So now that the dust is settled how did we do with our trades compared to other teams?
With the assets we gave up, could we have done better? Now that we see where other players went, for how much and factoring the cap space we used.
JBB did very well. Prices were pretty high this deadline, and Tampa had a clear need to add at least one top 6 RW and one middle/bottom 6 F. JBB added both, and likely got the best top 6 RW that had term and was realistically available (an argument could be made for Rakell, but Bjorkstrand is younger, more consistent, injured less, and a better 2 way player). Gourde wasn't necessarily the other F I thought he'd bring in, but given the familiarity with the organization and the system, it wasn't a surprise.
I think a player like Zetterlund could've been an option, but JBB perhaps didn't want to jettison any of the top 4 or 5 prospects that are close to ready or have a lot of potential (Geekie, Duke, Howard, Gauthier and probably Finley).
A couple months ago, adding a depth dman seemed a bit more important, but Tampa's defense is much improved l, amd now with the return of Moser, even stronger. They also have depth options in Syracuse if needed (Pouliot, Crozier, Carlile etc). Last night's game not withstanding, the defense has looked quite good in the last month or so.
So even though they didn't add a 4th liner with size or an additional #6/7 dman. I believe JBB addressed the most pressing needs of the team. They are definitely better than they were 3 days ago, and perhaps it will be enough to being another Cup to Tampa this season. The team is also very well set up for next season, with most major players under contract and with not only the potential of 1 or 2 impact prospects making the team, but with enough cap this summer to add one impact ufa, either a middle 6 F or a 2nd pairing caliber dman.
