One of our players could be hurt carrying groceries up a flight of stairs, picking up a cracker his young child dropped on the floor, hurting himself on a steak knife (no less than 3 different ways), fixing a drone, sneezing, or panicking after waking up from a nightmare about spiders.

all of those are things that have actually happened to pro athletes.

Injuries are going to happen. Diaz could've hurt himself jumping up and down at a concert or celebrating something with family at a bbq.

Does it suck? Yeah. But the WBC is good for the game and the players that go enjoy it. It needs to better establish itself in the absence of proper baseball competition at the olympics but this tournament has been exciting and is a key potential way to maybe get people into the game that wouldn't otherwise be interested.

You never want to see a guy get hurt, but guys are going to get hurt as a matter of course unless you encase them in bubble wrap every time they step off the field.

Hell, guys get hurt in spring training all the time and that's just as meaningless as the WBC. Vladdy hurts his knee and misses the tournament and nobody cares. But if the injury had happened a week later in a game for DR people would've flipped tables over it. It's silly.
The problem I have with it is guys tend not to be game ready when this tournament happens. Like the olympics are in the middle of a season kind of thing. Not that it prevents injury but guys are just more ready for that kind of action. I'm mostly worried about pitchers.

I will add Stroman tripping on a sprinkler head in spring for us and destroying his leg

The pitchers generally have limitations placed on them that are not out of line with spring training expectations. What is it? 60 pitches in the prelim round and 80 in the early elimination rounds with rest requirements based on workload? Granted most pitchers use early spring starts to tinker and not really try to pitch to game-condition wins, but I'm not sure it's as big of a jump as it might seem to be going from spring workloads to a WBC workload for a week.

Maybe they should just open spring training a week early during WBC years so pitchers can gear up a little more ahead of the WBC and then maybe have a tiny bit of time off after it's done if they want it.

Saunders was the sprinkler head. Stroman was fielding a bunt during pitcher fielding practice.

I only mention this because I remember all the ridiculous "Why is he even practicing that???" complaints when it happened, presumably from a lot of the same people who complain about the Jays not being good enough at the "fundamentals" every year.

Shoutout Izturis tripping on the dugout steps, Cecil getting cut 2x (slicing chicken breasts, blender), and Martin passing out and hurting his knee after a sauna/shower combo

First search on google re: funny injuries. Ohh here are a few doozies.

Sammy Sosa: Missed three weeks with a back injury after he sneezed violently. Brent Mayne: Checked for traffic before crossing the street, pulled a neck muscle. Adam Eaton: Accidentally stabbed himself while trying to open a DVD case with a steak knife. Mariano Rivera: Tied his shoes, threw out his back.

On a serious note - yoga needs to be mandatory for professional athletes.

If options and other considerations weren't an issue and the Jays run an 8-man pen I'd love to start the season with

Romano
Swanson
Cimber
Garcia
Bass
Mayza
Pop
Pearson

White on the IL until he can take Kikuchi's job, Richards fired into the sun.

I think it was Glenallen Hill who fell out of bed while having a dream about spiders.

Canadian tennis player Peter Polansky had a bad dream about a guy chasing him with a knife in his hotel room in Mexico and jumped off the balcony of a 3rd story window severely injuring 1 of his legs

Yoga isn't what will solve everything.

Berrios needs to be a number 3 honestly. For the rotation to reach it's high end potential he needs to slot in behind Manoah and Gausman and then Bassitt is a perfect #4.

30th highest paid SP, and 3rd on the Jays. If you count Manoah as our 1/2 with Gausman then yeah, he's paid to be our 4th starter.
He was our opening day starter. Don’t kid yourself. He was paid to be a top of the rotation starter not a 4th arm.
