I actually think the reason is quite simple, Zach Collins and Greg Bird just have too much overlap. Would rather have Collins and keep a 40 man spot open for another player.
I would still guess Collins starts in Buffalo and someone like Lukes gets the spot instead.

I'm definitely surprised about Bird, though. It seemed like he had earned a chance.

Never thought Bird was a great fit with the Jays desire for positional flexibility from their reserves, but I really don't get it in concert with the Reese trade.

If Kirk plus 8 starters, Raimel is 10, other 2B is 11, Lukes would only be 12. Have to carry 13 position players come May 2, so it's likely we start with 13.

Lukes is 27, and he def made a solid case.

My thoughts on the McGuire trade have definitely changed if Collins is here over Bird.

If this is the case, Jansen should catch as starter, Kirk as backup and primary DH, and Collins will be emergency backup while we work with him at learning 1B (until May).

On May 1, we send Collins down and call up someone like Lopez to be 13th man.

So Bird opted out. Makes sense if he can find a team with a weak offense. He was never going to get many AB's here anyways.

It's funny, because the McGuire trade should have paved a route to a bunch of DH ABs.
DH will be used as a rest day, we'll be seeing regulars, especially Springer, rotated all season. There's already two catchers to platoon, carrying 3 catchers never made much sense. Of course, now there's a spot open, so Ramirez is clearly on his way.

Kirk is going to DH quite a bit. He's made a strong case with his bat.

Yeah agree with this...assuming both stay healthy wouldn't be surprised to see Springer/Kirk combine for ~100 games in the DH spot. In which case perhaps you're better going with Lukes/Katoh as the other bench guys.

My big fear in all this is that Montoyo will DH Tapia once a week because lefty.

This will at least be palatable if Tapia plays in the field and we DH Gurriel/Teoscar a bit more.

The Jays would never have been able to keep Reese. No way he would have cleared waivers. Collins will. Not sure why people think the Jays will keep him.

They will spend an available roster spot on a pitcher. They ALWAYS spend the extra spot on a pitcher. And this time they actually need it.
To Toronto-
Jose ramirez

To Cleveland-
Kirk
Biggio
Pearson
Groshans

Is it a lot, absolutely, but a player of Ramirez pedigree, not too mention the absolute amazing fit he would be on this team, makes this trade acceptable.
Not even close. If 3 prospects and a reliever can grab Chapman, then it shouldn't take 3 MLB'ers with mid to high upside to grab Ramirez. Groshans, sure, but not MLB'ers. Kirk alone potentially provides more value than JRam, and JRam will walk anyway in a couple years.

I mean, yeesh. 3 MLB'ers with long term make-up. This is worse than what the Leafs did all those years when they sent picks away for all those playoffs rentals.

And for crying out loud, stop trying to weaken the pitching. Elite offense mattered for jack squat last year. ONE less blown game in May...and the Jays make the playoffs, so let's deal away what might become the best closer in baseball.

You do realize that keeping McGuire would still have allowed a 10 man pen for April?

Surprised but not disappointed with the Bird release after the Collins trade. I still doubt Collins is on the ML roster, it would make zero sense as McGuire is more useful to the Jays right now than Collins.

I think this hopefully means the Jays are comfortable with the idea of using Kirk at DH and Jansen at C in the same game, and not worrying about the minor risk of losing the DH for one whopping game if Jansen happens to get hurt. If that's the case I like that line of thinking as I have never agreed with the baseball aversion to taking this "risk" of losing the DH for one game. I mean most teams don't have catchers who hit well enough to consider DHing them, but if you do then it seems like a pretty tiny risk to take.

I also think this makes an 11 man pen to start the season even more likely. They can sort out the final bench spot when they need to cut 3 pitchers at the beginning of May. I think Katoh will get the open 40 man spot to start the season.

Absolutely shocked Bird isn't making the team. Not sure what more they could have expected of him. I guess he never had a chance to make the team regardless then. I assume Collins is on the team then. I'm struggling to find other options. The only thing I can think of is an 11 man pen and Lukes taking the 3rd bench spot however with Pearson's illness and Borucki's injury making him questionable I can't find 11 pen arms now either with Castro optioned. I guess they like Collins as a backup 1st baseman and emergency backup C that never starts at catcher but is available off the bench so Kirk can DH. Essentially taking McGuire's entire role(to exist as a catcher so Kirk can DH), but also have enough of a bat you're happy with him as a backup 1st baseman. The positional flexibility of him and others would allow you to be very comfortable with just a 3 man bench, but they have to go to a 4 man bench by May 2nd anyway.

Usually these opt out clauses are by a certain date. The team has to put them on the 40 man by a certain day or the player can opt out. So the Jays likely made the decision not to roster Bird first, rather than Bird choosing to leave before the Jays had a chance to keep him. The Jays put Phelps on the 40 very early but he signed his minor league contract before the lockout so his opt out date was likely made just before the regular season was supposed to originally start.
