So it's not notable to you that Kreider trained with Buch all summer. From what we've read about Kreider, he's a glue guy in the room and that has to count for something.

No. I was talking about the mythical fact that he speaks fluent Russian and thus is attractive to all potential Russians who might come to the NHL.

Sure, he's a fine leader, but as we've shown time and time again, that is no reason to keep a player. I think the legend of Messier has fried so many people's brains around here when it comes to valuing leadership qualities.

that **** is at urban legend status

pretty sure buch had an interview where he said kreider’s russian isn’t even that good
The whole "we have a Russian so we'll get other Russians" or "we have a Russian so we should get other Russians" is an urban legend as old as hockey itself.

The fact that we use an American is just us changing it up.

If you're just against rebuilding for whatever reason, that's your thing. Fine.

If you seriously think there's a path for this team to win soon, I disagree, but whatever.

But Brooks sits there and admits that a core where Kevin Hayes is one of your best isn't a winning core, and then tells me we should commit dollars and term to that core that he admits isn't winning anything.

Where does he think the more talented players come from? The Tooth Fairy?

Yep, it's almost like building a stanley cup contention hockey team is very hard.

It all depends on the money and where Hayes realistically slots in when the team is a contender again. Probably a 3rd line center and relegated to the role Nazem Kadri now has on the Leafs. Is he worth 7M+ x 7 in that role? Probably not. Is he worth that role making 4.5-5M like Kadri, perhaps.

Two things resonate loud regarding the Hayes departure for me.

1) Rangers got assets, and that is what is needed for successful rebuilds.
2) His buddies, Skjei and Vesey have stepped up while he was out of the lineup prior to the trade.

For the latter, these three were really tight. They are in all sorts of clips together hanging around. Once Hayes was pulled both have totally stepped up their game. Skjei has 3 goals. Vesey is playing his best hockey in a while. Not sure what to attribute for it, but so far those were the results.

Moreover, it's not even just that Hayes can't be a major player in a contender, it's that when this team would be contending, he would be possibly declining.

Time is an issue even more so than talent.

Okay, @Machinehead has convinced me that trading for WN makes no sense, so I'm off that kick.
Yeah, makes no sense whatsoever. Went 8th in 2014 draft.

We didn't have a 1st (what else was new) picked 59th Halverson.
Point (79th), Arvidssen (112th) the only substantial picks thus far that we could have had. (No swings, no misses......so yeah, wait 58 picks and then choose a goalie. Ugggh. My pet peeve though......

Point is (no pun here), even this year we might not get to pick 8th? When do WE ever get to draft a player of Nylander's quality? If we were 8th pick, would we have? Doubt it. This is nearly the only way.

Gorton, like many of us ( well I did ) didn't want to commit to Hayes because of Andersson and the hope that Chytil could fill the 2C role. Andersson should be given a long look but we don't have top6 forwards at the moment lol.

I'd add Howden to that mix as well.

Yeah... completely disagree.

They didn't want to commit to Hayes because of the cost. If they felt that Hayes ask was reasonable, Hayes would still be here. They would figure Andersson and Chytil out later.

TSN does the Senators games. I was watching their game on Friday night against Chicago. Duthie and Dreger were on during the intermissions. Dreger said some teams view Hayes as a third line center.

Hayes would have been signed to a reasonable deal in the past off-season. Gorton didn't want to commit. Then Hayes had a much better than expected season and the price got astronomical

Yea I recall something similar. I'm pretty sure he's not fluent.
Yeah, I don't believe you can be actually FLUENT in any language unless you actually lived there and had to get around in every day life speaking said language; but he may be fluent, who knows?

Last year's deadline and so far this year's deadline will make you numb to moves the team makes for players who have been here for a long time. You don't want to say a trade would devastate you, but a move like this would blindside a fanbase.

This is as close as it would get to "if Brian Leetch can get traded" as it gets.
