Not that surprised that Dermott is potentially starting as the #7. Booth Boogisan and Lehronen had options and choose the Leafs. Not to mention have thought sone folks have undervalued Lehtonen since he signed over the summer.

Hopefully Dermott uses this as motivation to force his way into the top six permanently

Yup, he certainly seems to be on the outside looking in (which shows how much we've improved here). But playing on the right will allow him to slot in for Bogo when the time comes.

I am a huge fan of what Holl did last year, and think that Muzzin-Holl pairing was nothing less than awesome.

That being said, if Lehtonen can look anywhere near as good in the NHL as he does in the KHL, then that's a guy we want getting big minutes, so I'd have no problem bouncing Holl down to the bottom pair - IF Lehtonen earns it.

Though tbh, I'd almost be more inclined to put Lehtonen with Rielly, and put Brodie with Muzzin to give us one very reliable match-up defensive pair (that also has nice mobility and puckskills too).
As long as Holl ain't carrying the puck into the ozone, he will keep out of trouble. He has zero hockey IQ offensively

Kind of sad to see that Liljegren does not seem to even be considered for the roster. I think he's good enough for bottom pairing easily right now. Hopefully next year full-time after the expansion draft.

It more seems like we have more RD than LD at this point. If the plan is to have Dermott at RD, which really it should be if we have any kind of plans of keeping him, then we have 4 guys who should reasonably be ahead of Liljegren for right now (Holl, Brodie, Bogosian, and Dermott). However since there is a good chance two of those guys could not even be here next year, then it opens up a lot more for guys like Liljegren.

Sandin doesn't really have that roadblock. Marincin is a good #7, but hardly the type of guy who is going to block Sandin from the main group. If Dermott was playing LD instead of RD, we likely see Liljegren's name on there instead of Sandin's.

I honestly kinda wish we just didn't go after players like Bogosian (I hate his game physicality aside) and Marincin every year that don't really do anything valuable. They only serve to clutter the bottom part of the defensive line-up and block higher upside options.

Honestly I think where Mikko is slotted is perfect at the moment. Bottom pairing w/ PP2 minutes. I think he is going to be a very good NHL defenseman at some point this season, I just think it might take him a little longer to get adjusted to the defensive side of the game on a smaller sheet of ice. He will get plenty of space on the PP to showcase his offensive side which I am really excited about. He has a canon of a clapper, but he more importantly has a great ability to get pucks through crowds with that snapper from the point. I have looked through as many clips on youtube as are available, and that is the thing that most stuck out to me. Similar to what Cody Franson did 5+ years ago. Knowing when to put that shot on net from the point is something few defensemen have. A well placed wrister will always be more effective then an erratic and more time consuming clapper. Its something Barrie struggled with all year with last year. When a D-man takes a shot on the PP, it needs to be on net more times then not. If it does not hit the net, there is a 50/50 chance that puck is turned over. Forcing the PP to regroup/waste precious time. Having Lehtonen's ability to get pucks through with Simmonds net front presence will be a good fit. I expect a bunch of garbage chances for Wayne and/or goalies being beat clean through the screen.

which is fine by me. Having Sandin and Lilly get more AHL time doesn't hurt. Both are babies still.

I guess it'll be that much nicer when they're the bottom pairing together next year and we no longer have bums like Bogosian and Marincin cluttering the depth chart up.

and having a 21 & 22yr old bottom pairing next year is still a super, super young pairing!

I really hate the idea of Matthews/Marner getting ~55% of our already low PP time with these balanced units. Really hope that doesn't last long.

Last year the Oilers PP was historically good and their second unit barely saw the ice.

If matthews can stay on for both PP units then we are good. Marner was very frustrating on the PP. Matthews is the real threat for us.

I'm excited to see what the new guys can do on the PP but can't help but think, "haven't we tried this before?" Don't love splitting up the powerplay and don't love the makeup of the first unit. Assuming Simmonds is in front of the net, who's in the bumper who can shoot? Marner has an okay shot, but his playmaking feels wasted in that spot. I would swap Marner and Nylander.

Not to mention, our PP was far from the problem last year.

nice to see some depth on the back end, fighting for jobs on D
