I actually screwed that up. Josh Anderson had 4 points last year. Can't go selling him 25% short.

Didn’t we just lose a series to a team like that?

We’re the best Canadian team on paper. Let’s hope we want to work hard and do the dirty work to earn it this year.

I was thinking the same thing. I said it before last season started and I'll say it again now - I don't care much what they do during the regular season, I will judge this team by how they perform in the playoffs. Last season by that standard was an abject failure, let's hope we do better this time around.

Nah, we lost to a goalie who put up 2 shutouts and posted a .958 save percentage when his career average is .908

We lost to a team, not a goalie. Their goalies IMHO were good, but not as good as the numbers would suggest. We had an edge in play but not that much of an edge and our performance in the last deciding game was subpar. For a team as stacked with talent as ours, this was a failure plain and simple.

The motto for this season should be this - no more excuses, just win!

To be fair its not really the loss that hurts - Markstrom was not likely to repeat that career year anyways.

But why they wasted that money on Holtby I do not know.

Either way, it looks like a pretty big regression in goal for the Canucks this year. Even if you want to be optimistic because Holtby won the cup a couple of years ago, gotta remember he actually lost the starting job that year as well and then had that amazing playoff run out of nowhere.

I guess we're gonna find out soon. :yo:

Columbus goaltending was insane.

Combined play-ins and 1st round numbers:

Top team save% (out of 24 teams)

1. Columbus: 93.92

....and they did that while facing the 5th most shots/60 and 3rd most scoring chances against/60.........all while facing two of the best finishing teams in the league in Toronto and Tampa!

Legendary goaltending performance.

Tampa got the job done largely because Vasy was elite in their series as well. (not quite god mode like Korpi but still elite)

I just hope the team doesn't think like many posters on this forum. They can't get better until they learn hard lessons. They can't learn those lessons unless they admit failure. They can't admit failure with a load of excuses.

I like the look of the team, but if the top guys don't compete, it doesn't matter.

Like I said, IMHO not nearly as good as the numbers suggest. We had an edge in play, not that big an edge though. Most of our shots weren't dangerous and we pissed away a lot of our high danger chances on our own, nothing to do with their goalies. Remember Tavares missing the empty net? We did an unacceptably poor job of converting on our chances and not all of that was due to their goalies.

Anyhow, that's just based on my eye test so feel to dismiss it and go rely on the numbers but IMHO that Tavares miss is a perfect example though of numbers not telling the whole story. That was a high danger chance, one of our best chances in the entire series come to think of it and we couldn't even put the puck on the (empty) net. Gotta do better than that, that's all there is to it.

Oh, Tavares is going to see that empty net in his dreams for sure but there was never any indication Columbus' goaltending was going to be that good or that their D was going to be that bad. That whats so crazy about it. Not only was their save% much improved from the regular season but it was against so much more firepower, I'm not really sure how to explain it and no one predicted Columbus would be carried by goaltending because of thier porous D. You might as well have told me their offensive firepower was going to be the difference.

An outlier for sure though.

No one on this team should be taking a night off. Its been one of their biggest faults... they don't compete every night on a consistent basis.

They'd be a top 5 team with a high compete level. Hopefully with the vets brought in and the growth of the young guys.... itll all click this year.

yeah, there's a real chance here that while he's unable to be a catalyst on a scoring line in the NHL, he may thrive as a pure complementary piece on a scoring line.

I'm not hoping too hard on this one but I like having him as one of our many options for those lines.

I feel like we've been fishing for a Hyman 2.0 in Vesey and Joey Anderson. Hopefully one works out.

No reason a guy who's scored 16, 17, 17 goals can't see a slight bump to 20 playing with a guy like Tavares, who has shown the ability to elevate wingers.

Vesey is being paid based on his Buffalo tenure, but it's the body of work with NYR that is encouraging.
