Considering Murray is always talking about a big body, you have to think if ANA get knocked out vs. LA tonight, we would absolutely be targeting Smith-Pelly with regards to Spezza.

I think the Stewart trade undermines the Spezza trade. If we trade Spezza, that signals a retool or a rebuild, while Stewart costs futures.

Neither did letting Alfie go but then using assets to trade for 2 years of Bobby Ryan. You can't think of the Sens like a traditional team (at least how fans view teams).

Sens aren't really going hard in one direction. They have shown no willingness to ditch all the vets (ie: keeping Alfie, Spezza etc. when they dealt Fisher and Kelly a few years ago) or "go for it" by spending a lot of money or trading a lot of youngsters.

The Sens are aiming to compete to the best of their ability on a strict budget. It's not a rebuilding team or a contending team, it's a perpetual re-tool for competitiveness. Sens management will juggle assets to put the best team they can out on the ice within the budget.

The way I see it too. They decided to keep the wrong vets. Unless the team decides to go in one direction, I see Bobby Ryan walking out or traded just like the Spezza situation

How much for Matt Read him and Turris have pretty solid chemistry

MacArthur Turris Read
Ryan Schenn Lazar
Pumepel Zibanejad Stone

Spezza + Cowen for Schenn and Read

You would be fired so fast for that trade there would still be time to hang up on the league offices before the trade is executed.

Interesting hypothesis; Imagine had they opted to trade Alfie, Philips and Spezza instead of Fisher, Kelly and Kovalev.

We would have likely droped more in the standings that year, so a good chance at Landeskog or RNH instead of Zibanejad, and more valuable assets likely coming back in the trade.

Spezza + ?

For

Couturier + read + morin

Is a trade I've pondered, but philly doesn't need spezza, so I don't think there's a fit

If you told me 3 years ago that Spezza would be in this situation I would have just traded Spezza back then his value was probably higher then and probably keep Kelly and even Vermette. Fisher i dont mind being traded. Definitely want Philipps gone and your right Id love Landeskog on this team

Flyers fans will not even trade Coutorier for Spezza straight up, they love Coutorie plus like you said, no need for Spezza there. Matt Read we have a chance to trade for, probably methot or something but that leaves a hole in our defense

Cmon, the obvious choice is the Islanders to create a full circle.

Spezza to NYI for Calvin de Haan & Ryan Strome. Then we can hear the armchair GM`s equate the trade to Yashin for Strome and deHaan and then bash Murray for the return.

I'd be doing flips if they did that deal. Strome is the best forward I've seen offered and de Haan the best D. I'd rather him over Shattenkirk.

Can we somehow make this work

Ryan - Spezza - Hemsky
MacArthur - Turris - Read

If you had a guy consistently topping 20 goals and 40 points and playing a solid 3-zone game on a 3.5mil contract, what would you deal him for? I'd say his value is somewhere between MacArthur and Ryan. It'd probably take a 1st + or Wiercioch + 2nd and maybe even a prospect tossed in there. And that's just talking value... last thing I see the Flyers doing is dealing Read for a bottom pairing D.

he's being moved because the team doesn't want him at the price it's going to cost to keep him long-term.

where is your source on this?

what we know is that spezza has said he will look favourably on a deal out of ottwaa

There is no source, it's his assumption like anyone else. Just worded differently

And I would agree with OttawaSenators11

We don't really need a source

Spezza is likely to command a considerate amount of money since his numbers are very, very good

We're broke and have an upcoming UFA crunch in 2015

Keeping Spezza and Ryan is likely to be pretty damn difficult

He didn't say anything about Spezza requesting a trade, he said that the team is afraid to commit long-term

It makes a lot sense considering what we know about the team's inability to spend: it doens't mean we can't afford him and the other UFAs we want to keep but clearly management needs to think long-term here due to the budget

Most guys are off the rush scorers I don't see how that is a downfall

Stewart is an offensive weapon I don't think we need him to play every facet of the game perfectly. He is a better option than hemsky or havlat who also aren't two way but Atleast Stewart is younger has a better shot selection and plays well infront of the net. Something a lot of our players don't do. No more neil infront of the net

He can park his ass infront of the goalie and get dirty goals as well as the snipes.
Other thing I like about him is that he sticks up for his team mates and he is a good fighter. Ease pressure off Neil without having to dress an enforcer like Kassian.

Your right, he can be good infront of the net and he is a good fighter, but is that what you want for 4 million dollars (UFA to be)? Not to mention the assets you'd lose to get him.

When the puck is on his stick in the offensive zone he either shoots or makes a bad play and the team loses possession. He's got a terrible IQ and he's terrible along the boards. I want a guy in my top 6 to be able to do more then just stand infront of the net or wait for the puck to come to him.

My interpretation is that it's an amicable split, and that if Spezza wanted to stay here long term, Murray would make it happen.

I have a hard time thinking he's THAT bad if Murray is looking at getting him

Some of the Blues fans other Ottawa fans have been arguing with over on the trade board said that Stewart and Berglund played well together prior to Hitchcock coming over

I'm not sold on Stewart: the fact that he's going to be a UFA in 2015 at the same time as other important players is my biggest concern

I'm in agreement with Murray that we certainly could use size and more importantly toughness in our top 6 (much more so than in our bottom 6) and if he's the only one available we should look at getting him as long as it doesn't cost an arm and a leg

for 4 million dollars a player like him is perfectly fine :s

he doesnt have stone hands like Neil. A player who stands infront of the net and has good hands is very valuable in my mind

this is all baseless unless you know melynk personally we dont know what the budget is. The budget could be increasing .

Actually murray has stated countless times how a player like spezza is very valuable.

But okay you guys can make up facts as you like

First of all we know the budget isn't increasing: after the news of the biggest TV deal in franchise history was signed the team President was asked if it would increase our roster budget and he said yes only to have Melnyk say that it wouldn't a few hours after.

So no, the budget isn't increasing next year and considering the TV deal added something like 40 million dollars (I think a bit less since the deal is 400 over 12 years I believe) to the team's budget and it won't do anything I wouldn't expect any increase in the short term (2-3 years) unless we make the playoffs next year and get to the second round to have a bunch of home games

The point isn't that Spezza isn't valuable, the point is that we're cash-strapped and have important players that will be needing new deals in 2015 in him, Ryan, MacArthur and Methot (probably other ones I can't think of) as of now: tough decisions need to be made to make sure we don't lose all our talent and the average of the team age needs to be considered, we're one of the youngest teams so once the current core hits it's prime Spezza most likely won't be the game breaker he is today

Spezza might simply not fit in the team's long-term plans at which point offering a long-term deal is just not a good idea, especially if you can trade him for a lot of assets which is what he's worth
