Bautista: "I want 5 years, 150 million"

Jays "Done and welcome back"

EE: "I want 5 years, 150 million"

Jays "Done and welcome back"

Fowler "I want 6 years, 120 million"

Jays "Done and welcome"

Price "I want 7 years 210 million"

"Done and welcome back"

Bichette "I want..."

Jays "We can't afford to retain any of our young players into their free agent years because we've spent 110 million on 4 bottom of the roster players sorry"

Springer "I..."

Jays "If you're a free agent and want more than 2 million don't even bother calling, we can't afford it anymore"

Fans "Why are you capping your budget at 180 million Rogers, you can afford 300 million so sign Springer, Bauer, Realmuto, and LaMahieu too"

The premise makes sense. Obviously, you can't frivolously overspend on every "toy" you see. But sometimes you just need to bite the bullet and go that little extra step to secure a guy you want. Whether it be extra term, money, or both. Especially for the Jays who are the lone team in a foreign country and the desire to play in Toronto is very suppressed.

That's one thing that drove me nuts above Beeston -- his 5-year rule. You have top of the line talent available for only money, and you are automatically excluding yourself from that player's services because of some arbitrary internal rule. Give that 6th or 7th year...structure the contract where it's front-loaded...or backload it when other contracts would be coming off the books. Something. Get creative. These aren't stupid people.

Whether Toronto has a chance at any of these top free agents wanting to come here is one thing. If they are unwilling to be that extra bit aggressive to get a guy they really want when the interest is mutual, then dammit, it's time to stop being extra cautious and conservative and just do it.

I’m betting the jays walk out with Springer and Bauer
And Walker

1. Springer signs to a slight overpay with term.
2. Bauer takes notice and signs within a week of Springer on a deal that's less than 3 years.
3. Walker jumps on board as well, he's already indicated he loved Toronto.

A lot of bad takes in this thread. Not surprisingly obviously. The love for a soon to be 33 year old infielder who ppl wanted to give like 25m into his 37th year is kinda funny

He was not a league average player until he was 30, I know you all don't like Zeke's arguing style but let's all try to be in good faith here.

LeMahieu started winning gold gloves at 25 and started making all star games at 26. He's one of the best hitters in baseball and the Jays would have zero issue getting a ton of value out of him if they upped the Yankees offer.

Zeke isn't totally incorrect here people, I just think the anger should be pointed at Rogers instead of the figureheads they put in place. The Jays beat the Yankees in attendance in 2016(2015? Maybe) and broke Canadian viewership records with Game 5 against the Rangers, yet they stripped the team down (somewhat justifiably) and hired a small market president and GM to take us through a rebuild that shouldn't have been as long as it was. Frankly, I have no idea whether it's Rogers keeping them in line or from the beginning Shapiro got the job on a promise that he could penny pinch in most spots and still build a championship level team.

I won't be too upset unless we miss out on Springer, that's where I'm drawing the line. Im just requesting as a thread we stop acting like getting the best 2 hole hitter we've had since Alomar wouldn't have been worth like 5/90? We're a big market team that can afford to take on big risks like that, whether Rogers wants you to believe that or not.

Ya those years in his 20s with his 66 WRC+. Superstar ...

People complaining about a old ass infielder when we have stud kids is hysterical.

djlms wrc+

44,81,67,66,130 (finally good. Prolly roided),94,87

joins Yankees

136, 177

Ya nothing fishy about that. Except he’s a bum before he joined New York. That’s why he got a 15aav cause Cashman knows how to GM

Lol Sid telling Bauer to get the highest AAV ever somewhere else. He’ll be the first one crying when the jays don’t sign him.

I don’t watch Tim and sid for this reason but it’s just on

Only time I’ve enjoyed Sid was when he did Dangles podcast because he seemed genuine. His schtick is too much

Well it seems like the balls are starting to move. It’ll be interesting to see where we land.

Seeing as the Jays don't like going after players who weren't good until they turned 30, you have to assume that Bauer is off the table.

Although looks like we're shaping up to win the GS sweepstakes by process of elimination, so im pretty stoked about that.

I assume you're joking about our previous discussion about LeMahieu, but I'm really, really unsure about giving Bauer a huge contract. His track-record is all over the place and people talk about him like a proven Ace. Massive upside, obviously, but there's a ton of risk there.

As far as the top free agents go, Springer and Realmuto are definitely the two surest things.

IThere's a bit of comedic timing in that post yeah but I've always been hesitant to give Bauer a contract. Not only because he's been inconsistent but also because it likely means we're out on GS. I'd much rather Springer + Tanaka/Odorizzi instead of Bauer + JBJ. JBJ's inflated BABIP last year makes him a very unattractive option imo. Springer + a secondary SP gives a higher chance of hitting on our risks.

No such thing as a bad one year deal but more than I expected. Still a great gamble to take.

Agreed. I'm not completely against being the team to take that risk on Bauer, but it's definitely not my preference.

Yeah I would've upped the offer on that for Kluber but now it looks like Tanaka isn't going back to New York.

I'm praying those Tanaka to Japan rumours aren't true. Give him 3-4 years on the hopes that you're getting 2 good years out of him before your SP prospects are ready.

Man Kleuber did not take long to get the deal done. That’s what the Lemahieu deal did. Allowed this deal to keep them under the luxury tax. Also likely means Tamaka is done as a yankee
