The problem I have with it is guys tend not to be game ready when this tournament happens. Like the olympics are in the middle of a season kind of thing. Not that it prevents injury but guys are just more ready for that kind of action. I'm mostly worried about pitchers. One of our players could be hurt carrying groceries up a flight of stairs, picking up a cracker his young child dropped on the floor, hurting himself on a steak knife (no less than 3 different ways), fixing a drone, sneezing, or panicking after waking up from a nightmare about spiders.
all of those are things that have actually happened to pro athletes.
Injuries are going to happen. Diaz could've hurt himself jumping up and down at a concert or celebrating something with family at a bbq.
Does it suck? Yeah. But the WBC is good for the game and the players that go enjoy it. It needs to better establish itself in the absence of proper baseball competition at the olympics but this tournament has been exciting and is a key potential way to maybe get people into the game that wouldn't otherwise be interested.
You never want to see a guy get hurt, but guys are going to get hurt as a matter of course unless you encase them in bubble wrap every time they step off the field.
Hell, guys get hurt in spring training all the time and that's just as meaningless as the WBC. Vladdy hurts his knee and misses the tournament and nobody cares. But if the injury had happened a week later in a game for DR people would've flipped tables over it. It's silly.
I will add Stroman tripping on a sprinkler head in spring for us and destroying his leg
