Bauer doesnt have the track record to be demanding record setting money. He may be able to find someone willing to go 2-3 years at that figure but not 5 or 6 years. Nobody is looking to spend right now.

With the amount of money their printing and upcoming inflation, 200 million over 6 will be fine, I'd gladly do 175 over 5 or 200 over 6. 200 over 5 if that's what he wants is pretty high but I would do 175 over 5

Keep in mind the cost to acquire 1 WAR in free agency for 2020 was 9 million per year according to fangraphs. With the rate of M2 monetary expansion with stimulus and quantitative easing, inflation is already hitting and will be significantly higher then prior years so locking in players now is a good idea if they think they will return to normal revenue's post covid.

Other factors

1) Pitching supply in FA is low this year
2) We don't have to give up any top prospects
3) The Toronto/Buffalo factor is a real issue, we'll probably have to overpay by at least a little bit.
4) 5 year deal > 9 or 10 year deal.

Bauer has netted 11.6 FWAR over his last 3 seasons which included a shortened season. He's been getting better with age. He seems like a pretty good bet to reach and pass the 3.5-4 WAR mark each year

200 over 5 is a bit rich but 165-175 over 5 seems fine to me based on way higher then normal inflation, the Toronto/Buffalo factor and low supply of pitchers in FA

I would put Bauer somewhere between Wheeler and Cole last year. So maybe something like 5 years, $150-160 million. I have concerns about his track record and consistency (he was a good pitcher until 2018, when he pitched like an ace, then was just good again in 2019, then an ace again in the shortened 2020 season) and whether he will continue doing whatever he was doing to the ball in 2020 going forward. If it was just a one year "prove my point" thing (that conveniently coincided with him reaching free agency) then I want nothing to do with him at that money since he'll likely regress significantly.

Shi Davidi joined Good Show to discuss whether or not the Toronto Blue Jays would circle back to Matt Shoemaker or Taijuan Walker if bigger free agent signings or trade options don't pan out.

I'd think he'd continue using it, but to be frank, this is the same guy that harasses college students for fun. He's basically the definition of some 4chan /pol/ neckbeard in an MLB pitcher's body. His pettiness and assholishness knows zero bounds, and he's completely erratic and unpredictable. On a long term deal, it's just too much of a risk to take. If people hated Stroman for being a toxic personality/Twitter guy, they're going to hate Bauer's guts the instant he has a bad start.

I was all for getting him when he was beating the "1 year deals only" drum, but never a long term deal. I'd still focus more on JT or Springer.

Saying that Bauer harasses college students for fun because he got into a twitter argument with a girl who cast the first stone is misleading to say the very least. Bauer is a decent human, people just don't like it when athletes step outside of their lane and are outspoken.

Blue Jays 2021 predictions: Vladimir Guerrero Jr., offseason splashes, more
  1. The Blue Jays miss out on George Springer (Mets)
  2. But the Blue Jays will still make a splash this offseason (Realmuto, Bauer, LeMahieu, and Bryant mentioned)
  3. The Blue Jays dip into the international market (Sugano)
  4. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will arrive for spring training in the best shape of his life
  5. The Blue Jays won’t begin the season in Toronto, but will end it here

Lol no thanks, if that's the case, I'd much rather get Springer, Realmuto and Tanaka/Paxton and trade Jansen for pitching

There's almost zero chance not getting Bauer means every other team in the league decides to do the Jays a solid and let them grab whoever they want

I think the obvious intent behind that post is "I would rather spend what it takes to sign some of those guys than spend $36-40 million per year on Bauer."

(But... yeah, there's basically no chance the Jays get Springer AND Realmuto AND Tanaka/Paxton.)
