You say no one picked here will move the needle, but I would think a Dave Winfield might.

It was between him and Dawson for RF. Went with the Hawk for versatility. But Dave kept dropping and dropping.

I would have picked him earlier but I stupidly assumed he was already taken.

I'll try to update the first picks post with who is currently on the clock as we wind down and the picks are 4 hour duration. PM's will likely become less frequent as we have some missed picks mixed in. If your math tells you you're up, go ahead and pick don't wait for a PM from a team that missed a 4 hour window..

Had i known Winfield was going to be available this long i never would've grabbed Belle when i did.

I shot my wad on outfielders a bit early (and there's still at least one guy left I'd have been happy with as my fifth OF'er), but by the same token other than jumping for a backup catcher I don't know what other offensive position I should have filled first. Palmiero and Grich are fine at 1B/bat off the bench and 2B, I didn't love most of what was available at SS/3B so I took a flier on Wells at SS and can just shift Pete over to third the handful of games Brooks needs off, but he played 150 or so games a year so it's not really a big deal.

When I look team's benches, I don't care as much about individual players, I more focus on the overall composition. Is there a good mix of lefty/righty hitters? Is every position covered off with a capable backup? Are there is good mix of speed guys vs. power guys? etc. If the answer is yes to those questions, the bench will get top marks from me.

I typically just edit a previous post of mine to get the current HF clock and compare it to the timestamp from the last pick made.

Me too, but currently I can't for the life of me figure out which pick was the last "legit" one that started the clock. td picked, but he clocked out, so his pick isn't the timestamp for the current clock.

Winfield is a hell of a ball player, and certainly better than 379. However i think he was just a victim of circumstances here. This is the smallest draft we've had in a while, and it cost him starting status. If we had 18 or 20 teams, he would have been gone a hundred players ago at least. Good pick.

Winfield is a good pick here. The strangest thing about his resume is that he has 7 gold gloves but has the worst dWar of any player in the Hall of Fame at -23.7.

Once we start getting into bullpen and bench guys, the BPA strategy starts going out the window to make room for position scarcity and players who will fit in well with the structure of your team. Winfield is a nice bat to have off the bench. Personally I never saw him play much so the most I know about him was the derisive nickname that Steinbrenner gave him, "Mr. May"

My fondest memory of Winfield was when an undrafted star teammate of his was supposed to sign autographs at a card show back in '85 or '86 and he cancelled a few days earlier. They didn't announce the replacement only that they were able to get another Yankee to attend. We were walking around the show when they announced it was Winfield who was the replacement and since a lot of people didn't go after the other player cancelled, we got to spend a good 10 minutes or talking with him. Really, really nice guy.

He had a huge arm. He also set himself up to make spectacular leaping grabs because of his enormity and athleticism, which added to this allure that he could protect RF efficiently. But in doing so, he limited his range.

He's obviously not 7 Gold Gloves good, but I would also take dWAR with a grain of salt. I mean Alomar doesn't have that good of a dWAR but clearly that isn't the player we all saw.

Plus honestly, should a Yankee player ever win a GG for playing RF?

Exactly. I know I wanted guys that could easily fill in for starter's day off, and provide good d and bat off the bench. Which, with less teams, I think all teams have that covered more or less.

But also, with these incredible lineups, I preferred 12th pitcher over that 6th bench guy. That was more important to me. So with key C and SS backup positions filled, I went with 2 elite super utility guys in Zobrist, and Phillips to be covered in all areas. Both of which are totally comfortable moving positions in game. And Joey Votto to round out the bench. With these lineups, I don't I see my manager going 5 or 6 deep from the bench in any one game. But pitching match ups? Yeah, you don't want to burn out arms in the pen, so I want to manage arms. While bench players? there is no such concern of over usage. If anything, the opposite. Finding playing time to keep them active and loose. As these guys are used to playing everyday.

Definitely will take a modern approach with pitching, and give Bochy full use of a big pen, should he need it or want special match ups.
