I was looking through Chatwoods numbers and noticed he significantly altered his four-seam and cutter usage in 2020 compared to 2019.

2019: 10.2% CT, 31.7% 4SFB
2020: 30% CT, 7.5% 4SFB

When you factor in that, historically, his four-seam fastball is likely his worst pitch and his cutter is his best, that’s certainly intriguing. I could see him relying heavily on his cutter and curveballs in short relief stints a la Wade Davis and having plenty of success.

Chatwood may not be the name that we are all desiring but he's sneaky intriguing imo. In a small 18.1 inning sample in 2020, he posted a 5.30 ERA with 25 strikeouts against 9 walks. The 4.34 BB/9 mark was high and contributed greatly to an elevated 1.66 WHIP, but his strikeout rate surged to a really strong 12.05/9 mark, and he supporting it with an above-average 12.3% swinging-strike rate that could help justify his solid ERA estimator results including a 3.35 FIP and 4.06 SIERA. The reason for the strikeout gains is likely a pitch mix decision, throwing his cutter 30% of the time (up from 10.2% in 2019) and his fastball less. The cutter produced a very impressive 19.2% swinging-strike rate and allowed just a .217/.269/.391 batting line against opponents which was good for an 81 wRC+. His curveball and changeup also miss bats at an above-average rate (15.9% and 11.8% swinging-strike rates in 2020 respectively) and with a more normalized BABIP (particularly against the curveball in which hitters posted a ridiculous .667 BABIP that led to a .333 batting average against instead of a .144 expected batting average against), then I think he has the secondary weapons to thrive as a mid-rotation starter.

To me, the key to unlocking Chatwood needs to figure out a solution for his fastball. Both his two-seam (sinker) and four-seamers have gotten smashed in his career (career .293/.386/.442 batting line against his sinker and .273/.408/.425 mark for his four-seamer) and he needs to figure this out. They both feature plenty of velocity in the 94-95 range for velocity, and both are also elite spin wise ranking in the mid-90's percentile wise. So why hasn't it played well in the majors?

Personally, I'm not a big fan of sinkers in the current MLB as without proper location, they become food for launch angle revolution hitters who mash at the bottom of the zone. Also throwing at the bottom of the zone with his sinker creates some slight issues for his breaking/off-speed stuff as he's not changing eye levels. I would ask him to throw his four-seam more frequently at the top of the zone and above it which would allow his cutter and high spin curveball to play well at the bottom. Even as more of a change of pace offering to set up his other stuff, I think it would really benefit him. His two-seamer can still be useful to generate groundball contact (has posted elite 50%+ groundball rates in 4 of last 5 years), and I think it works decently well with his cutter but I think he needs to cut some of it's usage back.

To me, he's a low-cost flier who already has some intriuging peripherals, who could be an adjustment away from being a sneaky #3 starter.

Mets president Sandy Alderson told ESPN: “I have spoken directly with Jared Porter regarding events that took place in 2016 of which we were made aware tonight for the first time. Jared has acknowledged to me his serious error in judgment, has taken responsibility for his conduct, has expressed remorse and has previously apologized for his actions. The Mets take these matters seriously, expect professional and ethical behavior from all of our employees, and certainly do not condone the conduct described in your story. We will follow up as we review the facts regarding this serious issue.”

This guy is sooo fired.

Because the pictures were unsolicited. They weren’t a couple. She was not responding to his texts at all so clearly she wasn’t interested in him.
Ok didn’t read it all. Thought it was back and forth. I thought she was sending shit and he sent a dick pic. Big deal. But if she wasn’t into it then nevermind.

It definitely wasn’t a mutual thing. Porter sent her 60+ unanswered messages including numerous photos, which ultimately resulted in the unsolicited picture. After reading the article, I can’t see how Porter is the GM of the team going forward, especially given the Mets were preaching a culture change and Porters behaviour was predatory and unhinged - not the type of person you want as a leader in your organization. Also, just imagine the message it would sent if they retained Porter after the long overdue hiring of Kim Ng by the Marlins.

The 60+ unanswered messages is bad enough. Certainly not fireable but definitely weird and pathetic behaviour. Then add in a photo of his bulge then a dick pic and there’s strong evidence of stalking and obviously harassment.

That’s not strong evidence of any criminal offence. Depends on what the “victim” states. For harassment to be considered, the victim needs to have a legitimate fear of the offender and also needs to let that person know that what they are doing is harassing them. Just being silent is not enough for a charge to be approved. The offender would not be charged as he would not have known that what he was doing was harassing the victim. At least that’s how it works here in Canada. As for stalking, not a chance either. Stalking needs to be that guy finding out where she lives and being outside her house or following her to work or home etc. None of what I have now read would be a criminal charge in Canada. Doesn’t look like he was charged anyways unless I’m missing something. Just unprofessional and inappropriate. I mean the guy should have got a hint when she wasn’t responding with heart emojis or reciprocating the behaviour but I guess he had quite the crush on her. Yikes.

I'm still doubting he gets fired though. Certainly going to make a very uncomfortable interview for any Mets female reporters that's for sure!

Didn't realize that there was a literal incel GMing the Mets. Dear God almighty, the article is just painful to read. From the "I'm a nice guy" (no, you're not), to the dick pics, to the claims that they were stock photos (why would there exist stock photos of a dick?). That guy has something very wrong with him and needs serious help.

Seriously, I'm the furthest thing ever from a ladies' man, but I even feel uncomfortable sending more than 2-3 unanswered texts to just buddies and friends of mine. I wonder what has to go through your head to send 60 texts to somebody.

Another bullpen reclamation project. It’s worked out roughly half the time under Shatkins so I don’t mind.
I mean he’s a year removed from an absolutely elite season. Career K/9 of almost 13. He’s not exactly trying to recreate magic from 4-5 years ago. Could be a filthy late inning reliever.

All fair points but he’s also 33 and coming back from injury. Not the easiest thing to do as you get older.

From 2018-2019 Kirby Yates was atop the list of reliever fWAR in the entire league. While this front office has had plenty of success signing relievers for bargain deals (and often getting assets for them), this is significantly different from bringing in someone like John Axford or Daniel Hudson.
