Relief pitchers went a lot earlier this year. That is the big difference.

Blame the 2016 postseason I guess

But yeah that's the biggest shift in value...a lot of hitters and even some SP's draft position went way down while relievers' went up for the most part.

Relievers are going earlier because they tend to start going when most people have 7 or 8 batters and at least their top 3 starters. So with 4 less teams, it makes sense that relievers are going 50 picks earlier than last year.

Well in a 20 team league I had Eck-Reardon-Tug as relievers and it didn't help me much. People still tend to focus on batting order and rotation when judging teams.

I liked your team quite a bit last year. I think I had it in my top 3.

It took me a while to do the math on that, but when I did that's when I picked my next two relievers before the quality dropped further. Ironically there's still one or two guys on the board that I was considering before I picked Uehara (Foulke was one).

Melancon is a great steal at this point and I still kick myself for not selecting him. Apart from the strikeouts, he's not that different from relievers like Chapman and Jansen.

Yeah, Melancon's a really elite modern day closer, but lacking those K's and radar gun readings.

That cutter tho...

And on top of that, he's super nice guy. I've had season tickets from the Pirates for some years now and my seats are right next to the bullpen door and he gives away balls and autographs to kids like crazy. I've also seen a former Pirates' pitcher get a pizza delivered to the bullpen from a concession stand. It was hilarious.

Yeah, you went ultra short pen with 4 arms. Even with Smoltz being your "long guy", I couldn't envision the workload with only 9 pitchers.

There would be a lot of occasions where you could literally have your entire pen "unavailable".

It's been 16 hours, go ahead and pick. There's no clock freeze at night here.

Well I didn't pick him to pitch. I picked him to do colour commentary for Royals games. Should have been clearer.

Also depends whether your 6th starter had pitched out of pen before. It's minor but still matters.
