Official New Year Training Camp thread

I feel like we've been fishing for a Hyman 2.0 in Vesey and Joey Anderson. Hopefully one works out.

don't think he's a hyman. much more of a skill guy and much less of an all-out effort guy.

i'd look at him more like a poor man's JVR. potentially. if he works out.

No reason a guy who's scored 16, 17, 17 goals can't see a slight bump to 20 playing with a guy like Tavares, who has shown the ability to elevate wingers.

Vesey is being paid based on his Buffalo tenure, but it's the body of work with NYR that is encouraging.

what's really intriguing about those NYR numbers is that he did that with very little PP time and production. it's mostly all even strength goals and points.

Tavares should be well acquainted with playing with Jimmy Vesey-esque type players since he was doing it over his full career in NYI. Curious to see how much money he can make Jimmy next off-season.

Can't wait till the 13th, f*** the toilet seats GLG.

It's a laugh and a half. Seriously it's all making fun of our lineup, not realizing that their lineup is a bunch of 40 point players.
just always remind them that their " biggest acquisition" this off season had the same amount points that martin Marincin last season. :sarcasm:

Good. There are situations where he can take advantage of a team. If Kapanen got chances to score Matthews will too, but he’ll score some.

PPs have to be aware when Marchand is on the ice, hopefully Matthews is that kind of threat.

With his god given physical abilities there’s no reason Willy couldnt do this either.

Good, he's fantastic on the draws, and very strong defensively.

Will also satiate the dummies on the main board who believe that if you don’t PK, you aren't good defensively. As if the 2 have any direct correlation.
I feel like Matthews goal totals drown out how good he was defensively as well.

For example trying to explain to people how much better defensively Matthews is than Draisaitl is extremely difficult to get through.

Man oh man it happens every year. I'm reading all the super positive stuff from the writers, watching clips of soft but highly skillful practice goals, my imagination running wild with the giddiness of the new seasons honeymoon and the hope that after 53 years they'll finally push it over the finish line.

I don't want to feel this way but I do

Joe doesn't need to do a whole lot with Matty and Mitchell, just get the puck to either one of them and we all know Jumbo is an all world set up guy.

I initially thought that Vesey would slide onto Kerfoots LW due to some playing time together at Harvard, but I don't mind Keefe trying him out with JT and Nylander. Vesey has real good speed and will be really compliment Willie Ny, he possess' the ability to retrieve pucks and importantly knows where his own end is. He may be a more gifted version of Buster given the right motivation.

Looking at the proposed 3rd line of Soup - Kerfoot and Buster gets my blood flowing. All three have excellent speed, great offensive instincts and play an NHL top level 2 way game, if this line stays intact I don't know if there's a better 3rd line in the league, how do you defend them after trying to stop lines 1 and 2

Simmonds - Spezza - Barabanov/Robertson/Anderson Not sure about Barabanov nor Anderson but any of those 3 guys should be fine with Spezz and Simmer, all they need to do is gain and maintain possession and chip in now and again.

The D is how this team will ultimately succeed, the addition of true #2 in Brodie has done so much to upgrade the skill level of the entire group that the 3rd pair will consist of 2 guys who could challenge for 2nd pairing time on at least a dozen other teams. The second pair anchored by Muzz will be formidable whether he pairs with Holl, Dermott, Lehtonen or Sandin there isn't a noticeable drop off talent wise with any of those partners. Again not to get too excited and not to be too premature, but this defense may be the deepest they've iced since the mid 70's group led by Salming and Turnbull and possibly the best since the early 90's pairings, when the Leafs were among the best defensive teams league wide. However unlike the early 90's teams this team will be among the league leaders in offence.

argghhh I didn't want to say all that

Great to hear this. I've also been reading about the work Marner did in the off-season and I'm so excited for these two. So excited we're only 6 days away.

I hope Marner sticks on the PK, but we'll have to see. There have been a lot of additions to lineup and some might be able to take it over him. He pressures a lot, has speed, and threat offensively which is all excellent for PK.

Very random though I had about the reverse retro jerseys. Not sure if they were meant to be worn by both teams during the same game or not. I was thinking not with a 22/9 colour to white split (unless the Sharks could be in the white category, it becomes 21/10). It seemed like we were ripe for a matchup with Detroit or Buffalo. Now the only possibility in colour/white case would be Edmonton. With that, I imagine it won't be both teams wearing them, but maybe that was already the case anyway?

Some hilarious takes on the Habs board about it atm. Guy comments and says his blocked shots will stay at zero. What must be heart breaking for him to hear is that matthews had 30 THIRTY!! More blocked shots than any forward on Montreal last year, and never played the pk. He’s exceptional at it.

If he plays as well this year as last, there won’t be any doubt in anyone’s mind how dominant he is at both ends of the ice. When he’s on, it’s like a bear stealing the puck from you. Excited for this season and some hockey to be back on

That's what being a fan is all about. The ability to get excited every year, or at least all the years not specifically tied to a rebuild. I get that after all these years, certain fans can't, and if that's the case, maybe time for a new hobby. It's the new changes and the excitement of a new challenge/journey that makes being a fan wonderful. I feel for the fans who can't feel that year after year, even with the letdowns.

Well said!

Hopefully Matthew's takes marners spot on the pk, marner was not good at it.

Furthermore. The whole Nylander vs marner on Matthew's line debate. The more I think about it the more I prefer marner with Matthew's. Marner seems almost lazy and disinterested at times playing with Tavares.
With Matthew's and marner being the top 2 players on the team and of similar age, its like they almost push each other to do better and feed off of it, they become more competitive.

Yes, adding another playmaker seems a bit weird but marner did just have 26 goals 2 years ago. Marner might have to score a bit more but its not like he can't do it. Overall I think I prefer Matthew's with marner.
And Nylander with Tavares. Nylander proved last year it didn't matter who he plays with and is going to perform regardless.

Honestly makes more sense than Marner on the PK. Have a center take the draw and he was much better defensively 5 on 5 than Marner last year.

If it starts taking away from his offensive game take him off of it, but it's worth a shot.
Matthews is also a 90% better option to score over Marner so that should put the other team on edge if they make a mistake.
