What kind of mistakes should ownership be learning that they have shown zero ability to learn from? This time he hired an experience GM with relatively recent Stanley Cup pedigree to run the team and build a management team. Based on what Rutherford said in his intro presser, it sounded like Aquilini went and begged Rutherford to take the job. There's no Gillis getting Aquilini to hire him or a happy go lucky Trevor who is clearly out of his depth. I didn't come away from Rutherford's presser that Aquilini would rescind his offer if Rutherford demanded 100% autonomy and ability to undergo a 5 year rebuild.
Aquilini does seem to consistently place faith on his new hires only to lose it eventually. That's not an unusual approach as many of these owners sees themselves as some sort of saviors where the worse things are the more they need to be involved.
Obviously the process would be better if Aquilini actually interviewed people for the job but if he's not hiring some senior advisor to help with the process then it's just Aquilini deciding who he's going to hire. Is he going to hire a young bright mind with zero experience who thinks the best course is to do a proper rebuild, a guy who is willing to be his puppet, or will he hire a HOFer like Rutherford who sees it as a 2 year retool? At the end of the day, it's ownership making the decision.
