Robertson was the best LW in the league this season. Crazy to think about

Either we pay the man or we are going to get an insane haul for him. I think if we trade him it'll be a crazy return

I guess the interesting question is whether he has an idea in his head of which teams he'd sign an extension with.

I just can’t believe it’s gone on this long. I’m trying to pretend like there isn’t a chance they end up moving him and the return is subpar because of how much he’ll command and that limits his suitors/landing spots. I feel like when these things drag the return usually gets worse, not better. We’ll see how it plays out.

The draft is the real pressure point. No reason for anyone to blink until then.

Teams can make trades at any time. As it stays unresolved, dallas is in limbo. There are only so many opportunities that unfold in an offseason and you don’t want to miss a golden one because you still have unfinished business to attend to.
But obviously I have no idea whats going on behind the scenes. It’s just a possibility.

For what it's worth you have to keep in mind that each offer and counter offer they need to recalculate all their future contracts and what plans they need to make with what players which I imagine takes a day or 2 each time. On top of that contract review and writing takes time as well. The "leaks" that have existed have not really been strong one way or the other with kaplan putting it into writing where as marek is just mouthpiecing to podcasters.

This is quite the revelation if true.

Who knows. Seems made up but also would've possibly created another Necas situation for the Canes but with Robertson.

I like how he mentions it as if they preferred Stankoven over Robertson. No, they wanted the draft pick haul + Stankoven lol.

If this is in fact true though, I have a hard time seeing us extend Robertson. It really feels like Nill & co don't want to give a huge deal to Robertson

I recall Nill saying after the Rantanen trade that Carolina immediately demanding Stankoven as a non negotiable.

Hard to believe anything else was entertained.

I genuinely think Nill would have tried Bourque ++ then settled on Stank and this Robertson rumour is nothing

It sounds like it's made up like they could have tried to get Robo but they wanted Stank first and foremost period, which makes it both true but also a non-truth in that they never asked for robo in the first place. It wouldn't make much sense either because at the time our LW was robo and benn and that's about it. Why would we trade and make our left side even more weak? Another podcast giving half truths that make no sense just for soundbites.

I gotta think he's gone at this point. Harley's deal kinda sealed his fate unless he was taking well below market (which is still a small possibility)

Let's get the return Carolina got for Rantanen - a decent LW (stankoven esque) and 4 picks and $10m in cap space. Anything below that and it's gotta be seen as a massive failure (or if Harley never gets back to his 2023/24 form - which has to be of at least some concern right now)

Depends what his hold put price is.

If it's 14m+ then yeh sure trade him.

But if a deal can be done between 12.5 to 13m. Then sign him and trade away the pieces needed to make the cap work (Lybushkin, steel etc)

It's funny, even though I think yesterday's rumour was silly (Carolina not wanting him)..Hopefully that puts a reality check on his price that teams don't want to pay him that much.

There's tons of teams with cap to burn. Robertson could get Kaprizov money on the open market rather easy.

Yes 12-13 sign him and be done with it.

Anymore and you have to trade him and hope the FO doesn't f*** it up too bad

What would we want a Robo return package to be centred around?

Picks? Prospects? Young NHL Ready Talent?
The team's window to compete is now. You have to take advantage of what Rantanen, Miro, and Hintz can deliver before age or injury take it away.

But it doesn't mean Nill has to get immediate roster help now. That may not be doable depending on which team wants Robertson the most. It might work out best to get the magic beans and then flip them later for the help the roster needs.

I recognize none of this is happening:

I can’t cosign the idea of moving Robertson to get past this cap pinch when next season they’ll be home free. It also leaves Dallas with its two biggest question mark contracts.

Trade Harley + Bourque to acquire a Knies+ or a Marchenko+ and sign one of Raddysh/Andersson.

Trade Oettinger and roll the dice on goaltending to free up cap.

You also have Faksa, Myers, Lyubushkin, Steel with a combined 9 million in cap that would be relatively painless to move as needed.

Generic depth chart, ignore lines/placement:

Robertson - Johnston - Rantanen
Knies/Marchenko - Hintz - Seguin
Duchene - Hryckowian- X
Blackwell - Back - x

Heiskanen - Raddysh/Andersson
Lindell - Lundkvist
X - Bischel

X
DeSmith

You get to keep Robertson, gain much needed depth on offense, and acquire a better fit on defense. Presumably you roll a 1B/2A situation in net.
