaded?

I can see Gaborik still having some value and being unloaded.

I am very split on Toffoli and only move him for a signed stud (no Trouba no Barrie). However I would also be just fine to head into next season with a kings club constructed with it's current NHL players and holes filled with AHL call ups. if LA cannot re-sign TT next offseason he will still hold value.

To me if we are going to move Toffoli it should be for a package deal, not 1-1 unless its someone huge value wise of course

Why are you guys setting your sights so low? Think about the return if they packaged Kopitar and Doughty together, and that sweet, sweet cap space that the team will have.

If they're not looking at a Cup next year, it's time to trade a young forward that led the team in goals? I'd rather keep Toffoli, let Lucic walk, and get rid of whoever is the easiest to deal between bad contract Brown, and only getting a year older every year Gaborik.

Or why didn't we trade Kopitar after his second season when he first potted 30+ goals? Why not according to some here! He would have been cost controlled, RFA, and would have got the team a #3 defenseman for sure!

Didn't you know?
