So the Kings end up losing the 21st overall pick to Carolina for a handful of games from Sekera in a forgettable 2014-15 season.

That may be Dean's worst transaction as Kings GM, that pick should've been a conditional based on Sekera re-signing.

hard to forecast the player getting injured. I agree I would have liked some sort of # of games played or re-signing condition. At least we had the playoff condition

Dallas had that condition with the Russell trade. If they made the WCF it would be a first, if not then it's a second.

true..at the top of his game is driving to the net..not sitting in front of it.
Penner was better infront as well

Yup. Brown has never been Ryan Smyth, yet year in and year out I hear, "Get in front. Clean up the garbage like you used to." He didn't "used to." His game was predicated on bullying his way into scoring areas with the puck, not without. Look at the goals he scored in 2012. He is skating and taking the puck into high percentage areas with purpose and confidence. He didn't fall. He didn't fumble the puck. He didn't shy away from taking into the gauntlet. Now, as soon as he has the puck and is skating, you can almost see him overthinking it. You know what's coming because it happens 80% of the time he has the puck... a turnover forced by his own brain.

But Chicago was also after him. When that trade was made, did anyone here think the Kings would be able to lose to Edmonton, in a must win game, in the last week of the season? Agree with the trade or not, but most if not all of us were still buying the flick the switch theory. At least a little bit.

I can't fault a GM going for it with a team trying to defend a championship. The Kings weren't the worst team in the league, and weren't in any worse of a position in the standings than they were in 2012. That Sekera got hurt, and the team couldn't win a game against the Oilers, with or without Sekera, nobody saw that coming.

Missing the playoffs in '15 was a definite outlier of a season. 95 points still should of been enough to make the playoffs but nothing broke the Kings way.

If Sekera is healthy, do they get the two points needed? Probably. McNabb was a true disaster once he was put back in the lineup for Sekera.

Even though they had issues with Vancouver in the regular season, I think they would of stomped them in Round 1. This SJ team that stomped the Kings is clearly worlds better than that Canucks team from last season.

Good chance that Pearson would have been back as well plus Gaborik was having/had a great season.

Long story short: I was for the trade when it happened and I'm not going to Monday Morning QB it too much. Knew the risk was there and was surprised they wound up missing the playoffs.

I think that the trade stings more now as we sit here after a 1st round exit plus the fact that the 2015 1st was used for Lucic who was a key contributor to said 1st round exit.

I don't think he over thinks it..I just think he is not as strong on the puck so defenders are able to knock the puck away easier. Seems either that happens or he falls down trying to get himself going.

Sure, and it's completely understandable. It's the eternal struggle between doing something, and hindsight. If they don't win in 2012 or 2014, and everything else goes the same way, Simmonds and Schenn for Richards is an unmitigated disaster. We can talk about how dumb Schenn is, well, the other Schenn being dumb, but 26 goals and 59 points, is 26 goals and 59 points.

It may not have been a conscious thing, but Lombardi giving up the 2015 1st for Lucic is so that the 2016 1st given up for Sekera doesn't completely come back to bite him. In some ways he's saying we have to make the playoffs in 15-16, because we can't give up a top 10, top 5, or top 3 pick if the Canes win the lottery.

What's with all this complaining about draft picks. Kings will have plenty of picks when they move Muzzin & Toffoli. :naughty:

I'm kidding... Really... No way Lombardi goes that crazy this summer. No way... :)

I see this team being at the exact same place it was last year at that point without the 1st round selection.

The needs:
- top 4 puck moving defensman to replace Voynov
- skilled forward that can help the PP and score (did like Versteeg there)
- a PK forward that takes the pressure off the top6 pk guys (Shore might be decent there)
- young blood in the bottom 6
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Coaching:
It wouldn't hurt for the Kings coaching staff to look at the games being played - quick passes out of defensive zone are something the Kings are missing big time. Dump-and-chase shouldn't be the only option the team relies on. That low risk hockey with garbage shoots was boring, annoying and ineffective...
"Learning how to shoot the puck" tutorial would be nice too.

Pearson was probably the Kings' best forward during the playoffs, he really did show signs of a younger Williams like many of us around here have compared him to, and I hope he continues with that trajectory.

He has all the tools to be a regular top six forward in this lineup and that is where he should be next season. I know he had his bouts with consistency, but he responded as a player should when he was made a healthy scratch, by playing better and proving that he belongs in the lineup.

I personally think the leg injury was still having an effect on him for awhile both mentally and physically so it was a big relief to see him become one of, if not the best forward down the stretch and in the playoffs

The thing is, he's getting basically the same chances around the net and in front and they just aren't going in. I went back and looked at some of my old archive videos of him scoring goals over the past 5 years and all those chances were going in. Tips on the pp, shots from inside the circle and getting garbage goals all went in. Now , it's like some sort of force field is preventing the same goals for going in. I just have no answer as to why.

He cost Kopitar more points than any top line winger ever should when he played at the top. Kopitar was a wizard and even made King look like a boss. Check the year in goal highlights of Brown. Stick on the ice and bank in stuff.

"Learning how to shoot the puck" One would think that would be a mandatory workshop. The downside is if guys like Lewis learned to shoot the puck they'd price themselves off the team.

One thing is different. Lombardi is in a different place. He isn't in, all in mode, at this time. It sounds like a development year. What ever his plan is for the D, it spooked Sutter enough, that his first reaction about coaching next year was, "we'll have to see what the D looks like."

Oh yeah... If the expansion happens a top 4D will probably be a need after the year as well.

Unless they go 8 skaters + Quick, which would be tough to see if Lucic re-signs, they may be better off to wait until post expansion next summer to get that top 4 defenseman. No sense in doing it twice.

I'm guessing the hope at that point is LaDue or Cernak fill the role.

The most likely persons to get taken in the expansion draft would be...McNabb, King and Clifford

King being a free agent July 1st 2017, I doubt it, I do agree about McNabb, possibly even Gravel (will have completed his 2nd pro season, meaning he would need to be protected), depending on how his year goes.
