Fun story, I did the "stick in bike wheel meme" in real life.

Riding on a path, figured I'd miss this stick laying beside it. Well small tree branch. Didn't see the bit sticking up. Proceeded to snag it, and flip it into my chain and tangled everything. Broken derailleur and hanger, and the chain is nicely jammed up so it's probably borked too.

Thankfully only 5 blocks from home. Didn't crash at least, just came to a stop. Still had to do the walk of shame though haha.

Haha that's not so bad. I was riding my bike home from work in the winter years ago when the crank arm fell off. I had no tools with me and I didn't have change to take the bus so I walked home.

For 3 hours.

In the snow.

And to further add insult to injury, it wasn't until years later I found out there was a community bike shop quite literally minutes from where the crank arm had fallen off so I could have just popped by, bolted it back on, and made it home in less than 30 minutes. Now I volunteer at said bike shop haha

First trip out of Canada since COVID. Really enjoyed New York the first time I went, so decided to go for a spin there a second time.

There seem to be more restrictions here than in Alberta, but it seems mask wearing is mostly a idgaf thing at this point (more prevalent than Calgary but still). Still have to get used to all the jaywalking (and adjusting to not doing it when I get back to Calgary LOL).

Also the flight into the city scared the living shit out of me. Strafing so close to downtown Manhattan that if anything went wrong… I don’t want to indulge further.

Sandy Hook families awarded nearly 1 Billion $ in compensatory damages in the Alex Jones trial. Punitive damages have yet to be awarded. Wow.
Of course, the families will probably never collect a dime and be on the hook for all their legal fees since Alex Jones has probably hidden all his money and will say f*** you to those families. Alex Jones says he will appeal.

Probably should take the Covid 19 Special out of the thread title now as its currently a bit confusing as we really aren't talking much about Covid these days.

We had all the restrictions lifted last March or April, I think. Life's been pretty normal since then, except for war, energy crisis, inflation and all those other small things.

How many bottles of scotch did you end up with from the proceeds from selling your car? :naughty:

I've been at my cottage for couple of weeks now so I can't check but I bought this today as a present for myself 😀

And yes, there's one 16yo Lagavulin at home waiting for me (and two 8yo I bought earlier just in case I can't find the 16yo)

I purchased a home in Calgary last Winter and am now starting to contemplate home improvement stuff. Anyone have any tips/tricks for developing a basement and building a garage? Neither are urgent for me, but would be nice in the few years.

Only 4 bottles in exchange for your car? Damn inflation! ;)

Those are tasty bottles :D congrats!

Triple every budget you think it'll take. Quadruple the time you think it'll require to complete.

For the dust in a basement prior to working there, a robot vacuum is excellent for for time saving and doing a good job. Just make sure you clean out the filters of microfine dust every once in a while.

Stoke me a clipper.
Two tips.

Install a floor drain in your garage. You don’t know you need this until you have it.

Pay someone to do the drywall. Or accept there will be six weeks of your life that you could spend doing literally anything else, and accept there will be imperfections you will simply need to live with. I speak from experience - I used to do this kind of work when I was much younger.

Oh, and for the rough basement...

1. Rough in any cabling (ethernet, HVAC etc.) before you seal it up.
2. Pay someone to extend the vents to the floor and the air intake on the ceiling to facilitate convection. The basement will be less cold or less hot. Make sure all vents are at least 10 ft from the furnace to muffle utility room sounds.
3. Underlay the floor so it's not as cold. Better yet, heated floors.
4. Don't cheap out on bathrooms in the basement. Adding that shower/bath into the basement might improve basement bedrooms and/or post workout showers for basement gyms.
5. Electrical outlets/ethernet/in wall wiring everywhere for future flexibility.
5A. A few on the ceiling are worth contemplating too (ceiling mounted projector).
5B. Extras where you think a home theatre might go.
6. To future proof home theatre spot, extra outlets/ethernet and reinforced plywood on wall for wall mounting TVs. If in doubt, do two locations for the home theatre spot. It's still useful stuff if someone decides to home office in that area instead.
7. Do rough ins (ie: Plumbing for wet bar). It'll cost less by a lot to do that before basement is finished. It also allows for you to put projects on side burners (ie: basement bar) and it'll be easy to finish at a later date.
8. Don't skimp on stairs and railings to the basement. A few hundred bucks here will make it better and feel more grand as you go down.

9. Don't hesitate to upgrade equipment and tools on projects $10K or more. You might pay a few hundred to a few grand on it, but save that and more on labour/time and hassle. I've bought couple hundred dollar power tools for GC that I told them to keep and it'd save me hours vs days at their rates. I bought this thing for a contractor I hired halfway through him manually chiseling door hinges. The first 10 doors took him half a day to get the edges of the hinges just right. The next 20 doors took him a few hours with this simple template tool.

Tell your wife you can't do it without her help. After one weekend down there working her ass off she probably won't like it. It will reduce the future nagging about when you're going to finish the basement significantly. ;)

Devils fan coming in Peace. I live in Medicine Hat . I try to make it to as many Flames games as I can . I am a doe- hard Devils fan , have been since I was about 8 years old . That’s a looooing time ago.
I follow the Flames Amd if I had to pick a second team , they would be it.

Amywho , I am looking to get tickets to the Saturday , November 5th game at the dome vs. my Devils.
I want to try to get the best ticket(s) as possible. I am looking for 2 seats together (my brother is a huge Devils fan as well).
I normally just get my tickets from TicketMaster , however, it looks like tickets in the section I was hoping to sit is around $400 or higher (behind Visitors bench ).
Can anyone recommend a different website to use or is Kijiji a viable option?
I would greatly appreciate it if someone can recommend a site where I can maybe get two tickets a little cheaper than what I can find through Ticketmaster

Anyone watching the World Cup?

People give hockey broadcasts a lot of flack, but holy shit... this is the biggest sports event in the world and so far:

- a goal was called back on offside and it took about 10 minutes after until they showed a replay of where it occurred
- the first goal came on a penalty, but right before the penalty, a defender made a spectacular goal line save and not one time did this even get a mention, let alone a replay
- at the end of the half, Qatar missed a tap in, but the play was very obviously offside anyway and not one ounce of recognition of this from the commentators

I'm pulling my hair out over here.

The round robin doesn’t really interest me. Obviously I’ll watch the Canada games but I usually tune in for the knockout round.

If all goes well I'll have a new job by February, moving closer to where I'm from. And closer to my cottage and where my elderly mum lives. Same salary as my current job, but 38 days of annual leave.

Unfortunately no public transport there, I think I need to buy a car just to get to supermarket, or to my cottage. Who would have thought.

What a f***ing Friday. First I won our company's monthly quiz and got a christmas ham (I'm gonna choose organic, locally produced 7kg piece just because that's the most expensive one you can find).

Then I went to shopping and on my way home, at the only crossing I need to use, some f***ing idiot turning left on green lights almost ran me over. Yes, I had green as well and drivers need to give way to pedestrians crossing. No more than 10cm between me and the car, and the guy was speeding there, not even slowing down.

Time for a drink.
