While I agree that they will throw around false rumors, we're late enough in the game that a credible source should be considered. Plus, they just got the patent for the same thing on Macs.

As said, I'll believe it when I see it. They spent so much money getting the banks to go along with Apple Pay, to get corporations to embrace TouchID, to input TouchID into Macs, etc. that I just can't help but think this is a false rumor.

It just doesn't make sense to me. It would be a massive step backwards.

I mostly agree, but it mainly comes down to speed for me. If I can pick up the phone, it wakes up, and reads my face and opens quick, then I'm fine with it. But I doubt this will be the case.

Microsft Hello and some of the Windows Phones got very quick with this but I have yet to see one work 100% of the time where you don't have to stare at the face of the phone for a second without blinking. At least the Iris-scanners. Hello was good facial recognition and so was Kinect. The tech is out there.

People will now be driving down the road holding their phone in front of their face to unlock their device instead of just holding it low and touching with your thumb or finger. Not that I condone anyone playing with their phone while driving but people WILL and do, do it.

How do you unlock at night? How do you unlock in a power outage? How do you unlock if you're held captive in the dark? All of this comes into play, though.

I don't see how this works at all. I also don't see how it's anywhere near as secure.

I would be pretty shocked if Touch ID is completely gone. If I'm betting, it's in the screen, but it could also be in the new huge power button.

Perhaps Apple will allow the user to wake the phone by force touch (or raising the phone as can be done now), and then allow a choice of optical recognition, rear-facing fingerprint sensor, on-screen password, or simply drawing a pattern on the screen with your finger to unlock the phone. I don't think they've achieved the Touch ID in the screen, but I have faith that they will make unlocking easy for everyone.

Well like with the front camera it can create light but this would be very annoying.

If they couldn't do it I'd rather have touch ID on the back. So you can seamlessly unlock the phone while picking it up like now. It even annoys me when I have to put in my code. lol

touch id is huge. my ipad air 2 has no touch id and have to type in my code to unlock it. when you use your phone everyday that slight change is huge haha

I'd have to strongly reconsider buying the new iPhone if the put it on the back. It's the worst place I could think of to put it.

All of this tech uses infrared. Which cares not for how much light you have.

Agreed. Sometimes I like my phone on its back on my desk and I tap the home button / fingerprint to login and check my notifications. I would have to start picking up the phone or lay it on its front then once unlocked flip it over.

It's sounding very possible that Apple drops the Touch ID all together and goes with facial recognition. Lame.

Facial recognition in my experience flat out does not work. Its not even that someone can just take a picture of you to unlock the phone. The times I've used it all 3 of my brothers were able to unlock my phone. It seems to be extremely primitive where it basically only tests for eye and skin color to unlock. Maybe Apple has developed something more advanced but I would be surprised.

Huh? Most facial recognition tech I have seen uses IR as well so it can see depth of facial features so someone cannot just take a picture of you. Most of them test for more than "eye and skin color".

Kinect was dead on unlocking different profiles within seconds of coming in view of it, the tech is there. That being said, I don't want to hold my phone to my face to unlock it.

I mentioned this a few posts back. Kinect was good but you are sitting on a couch and it does take a few seconds. It's not instant. Tech evolves and maybe someday someone will get it but I don't see how this works quickly on a phone.

I was talking to an Apple employee yesterday that said internally the company is fuming that stuff is leaking via their HomePod files that got out

Would love to see what is happening right now at that new campus they have. People are probably putting on 16-18 hour days easily

I'm hoping that Touch ID isn't gone but it seems to be looking that they are doing away with it. Based on stuff I have heard and what is leaking, they must either really feel they nailed the facial recognition tech, or putting Touch ID under the glass was too challenging

Rumor is that putting the TouchID under the glass was the plan, but they couldn't figure out how to mass produce the tech this go-around.

Personally, The facial rec. is going to really have to impress me, or I'm sticking with a 7 for a few years.

Here's a RUMORED look at what the 8 will feature and who has had the technology first, if any. Seems almost confirmed that there will be no Touch ID, instead relying on facial ID. It's also been said that Apple has been working on facial ID for years and that it's years ahead of Android/Qualcomm. Apparently, it only takes a millionth of a second (uhhh....we'll see).

I like Windows Hello on my laptop, uses a combination of the webcam and IR cam, logs you in with a second or two. Harder to use in the dark though, it works, but I don't know if it would work in total darkness, as both the screen and my backlit KB are fairly bright.

I personally like it better than other biometrics I've used, but a will and a way, it could probably still be defeated.

Apple is light years ahead of Qualcomm, at least on the CPU front, but it's going to a big change in their biometics, Face ID is going have to work.every.time, otherwise, people are going to get pissy.

I just picked up a set of AirPods to try out. I have to say.

The tech is amazing. Like nothing I’ve ever seen. The W1 chip is one of the more revolutionary things I’ve seen in a while. The instant pairing is kind of mind blowing.

I needed a compact set of buds to go with my Sony MDX wireless cans. I also wanted wireless (I have a set of Bose Soundsport Wireless for working out and biking). I had an AMEX coupon ($25 statement credit for $150+ purchase) so I figured why not?

Sound is obviously not at the level of my MDX cans, but it definitely seems a step above the regular AirPods. Fit is a bit tighter as well (anecdotal though).

I may end up keeping them. Have 45 days to decide. The charging case and overall combo is really unbeatable for portability.
