While it's not what I expected and seems a bit weird to me, the one interesting part of the sequence of moves is that they're taking two very niche roster spots (emergency catcher who allows Kirk to DH but won't get much playing time and LH 1B/DH who also probably won't get many at bats) into one player. I would prefer Collins in AAA getting some time to work on his hitting, but I like the consolidation part of it.

I kind of hope the go with 9 relievers and give Lukes a spot, but I doubt it at this point.

They don't have a 40 man roster spot for Lukes so unless you want to DFA someone like Thornton you can't. 10 relievers seems like a lot but teams use 8 normally, and with starters likely going an inning less than usually for a start or 2 that like 10 extra innings you need to fill for 2 weeks. Plus only 1 off day for the first month. I would prefer having an 11th reliever and only 3 bench TBH.

I still think you could get away with 9 if you did a good job strategically using your multi-inning guys like Stripling and Pearson when he comes back.

The problem here, of course, is Charlie is historically bad at doing that very thing.

I’m guessing they weren’t impacted by the lockout like MLB.

But AA, A+, and A doesn't start until Friday. Usually all all the minors leagues start at the same time. It's usually a few days behind MLB starting. I'm not so confused why they're starting tomorrow because MLB was supposed to start this past weekend. Just confused why they're 3 days ahead of the rest of the minors.

Yeah, minor leaguers are not part of the MLBPA. That's why teams were able to sign players to minor league deals during the lockout and why minor league camps opened as usual.

Ok I'm officially lost. Saucedo is on the team I guess. What happens if Borucki is hurt? Thornton?

There are so many different options and factors with the bullpen that I don't even want to guess what's going to happen beyond the obvious 5-6.

You say "DFA Thornton" like it's a bad thing.

Zack Collins optioned to Buffalo, as I suspected and hoped. I think 11 relievers probably happens. The only other realistic alternative to that is Lukes as a 5th OF, but with 4 other OF plus Biggio able to play there I'm not sure if that's more or less likely than the 11th reliever.

So Parades is the next MVP and whoever they draft with that pick will be the best prospect in the league in about 3 years

Good news is the Rays have traded away a lot of their Jays killers now.

Bad news is that they probably received a whole new batch of Jays killers in those trades.

Glad to hear Collins will be in Buffalo to start the year. I assume now they're just gonna go ahead with all the relievers for April.
