GMs are not allowed to talk to individual players during the lockout. Are GMs allowed to talk to each other about trades? If yes then I would predict a trade would be our first move after the lockout.

The only reason that a signing is even being mentioned is because there is a lot of buzz that we might actually have terms with a player who couldn't beat the deadline because we couldn't do the physical.

You would think that a sport that nearly killed itself in 1994 with a labour stoppage would know better than to let this drag out too far, and in particular if it actually leads to losing games in 2022. So much so that they'd alienate those remaining fans who are still pissed off 27 years later, lose a newer generation and fanbase that aren't taking to the game and beauty of baseball as generations past (a sport that is the complete opposite of instant gratification this generation seeks), not to mention still in the midst of a pandemic where many people's jobs and livelihoods have been affected that disposable income just isn't there like it used to be for tickets, merchandise, TV packages, etc.

Wake up, MLB. But then again, they're also run by a meathead commissioner in Manfred, who alone may put the nail in the league's coffin once and for all.

Meh. Don't care about labour talks. As one guy put it on tv, it's millionaires saying they want more money, and billionaires replying they don't have enough.

Jays tend to kick the tires on everyone but often end up settling, so predicting what they will do in the offseason tends to feel like a crapshoot. Pretty safe bet though that they will do their usual bargain hunting on relievers, and it's darn likely Kirk will be dealt to grab a starter or a 3B or 2B. It's looking more and more likely Moreno will be up with the Jays next season especially if Jansen continues to disappoint, so if the Marlins are unwilling to deal Rogers, then maybe it will be possible to grab that other guy with McGuire and save Kirk for a big deal elsewhere.

And whatever happened to Oscar Colas? That would be a nice get.

I don't see how a declining outfielder who hits lighter than Jansen and would be playing on turf complements anyone.

1.5 WAR in 200 PA. Jansens a bum

"I've heard that Freddie Freeman was the one who approached the Jays in regards to being interested in playing in Toronto, it's not much of a rumor, it's hearsay, the guy who's reporting it has been right on a few things, sort of out of the blue."

Over the last three years, Bradley has a 75 wRC+ against righties. Grichuk isn't as good a fit, but having the platoon advantage is only helpful if the batter isn't complete garbage in that platoon. I'll take the worse fit in this case.

Not to mention Bradley's 2023 option comes with an $8 million buyout, so they save a couple million there at best.

JBJ doesn’t have an opt out according BRef. Just 1 more year at $11M in 2022 and he is a free agent in 2023.

I worded it weirdly, but I was more after Bradley’s elite CF, something none of our current OFs have.

Edit: Ive been corrected, i see the mutual option for 2023, so i likely wouldnt make this deal then.

He plays near elite CF and has a lefty bat. Neither of our current OFs have that. And most importantly, a straight swap means the Jays get out of Grichuk’s 2023 salary of $10M.

Short of dumping Grichuk for nothing, this trade may have been the next best thing.

JBJ has a mutual option for 2023
Brewers announce signing of CF Bradley Jr.

BR went off the MLB.com report that he was signing which did not include the option. The buyout on 2023 is 8M and the salary is 12M.

So if they get Freeman, that makes Vladdy a permanent DH? I don't get it. Or do they want to move him back to 3rd? lol, that would be a head scratcher. Are the Jays actually interested in Freeman?

Everything Vladdy has ever said is that he wants to play 3rd. If Freeman was willing to come, Vlad playing 1st won't block it. We played Vlad at first this year because we trusted Biggio at 3rd (based on limited viewings) and then chose not to move him mid-season to not mess Vlad up.

I just thought that the plan was to stay with Vlad at 1st and never change him back. That's the impression I was getting. But if they can land Freddie and move Vlad back to 3rd after all, I'll be all for it. It would be fantastic.

IMO, that is the only universe that it happens in. Vladdy is a GG calibre 1B. Why risk him playing 3rd, when he's excellent where he is.

Three roadmaps for addressing Blue Jays' remaining off-season needs

I will go on record and say that I love option 3. And if the payroll ceiling was a little higher, we could upgrade Pineda to a Kikuchi.
Gimme option A, replacing Semien's bat and a healthy Duffy + Pete Walker gives us good odds at a solid #5 arm. Doolittle isn't ideal but I still trust them enough to find bullpen bargains. If Phelps, Yates, and Merryweather hadn't all stepped on spring training sprinklers within 20 minutes of eachother, the bullpen might have been just fine last year.

If Freeman wants to come to the Jays and is for some reason willing to take a pay cut, how in the hell do you say no to him? I know this FO loves it's positional and DH flexibility (as do all of us), but we're talking about adding one of the best bats (and he's left handed) in the entire league for no assets.

Worst case throw one of them into 3B for ~20 games and hope it doesn't cost you a game.

A & C work for me. But I'd prefer to go for different pitchers in a similar tier in A. C would be so fun getting Mondesi. If he could ever stay healthy, damn.

That's the thing. I think C is the most flexible option. Dramatically improving the pen would be huge. Mondesi has so much potential. The starter could be upgraded. Also keep in mind that he limited to 1 trade, but even 2 could realistically be made (it's just that if it is 2, we are likely not trading for anything too big on number 2, such as getting Mondesi and say trading Grichuk for a similar value OF who bats left or a similar balance-based tweak).

A rotating combination of Mondesi/Espinal/Biggio to fill 3B/2B (with the former two being able to fill in at SS as well) would be fun if it means more money to allocate to the rotation and pen.

Honestly, the biggest concern with Mondesi is that Montoyo will want to have him hit leadoff because speed.

im pretty sure i posted this before but its been rumoured the A's are asking for a kings ransom for chapman, given how we fleeced them last time i cant imagine they arent asking for the moon. while ramirez might cost more to get, he fits better on the team. his career OB, OPS and SLG% are all alot higher, he walks significantly more, strikes out way less(chapman had 202 strikouts this past year LOL) is a lefty bad which we would still need if we got chapman, and prob doesnt matter nearly as much but hes a young allstar latino infielder which i think would be fantastic for vladdy to learn from..

give me ramirez or give me death haha

wouldn't hurt to have vlad and him alternate dh/1b duties and allow vlad some reps and third when others need a day off in the field and you get to see if he still prefers playing 3rd or has ambition to try to.

but i agree it would be downright foolish not to atleast investigate the possibility's if everyone involved is interested.

If the price on Ramirez were close to reasonable, this would be a done deal. He's the best player in the game at a position of need.

I’m shocked Atlanta hasn’t resigned Freeman at this point. I thought he was going to be the first big name to sign but guess I was wrong

I’d love JRam on this team but he’s going to cost a ransom. Bryant isn’t going to cost assets just money which the Jays can afford. KB has to be option #1 right now

Jram is the superior player with what will be the better contract although just for two years. Hitting from the side of the plate we need most. He’s the way better fit and I’d prefer to give up assets to get him and hope we can retain him for the dollars we’d have to give up for Bryant. The price will be high but as long as it’s not the two big prospects it’s all good by me. Kirk, Gurriel, Groshans works for me.
