Not sure I agree with Nylander at center. Wouldn't it make more sense to put Domi there given his experience at the position?

This is training camp. Nothing is set in stone one way or another through the next few weeks. They haven't even had 1 ice session and people are already losing their minds.

The Leafs depth at center is thin so it's more than fine to give Nylander a shot there. This is the time to test lines and formations. Leafs added Bertuzzi and Domi on the wings, and the wing depth is very good, so this is a good way to distribute the wealth.

I am OK with Nylander playing center. I loved JT on the wing with ROR. I realize Nylander and ROR play different games, but I think JT should be transitioned to the wing at this point anyways.

This is going to be a big step. It makes perfect sense to have him PK, especially in situations that require some push back. I hope Matthews' conditioning is at his best.
Not sure how much of a plan it really is, Keefe mentioned right off that if you give him PK minutes you're losing him for some ES minutes following the PK, of which he is among the best in the league in (ES time that is).

To me, Connor Timmins adding weight and getting above 200 pounds is huge. Hopefully all solid gym work, and the weight will help him in the Dzone.

Domi ... 208 at 5'10"... gained 14 pounds? Hopefully gym weight... that's not an insignificant weight at 5'10.

Bertuzzi gained 14 pounds too...

You've got to hope that Domi and Bertuzzi are being talked too, about playing a heavier game.

Tavares dropping some weight probably will help with the skating, which he said he's worked on in the offseason... probably good.

14 pounds off of Holmberg??? Was he chubby before and now in shape? I don't know.

Going to nickname Hildeby... House... or something...

Knies is a big boy.

That is weight gain over a year, not the summer.

I didn't intend to insinuate that it was just over the summer..just to hope that much of the weight gains are off ice training.

With Domi in particular, that's a lot of size, if the guy is lean. He's been a pest in the past, but not a guy who is particularly physical. I can only hope, that some of his Dad's reputation here wears off on him a little and he starts to throw some of that weight around. Like 5'10" and 208 lbs is a thick dude (if lean), and with a low center of gravity, he could do some damage. Some of Dad's aggression wears off, and he's a pretty useful guy...

The QC
Matthews interview was good. Didn't share too much new, but said all the right things.

Marner was good too, and I actually really appreciated his response to the Babdork question - did not in any way give any indication nothing happened, but also smoothly moved past it.

JT with the personal statement to start, ha ha, love it. Acknowledged the up and comers in the division which will limit any free win nights. Focus on continuing his skating improvements, big if true; was visible early last season. Great answer on the Nylander question too, relating his final year of contract season vs Willies; spoiler, they are nothing alike lol.

Mo mostly said a lot of what we have heard from him before, motivated, improved, learned, more experience, etc. Mentioned he disagrees with the notion the room is too quiet, but, has been able to spend time with the new players and they fit in well. Mentioned conversations with Mattews leading up to the contract signing, and how Matthews wants to be in Toronto. Simmons with what I thought was actually a good question asking if Morgan gets any insight about competition from his (I think now wife) partner... Mo laughted while stating yes, me things she has tore a strip or two off him lol.

All players commented on the new roster additions, and how that will change up their team a bit... would lead me to believe the players have discussed this a fair bit amongst themselves. They all also mentioned surprise with Dubas leaving, and all emphasized the communication that happened between the players and then once Treliving came in.

I had made that assumption myself until I re-read the post, thought maybe others had.

Domi will 100% try a make a name for himself here and it shouldn't be hard to do. I expect him to do something opening night, I know he's not a fighter but I think he starts to become one.

I would think Tavares has worked on his skating every summer since he was a kid.

Domi can fight... he's pretty good at it.. but he just doesn't do it very often. He'll probably fight more here, and that's great and all.. but I'd love to see him become physical more, hitting everything that moves.

I have no doubt he will bring all of that.
IMO, he's looking long term. If he flames out here like he has in other cities he's going to start running out of destinations.

No doubt, but I think this is more about what he is working on. The game has gotten quicker... so I suspect he is doing different training (and he has said as much) over these past two summers. I only mentioned it because it is the number one issue we all have with JT on this forum.

Tavares is interesting, wonder if he has been working on speed work a lot.

Somehow Rielly keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Timmins could be interesting at that weight, wondering how that'll look.

I know some of you will be very excited about this.

From the clips I've seen of him before he actually has decent hands + speed, not opposed to such a project if they have skill along with the size.

Wonder how many of these are accurate? Obviously the players aren't shrinking...

Timmins weight gain is interesting for sure if it's remotely accurate.
Be interesting to know what these guys weighed at the end of last season. I'd be surprised if Timmins was far off that weight when the season ended.

I think Timmins is one of our more underrated assets. I've seen some people talk about waiving him to get under the cap and I think that's crazy, this guy could still end up a 2nd pair RHD.

:thumbu: 100%.
I think there is zero chance he gets waived.

I just can't see it either, risking losing him. There's already not a lot behind the 7 guys you expect to stick with up here. What's behind them, Lajoie, Benoit and... nothing else? Can't risk it.

I mean there's always some lunch bucket you can swap for to fill injuries but Timmins has some legit upside.

It's kind of funny listing +/-3 lbs
That's literally just a normal daily deviation for a human - fluctuating between meals, movements, and can even be attributed to the most week's worth of sleep, hormones, stress, etc., not necessarily an off-season of good or bad training

Seeing these fully grown adults grow and shrink inches is sometimes a little surprising, but the musculoskeletal system can surprisingly stretch and compress quite a bit, especially as professional athletes
