Philly isnt spending they are cutting. And the Jays cannot even be put up against the Tigers. If Realmuto wants to win he will sign in Toronto as long as $$$ are close or better
Right, I'm just so curious to see who's going to come out as the front runners. Yankees tendered Sanchez but they could still easily make him the backup, Nationals have been quiet but they're still on the board, Angels or Rangers been up to anything recently?

The Realmuto sweepstakes have just been so weirdly quiet.

The assumption seems to be the Mets are in on everyone until they aren't. So if they are signing McCann and are out on Realmuto then it seems to be wide open.

I think the Angels will spend, but they are desperate for pitching and wouldn't shock me if they throw out $150+ million at Bauer. And if they do, I imagine that takes them out of the sweepstakes of the rest of the big name guys. Otherwise, may they try to sign 2 of Tanaka, Paxton, Walker, etc. and roll the dice on an impact position player.

Works in the Jays favor. Yankees dont want to spend, Philly doesnt want to spend, Red Sox cannot spend. Only team are the Angels and White Sox that are willing to.

Even including them, the Angels aren't going to spend another 100M+ on a position player with their pitching as it is, and the White Sox already have Grandal for another three years. There just isn't a really obvious suitor for Realmuto, the Nationals are probably the closest if they are willing to spend.

I gotta think Springer, Realmuto, and LeMahieu are our free agent priorities. Both play up the middle and would turn their incumbents into valuable trade chips.

I don't hear any action on Bauer so I'm thinking if the Jays go after a top arm it'll be through trade, while adding a lower tier arm like Odorizzi/Paxton/Kluber/Sugano.

Personally, I think LeMahieu and Springer are the Jays top priorities, just because of the amount of speculation about those two and the Jays, and because of their easy fit into the lineup. This is just me speculating, but I think Realmuto is sort of their backup plan for an impact bat, if Springer and LeMahieu goes elsewhere.

The Mets going Bauer + McCann would be put us in such a good spot. Cmon Alderson argue your point hard, you can do it buddy.

Maybe that is why Realmuto's suitors are dwindling. Asking for 7-8 in hopes he gets 6 but likely ends up at 5.

f*** I hate the Mets or any entitled NY based sports team.

I don't hate em. They've always been second fiddles I'm that city. Toronto is always going to have some troubles getting players and that's okay. We foot good players in the farm and I still think we get one of the premier FAs when all is said and done.

I would never say no to Bauer. McCann was a nice surprise for us, but the expectation always was there that ny was taking one of the top 3.

2 of the 3 with NYM throwing money around would be a sick joke.

If Springer gets 5+ years then im not sad. I wouldnt have signed him for more than 4 years.

Bauer would have been my number 1 target but it doesnt appear we were hot after him so i was prepared not to get him.

All the top guys were going to get top dollar and pick where they want to go. Many players dont want to come to Canada and now we dont have a home stadium. Hard not to fault them.

Also thought we would land second tier free agents (Wong, Kim, Bradley etc.) and a top tier player (Lindor, Bryant, Darvish) via trade. That is still in play. Wonder if David Price would be available. AL East tested and owed 16M this season and 16M next. Solid player 2 trade for on a 2 year deal.

Looking at his tweets, he thinks we need to give up Gurriel, Groshans, Woods-Richardson, Borucki, Adams and Murray for Lindor and Plesac.

I am not sure what is worse, that tweet or the comments...

Mason McCrae was like "The Jays need to do this now".

He had some nice draft coverage, but since then he's been a colossal turd.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of Realmuto with the assumption we trade Jansen for a haul. We're not just talking about a good catcher, we're talking about the clear best catcher in baseball the last three years (with only Grandal remotely close)

I'm higher on Jansen than basically anyone, but grabbing Realmuto would be a gigantic improvement over arguably the most important position. We just need to be ready to watch Jano breakout somewhere else unfortunately.

I struggle with it because I like Jansen so much, and despite his struggles, his first couple years offensively look a whole lot like... JT Realmuto's.

One thing that is interesting with the Buffalo scenario is that it we do play there the players pay New York State taxes and not Canadian ones if they aren’t living in Canada. I know they pay where they play so this might actually help with some short term deals

I'd be far more comfortable giving Springer the money he wants for 5/6 years than doing the same for Bauer. Bauer has 1 full season with an ERA below 4 and is only a year younger than Springer. This forum has quibbled quite a bit about how Springer would regress over a long contract yet I haven't seen much talk about how Bauer will be starting next season on the wrong side of 30. I know the regression for pitchers and outfielders is different but Springer's underlyings still suggest he'll likely be a productive bat throughout the entirety of his contract.

Exactly why I've been against it for so long too, but we're not just talking about a better catcher than Jansen, we're talking about the best catcher in the league. In the last three years of catchers that have at least 700 PA (25) he ranks:

fWAR - 1st (3rd place has less than half his WAR)
wRC+ - 3rd (only behind Grandal & Garver)
BsR - 1st (nobody else is even positive, and he's +12.2.... which is 14th best in the league)
def - 4th (only behind Hedges, Grandal, and Vazquez... 6th in the entire league)

Like best case scenario with Jansen.... is Realmuto. I see it potentially happening, but we're talking about getting Realmuto for the next ~5 seasons and it's not like elite catchers have fallen off a cliff like many think.

EDIT: If the rumoured ask is correct, easy easy pass. 33.3M/year is insane.

Another comment said it was a massive steal for the Jays and should throw in Manoah to seal the deal, LOL.
