With the 281st pick in the draft, the Yomiuri Giants select RP Mark "The Shark" Melancon

Mark may not have the high end velocity that most closers have, but what he lacks in velcoity he more than makes up for with an unhittable cut fastball, pinpoint control, and the ability to avoid the gopher ball with a very sexy groundball rate.

With the 283rd pick the Montreal Royals select SP Jim Kaat.

jimkaat.jpg

16x Gold Glove
3x All-Star
World Series champion (1982)
283 wins (3.45 ERA)

According to Bill James, Jim Kaat was 27-15 in big games, with a 2.84 ERA. Had he not played for some average to below average teams, he'd have much more respect. One of the most consistent pitchers of the 1960s, his career stretched over 4 decades.

With pick 292, the Pittsburgh Pirates are pleased to select, SP Stephen Strasburg.

7 years in, still active. In the 5th spot, probably looking at Strasburg to start right about 20 games, with a swing man ready to jump in to give any of our starters in the rotation a breather to keep everyone fresh for the playoffs. I wouldn't pitch him any higher up in the rotation or a bigger workload, nor would I pass up on his talent. So I think the 5th slot suits him perfect.

ERA+ 124

FIP 2.85

SO/W ratio of 4.59

K9/10.6

We are extremely pleased to select the clutch Bernie Williams as our 5th outfielder. He provides a solid option off the bench as a switch hitter and playoff performer. In 121 career playoff games, Bernie hit 22 HRs and 80 RBIs.
