Any computer gamers here?
My Dell laptop is on its last legs (its 7 years old and it has an i5-5200U CPU just to give you an idea of what kind of old tech I'm using). I mostly just use it for surfing the net. I just bought an ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 (2022) Gaming Laptop with a i7-12700H CPU and a RTX 3060 GPU. Its an early Christmas present.
I wanted/needed an updated laptop to edit the photos I'm always taking (I use Lightroom and Topaz Labs programs and up til now have been using my newer (3 yrs old) desktop) so that will be the laptop's primary purpose other than net surfing. However, since the laptop is advertised as a a gaming computer I thought I might try out this gaming thing.... Honest confession... the last time I played a computer game was Mario Bros on a Wii. So.... I have no idea what beginner level game I should buy to get my feet wet. Honestly I don't even know how you control the players using a computer keyboard.
Any advice?
The long dark is a cool survival game to get your feet wet. It doesn't require a ton of twitch movement to play well. I think it's an indie game made by some dude in Victoria. You can change the controls to use a controller if you want to go that route. It's relatively easy to hook up a wired Xbox remote to a PC and install drivers I believe.
Stardew Valley if you want to learn a lot of random interesting things on the side.
For your old Dell laptop, definitely consider cloning your old HDD to a SSD to keep that thing going as a computer for surfing purposes. Even with the age of that laptop, it'll still be a solid option to use on the side with that upgrade. I had plenty of laptops that were over 10 years and still going strong after an SSD upgrade. I usually cost around $150 for the drive and another 30-45 minutes of leg work. I usually ended up gifting them to people who just wanted something reasonably quick and convenient to surf the web with. It was always up to them if they wanted to spend $50-60 bucks as well to replace the battery so that it would have a few hours of battery life.
On a different note, I've had a persistent cough for over a month now. This is so tiring and annoying to deal with. I often find myself sleeping and napping rather than doing fun stuff. Stupid covid/RSV/flu trifecta.
I bought a bottle of Tomatin cask strength with French oak finish. No age statement, but it's a private bottling for the liquor store with a date stamp. From start to bottling, it is around 15 years. I'm kinda excited to crack it open with some buddies during the holidays and see what it tastes like. My buddy was saying he really enjoyed the 12 year American oak finish, but based on descriptions online for American vs French oak hogshead, he thinks he might like this one even more.
