Have a buddy that grew up in Hagersville ..it's grown but still a great location and they have a weekend outdoor concert "Hagersville Rocks" which is actually mostly country musics acts lol

Edit to add: my buddy was a suspect in the National News worthy Hagersville Tire fire that burnt for years ....

I got laid off on Dec. 27, and I was looking to chase some good money (and pension hours), so I took a job working on a solar field in Rangeley, Maine. The contractor is paying $10/hr over the local union scale, plus $100 per diem. My neighbor's friend's parents own a place with a guest house right on one of the lakes just 15 miles from the job site, so I have a place to stay during the work week for very short money.

I just finished my first week up there (came home for the weekend) and it has been brutally cold! It's like someone dropped me on the set of Rocky IV when he was in Siberia training to fight Ivan Drago. It has snowed every day I've been up there so far. Crazy. I am definitely in the mountains for sure! Beautiful to look at, but it's going to take some getting used to.

The guys I'm working with are pretty cool, but almost all of them are 'travelers' (from other jurisdictions) like myself. There are guys from California; Florida; Pennsylvania; Vermont; Connecticut; Michigan and Massachusetts. Only two guys from Maine. Maybe most of the Maine guys were smart enough to pass on this one. The underground work hasn't been completed yet but should have been done months ago. The Business Manager from Local 567 told me that there was about a month of work left on the job. Bullshit. There's three or four months left, easily. The project is grossly understaffed and the project manager is on his first solar job. Ever.

So, I'm going to give it a month and hopefully work picks up with the company that laid me off in Boston or I find something worthwhile closer to home. I'm three and a half hours from home.

Lastly... those of you that live in Quebec actually have better morning sports talk hosts than we do in Boston. I can pick up the TSN affiliate in Montreal and those guys are way more tolerable than "toucher and rich" or whoever's on now in Boston. Those guys actually talk about sports and I haven't wanted to smash them in the head with a hammer because of their assholery. I still listen to satellite radio and podcasts for all my Boston sports news, but for a change of pace, those guys aren't horrible. I was listening to them talk about the Habs losing to the Sharks the other morning. That was fun.

Just renewed my HF account for the year....best 12$ I will spend all year!!!
Me too!!!

Wow I am surprised to hear of IBEW layoffs in town. Lots of work at MGH starting soon, not sure who has it though. Good to see work so far north go union.

Not sure who has MGH, but the project I was on had wrapped up and the contractor I was with had slowed down. It happens. They were kind enough to wait until after Christmas and there’s a good chance I’ll be rehired when things pick up again with them.

This is definitely an adventure for sure. Thankfully I’m close enough to come home on the weekend and it’s not going to last that long.

We had both Megan and my family over to celebrate Jake’s birthday yesterday. Since I don’t spend much time with my family these days, it’s much more glaring how different we have grown when I do see them. My sister, especially, has truly become Eeyore.

Everything is a complaint about how hard life is and how expensive everything is. In a lot of ways, she has become my mother. Everything sucks, and it’s never getting better. Not that life is all sunshine and rainbows on my end, but the constant negativity will consume you.

I get needing to vent sometimes, but get it out of your system, go read a book, go to church, watch a movie, go for a run.

I guess I am fortunate that I have been able to break the cycle.

Whenever someone tells me they love their job, I always ask if they'd do it for free. I've never had anyone say they would do it for free which means they don't love their job. It means they can tolerate it better than some other even more shitty jobs they've had. There's a reason why they pay you to show up, because nobody would actually go if they didn't.
You’d get a different answer if people didn’t have bills to pay.

I have been looking into getting Portuguese citizenship through my grandfather. Found a super nice "consultant" in RI who helps you though the process and translates documents/submits them. One thing I need to do is pass a language test. They are offered twice a year in Boston, Newark, SF, and Washington. I checked every day at 7am for an opening, nothing. Last week it opened at 8am and Boston was booked by 10am so I missed out for 2024.

We were going to Portugal anyways in April so I checked there and there was a test open in Lisbon. I was hoping to take the test after my trip but I think it's worth a shot to take it there since I was not going to take it in 2024 anyways without traveling to DC or Toronto. I get the results in June so I can submit my package (assuming I pass). Should take 2ish years. Once I get citizenship, I can work anywhere in the EU and pass it down to my kids.

Never thought I would be looking for "outs" form the USA but given the current climate it is good to keep our options open, even if it is just for the kids. I would much rather them live in Western Europe than the west coast. They would get more vacation to come visit.
I’m dating a Portuguese gal. Parents grew up in Peniche. I bought her an ancestry test and was really hoping for something wild, but it pretty much had her pegged as fresh off the boat.

I’ve picked up just a few words and phrases from listening to her family, when in doubt I just take the SH sound, drop the H and just pretend it’s Spanish. A lot of it is close.

I won’t spell these right…

Espera
Vamoj
Quackish - spelled that wrong on purpose
Moyu
Mala
Masa
Je sabe
Aye courish - again spelled way wrong
Bom dia
Obrigada
avo and vu
Tia/tio which for some reason has a to prefix sometimes. Haven’t figured that one out yet
Beijing/BJBJ
Portuguese is similar to the Spain dialect. They are neighbors. Nice place to visit. It is cheap over there. Many people that have land there have migrated some else for a better opportunity. The dialect varies. It’s a soft S and we pronounce all letters in the word. 100% Portuguese…….

Wow, someone from the continent in Eastern, MA, a rarity. 99% are from the Azores. My family is from close by, Obidos.

I had the same results from ancestry, half 100% portuguese, those people don't leave.
Western MA, almost all from the mainland.

For Christmas my daughter gave me our next away Bruins game. We are going to see the Bs vs the Pens in Pittsburgh. I have never been there. The game is in April.

Hopefully I will be feeling good then
I hear Pittsburgh is lovely that time of year, and I hope the Bruins smash the Pens 12-0 for you :)

If I went into a joint real estate deal as follows:

Erin and I put down 150k on a house and carry a mortgage of 650k for a property valued at 800

Our friend is listed on the mortgage, and pays 1500/month for the basement apartment but doesn’t put anything down

Then after 5 years he leaves

How would one calculate his buyout?

He’d be a renter and not on any official paperwork. Why would he be on the mortgage? What are you buying out? He didn’t put anything towards the house.

I mean, technically, I suppose you could look at his rent ($1500 *60), or $90k and buy him out at a percentage of that but I don’t know why you would. What is the interest rate on the mortgage? Pay him at that % of what was spent?

Also a different situation if you needed his income to secure the mortgage.

Personally, I wouldn’t do this.

I get the personal concerns but those I can tackle - just wanted to understand the math if he should expect any equity from whatever 60X1500 would amount to

I guess it depends. What’s the going rate for rent in the area? How much are they paying above that, if anything? I’d be open to paying back anything above standard rent but overall would look at it as rent paid and they are t owed anything.

Again, unless you need that income on the mortgage to qualify. Then it’s a different situation since you’re getting something from it.
