The Jays in nearby Dunedin can really hit. And their outfield, which formerly had one part-time center fielder, now has three who can do it. Their baserunning is also much improved, a consideration with those pizza-box bases.

The Jays made a contract suggestion for Alek Manoah this winter. Word is they were “not close.” …

He was our opening day starter. Don’t kid yourself. He was paid to be a top of the rotation starter not a 4th arm.

I'm just saying he's paid as our 3rd, and Manoah makes peanuts. Hopefully he bounces back into a 1/2, but a 4 would be a hell of an improvement on last year.

And by 2024 he’ll probably be further down the totem with Manoah/Gausman/Tiedemann in the fold. He’s getting paid because his body of work has shown mid rotation upside with workhorse durability.

Future does not dictate what the plan was at the time of his signing. They very much intended him to be a work horse yes but one that also puts up great numbers. He has not been that

First search on google re: funny injuries. Ohh here are a few doozies.

Sammy Sosa: Missed three weeks with a back injury after he sneezed violently. Brent Mayne: Checked for traffic before crossing the street, pulled a neck muscle. Adam Eaton: Accidentally stabbed himself while trying to open a DVD case with a steak knife. Mariano Rivera: Tied his shoes, threw out his back.

On a serious note - yoga needs to be mandatory for professional athletes.
Not mandatory but I’d highly recommend it.

This happens all the time with pitching though. Ryu barely lasted a season as a TOR pitcher despite getting a higher AAV contract than Berrios. The same year Ryu was starting to decline, they acquired Berrios. The offseason after that they signed Gausman to a higher AAV than Berrios. This past offseason they signed Bassitt to a higher AAV than Berrios. Manoah has also developed into a TOR pitcher, and right now no matter how much I like Manoah there’s almost zero incentive for the Jays to sign him to a longterm contract.

Berrios has been a durable starter throughout his career, but his stats were never indicative of a frontline starter. He was routinely around the 3.5-4.0 ERA, with a ~4.0 xERA. Obviously we shouldn’t expect him to continue to put up 2022 numbers, but expecting him to be a Gausman or Manoah level contributor is also kind of unreasonable.

You can do it Otto!
I wouldn’t mind it if he makes the team.

The batting lineup is stacked. The only concern I have is Schneider over using Varsho and Kiermaier vs lefties. If they want to use Varsho in CF vs lefties I’m fine with that because you will need to play one of KK or Varsho in CF and we may as well play the one with more upside who is in our long term plans vs lefties but hopefully not both. I would be happy with Merrifield/Lopez—Varsho-Springer vs lefties.

Because they didn't bring in the lefty-mashing OF we all wanted them to, I assumed Lopez was the front-runner for the 26th man spot coming into Spring Training. He's definitely the best fit. All the other candidates are either lefty bats (which doesn't help much since they mainly need to be able to spell Kiermaier/Varsho/Belt against lefties), younger/less experienced with higher ceilings (and more in need of regular reps in the minors), or don't have the versatility Lopez has (not the end of the world given the versatility of the rest of the roster, but still...)

Considering how he played in the WBC and in Spring Training games, he's definitely earned the spot. I wouldn't hate Lukes getting the spot either, but I don't see how he would get much playing time.

Thanks for "considering" us when Votto is at the end of his career playing worst baseball while we have Championship aspirations. Very thoughtful of you Krall, it’s not like you want to move some of his $25M salary this year or offload his $7M buyout next year.

All hail the benevolent General (Manager) Krall.

Its truly a VC special since nowhere in that tweet does it even say that Votto wants to play for the Jays.

He also grades out well enough defensively to handle CF. Wouldn’t be surprised if Whit and Otto both fill in the OF against tough lefties (and Whit has been taking reps in LF this spring). Varsho was a pretty pricey acquisition to only be platooning with but I don’t think he should be out there in those situations unless Springer is DHing or needs an off day. Jansen/Kirk will also likely DH to replace Belt against lefties.

Also not opposed to Capra as he has solid versatility (LF/INF) too.
