The St. Louis Cardinals are pleased to select their 5th starter, HOF, SP - Bob Lemon. Lemon and Paige were teammates on the 1948 World Series winning Cleveland Indians team, only in the ATD their roles are pretty much reversed. Great resume for a 5th starter who missed 3 seasons due to military service.

Toronto Blue Jays select:

RP - Roy Face

Face was the first major leaguer to save 20 games more than once, leading the league three times and finishing second three times; in 1959 he set the still-standing major league record for winning percentage (.947), and single-season wins in relief, with 18 wins against only one loss. He held the NL record for career games pitched (846) from 1967 until 1986, and the league record for career saves (193) from 1962 until 1982; he still holds the NL record for career wins in relief (96), and he held the league mark for career innings pitched in relief (1,211 1⁄3) until 1983. On his retirement, he ranked third in major league history in pitching appearances, behind only Hoyt Wilhelm and Cy Young, and second in saves behind Wilhelm. Nicknamed "The Baron", he holds the Pirates franchise records for career games (802) and saves (188).

6× All-Star (1959–1961²)
World Series champion (1960)

Win–loss record 104–95
Earned run average 3.48
Strikeouts 877
Saves 193

The Naps select Martin Dihigo.

Couldn't pass on this kind of talent any longer. I'll figure out where to play him later.

Pick #340: Negro League SS Willie 'The Devil' Wells. Reputed as a five-tool shortstop, he'll make a fine fill-in for Nomar when he misses time, and pinch-hitter/defensive replacement/pinch-runner for the bench.

Wells%20Willie%20Plaque_NBL.png

-Credited with a .320/.380/.519 split in 2824 documented Negro League AB's by Baseball Reference, with 100 HR, 353 RBI and 90 SB's in those AB's
-Ranked #86 on Bill James' Top 100 all-time players list

From Wells' HOF bio:

The only woman elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Effa Manley, called Willie Wells “The finest shortstop, black or whiteâ€. Wells played in an era where the color of his skin kept him out of the Major Leagues, but Wells had a very successful career in baseball’s Negro leagues and Canada, as well as Mexico and Cuba where he played against white major leaguers. It was during his time in Mexico that he was christened with the nick name “El Diabloâ€. Because of his unbelievable play at the shortstop position the players in the Mexican League began to say “don’t hit it to shortstop because ‘El Diablo†plays thereâ€. Cool Papa Bell recalled “The shortstops I’ve seen, Wells could cover ground better than any of them. Willie Wells was the greatest shortstop in the worldâ€

During his twenty plus year career on the diamond, Wells was the epitome of the term “five-tool playerâ€. He could hit for average and power, run and was a tremendous defensive shortstop with a wonderfully accurate arm. Tigers Hall of Fame second baseman Charlie Gehringer called him “the kind of player you always wanted on your team, he played the way all great players play - with everything he had."

During his career Wells was selected to play in the annual East-West All-Star Game eight times, despite the fact that the game didn’t begin until 1933, and Wells had already played nine full seasons of pro-ball. He also led the Chicago American Giants to back-to-back pennants in two different leagues, capturing the Negro Southern League title in 1932 and then the inaugural pennant of the new Negro National League the following season. Wells was also part of the Newark Eagles famed “million dollar infield†in the late 1930s alongside future Hall of Famers Mule Suttles and Ray Dandridge. Shortly before his death in 1989 Wells recalled "I just wanted to be the best. I never wanted to lose."

Wells was also a mentor to younger players including Jackie Robinson and XXXXX XXXXX. XXXXX recalled “Wells showed me everything he knew. We talked about hitting—he was a really good curve ball hitter—about moving around on different pitchers, especially left-handers, moving up in the box, moving back, trying to throw the pitcher off, trying to take a peek back to see how the catcher i holding his target in a close gameâ€.

With the 345th pick in the draft, the Yomiuri Giants select LF/CF/1B Sherwood "Sherry" Robert Magee

Sherry-Magee.jpg

Today we would call Sherry Magee a five-tool player: he could hit, run, field, throw, and hit with power. For more than a decade he was the Philadelphia Phillies' clean-up hitter and greatest offensive star, setting the all-time team record in stolen bases (387) and ranking among the top ten in almost every other category. Magee's defense was nearly the equal of his offense; sensational catches with his back to home plate were his trademark, and Pirates scout Frank Haller commented that his every throw was "on a line and right on target." He was undoubtedly the National League's most valuable player in 1910, and either he or Johnny Evers deserved the appellation in 1914. That season one Philadelphia writer called Magee "probably the best all-around ball player in the National League," and a Cincinnati reporter went a step further: "To my mind Sherwood Magee is one of the best all-around players the game has ever seen."

Career Highlights

NL Batting Champion (1910)
4 time RBI Leader
2 time Slugging% Leader
Snubbed for at least 2 MVPs

Lead league in Batting Average, On Base%, Slugging%, OPS, and OPS+ in 1910

Career Stats

.291/.364/.427
.790 OPS (137 OPS+)
1176 RBI
1112 Runs Scored
2169 Hits
425 Doubles
166 Triples
83 Home Runs
441 Stolen Bases

624 Strikeouts
736 Walks

59.0 bWAR

Sherry fits the "Bad Boy" image I'm cultivating....

Sherry was enjoying another banner year in 1911, but his season-and career-were marred by his actions in the third inning of a game in St. Louis on July 10. With the Phils leading, 2-1, Magee came to bat with one out and Dode Paskert on second and Hans Lobert on first. With two strikes, rookie umpire Bill Finneran called Magee out on what appeared to be a high pitch, prompting Magee to turn away in disgust and throw his bat high in the air. Finneran yanked off his mask and threw him out of the game. Sherry, who had been heading to the bench, suddenly turned and attacked the umpire, clutching him for a second before hitting him with a quick left just above the jaw. With blood spurting from his face, Finneran fell to the ground on his back, apparently unconscious.
