If he was vaccinated he would be the perfect fit. But he's not so a player that could only play in less than half our games with the current rules in Canada and New York is pretty useless to us.
maybe not so perfect. apparently he turned down 120 million last year. not looking like hes getting close to that but he might have a crazy ask

Move over Bobby Bonilla, someone else needs a seat at the table.

In other news, because it now looks like the Jays will have a Spring game on TV almost every single day between now and April 4 I'm going to open a Spring Training Edition GDT because these games seem to be generating a significant amount more traffic. Expect that up later tonight.

Good little thread

I'm hoping for 15 starts this year with an era under 4. He probably has to start in AAA though or wait for an injury unless his spring training is ridiculous... but even then we would have to go 6 starters which seems unlikely...Have to think the other 5 guys in the rotation are a lock if their healthy.

I read that earlier before I posted and figured the guy overplayed his hand, which he has. He'll be lucky to get a long-term deal at this point. Refusing the vaccine takes us and a bunch of other teams out of the running. Stupid hill to die on.

Bird seems to be making a strong play for a roster spot.

The weird thing about him is that he's actually been better against lefties in his career.

If he makes it,
I'd roll:

Springer 8
Bichette 6
Vladito 3
Teo 9
Chapman 5
Bird 1
Gurriel Jr 7
Jansen 2
Biggio/Espinal 4

(This is both assuming that Bird makes it and we don't sign/trade for a bat before the season begins).

For Pearson, in the first month of the season, we have only 2 off days.

I think a smart plan would be to use a 6 man rotation to start the year. Given that Ryu is likely behind (or maybe not since this is the first offseason of his entire career where he did some training), we could either give him a start off early (and have him throw a simulated game instead) or we could just go straight 6 for a couple of weeks.

As much as you would never want to do this later in the year, I'm not sure it's a huge worry when guys can only go 75 pitches or so.

Edit: If we could somehow keep Stripling stretched out short term, that would help for when 75 hits in the 3rd or 4th. Also, I think the 6 man would be a play-by-ear (where multiple guys not making it 5 would mean that we would use both Stripling and Pearson as essentially 2nd starters)

The only thing about that is that Randal had a terrible June, May was successful despite a terrible approach and his Aug-Oct was unsuccessful despite a much better approach at the plate.

He needs to trust the good approach even when it is not working (because BABIP tends to even out over time).

I have a really hard time seeing Bird as a better DH option than Kirk. I'm hoping Kirk gets something like 2 of 5 behind the plate, 2 at DH, 1 on the bench. Combined with a little shuffling guys through the DH spot, that wouldn't leave a whole lot of playing time, but as a lefty with maybe a bit of untapped potential left, you could do worse than starting him on the roster and seeing if he can figure it out.

The reason I have him DHing over Kirk is because Atkins said earlier this spring that he doesn't want to break camp with 3 C in a perfect world.

I kind of get that, but then you're either starting a clearly MLB-ready hitter in AAA or just using him as a backup catcher. I think he's too good for either of those roles, and I think they're both worse for his development and make the team worse. The catcher situation is obviously a weird and complicated one, though.

That's fine, DFA McGuire... There is no world where Kirk should be in the minors in a contending year.

Send them Grichuk for a bp pitcher and then sign someone like Pillar for a fraction of the price to be a 4th OF?

That would be awesome. A top defensive CF would probably make more sense for them since they just signed a DH to play a corner OF spot, but the Marlins frequently don't care what makes sense.

A great chance for the Marlins to show that they are in fact willing to waste some money.

Would also go along with their MO of going for smaller, safer deals rather than dishing out the real big deals (that Jeter wanted).
