Players who have three or more years of Major League service but less than six years of Major League service become eligible for salary arbitration if they do not already have a contract for the next season. Players who have less than three but more than two years of service time can also become arbitration eligible if they meet certain criteria; these are known as "Super Two" players. Players and clubs negotiate over salaries, primarily based on comparable players who have signed contracts in recent seasons. A player's salary can indeed be reduced in arbitration -- with 20 percent being the maximum amount by which a salary can be cut.

If the club and player have not agreed on a salary by a deadline (typically in mid-January), the club and player must exchange salary figures for the upcoming season. After the figures are exchanged, a hearing is scheduled (typically in February). If no one-year or multi-year settlement can be reached by the hearing date, the case is brought before a panel of arbitrators. After hearing arguments from both sides, the panel selects either the salary figure of either the player or the club (but not one in between) as the player's salary for the upcoming season.

The week prior to the exchange of arbitration figures is when the vast majority of arbitration cases are avoided, either by agreeing to a one- or multi-year contract. Multi-year deals, in these instances, serve as a means to avoid arbitration for each season that is covered under the new contract.

Once a player becomes eligible for salary arbitration, he is eligible each offseason (assuming he is tendered a contract) until he reaches six years of Major League service. At that point, the player becomes eligible for free agency.

Toronto Blue Jays Win the World Series

If Texas winning the AL West at +850 isn't bold enough for you, how about Toronto winning it all at +1300?

The Blue Jays haven't won a postseason game since 2016, but they have consistently been one of the better teams over the past three years, making the playoffs in both 2020 and 2022 while missing the cut by just one game in 2021.

As far as offseason moves go, they effectively traded Teoscar Hernández, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Gabriel Moreno for Daulton Varsho, Kevin Kiermaier, Erik Swanson and Adam Macko, improving their defense while also shedding enough payroll to justify paying to replace Ross Stripling with Chris Bassitt in the starting rotation. The net of all those transactions looks like a step in the right direction.

Aside from Stripling, they didn't really lose anything in free agency, so they should be better in 2023 than they were in 2022—especially if José Berríos is able to bounce back from what was a horrific campaign in which he "led" the AL in both hits and earned runs allowed.

What if the Bo Bichette who hit .394 over the final 33 games of last season shows up for the entirety of 2023? Or what if Vladimir Guerrero Jr. gets back to slugging like he did while leading the majors in home runs in 2021?

The Astros and Yankees are understandably the favorites in the AL, but it's hardly a stretch to see Toronto getting it done for the first time in three decades.

Bichette ain't wining $7.5 in Arb-1

Bichette proving he thinks he's bigger then the team. Can't stand this guy's attitude. Thinks he's some superstar player when he hasn't proven anything yet, minus the fact he's a horrible defensive player. I really wish Atkins would've moved him early in the off season and signed one of the SS free agents.

Yeah, his average 4,8 WAR over the last 2 seasons is real trash

Bo isn’t winning this. Jays likely offered him something around the high 5s or $6M. Bo filed and Jays aren’t going to file their original offer because there would’ve no downside for the player to go to arb. Every player would go to arb if the Jays filed their original offer through arb.

You lower your final offer through the arb process to signal to other players that this is what happens when you go to arb. You could have got $6M but now you risk losing $1M if you think you’re worth $1.5M more.

High 5s or $6M is an incredibly fair offer for Bo.

It will be interesting to see if the Jays keep their file and trial practices and/or if Bo is receptive to a last minute deal. Bo could be doing this for show or out of principle to sent the tone for long term negotiations.

Wonder how long until the Yankees announce that Montas is done for the year after undergoing shoulder surgery. Seems like it's only a matter of time. He was damaged goods when the A's dealt him and I'm glad we avoided that landmine.

Oh ya. Ugh that deal reminds me when the Leafs dealt their 1st round pick for Foligno! Dumb GMs. Both damaged goods and they knew it.

Except Foligno wasn't damaged goods. He got hurt in his 2nd game after the trade. We don't need to rewrite history and bring Dubas into a baseball thread.

Stick to the 500 other bash Dubas threads if you feel the need to "push your narrative".

I do think it is safe to say and has been safe to say there will be no discounts with a Bo contract.

Yup. Just take him year to year and if you get a good offer trade him. If not, let him play it out, he is motivated to make the most money possible which means he will play his hardest when approaching free agency.

Save up for a big offer for Ohtani or even Machado if Chapman walks or preferably Soto next offseason.

No way. He was hurt before the trade.

Now that he is set for arbitration can they trade him at anytime?

I believe so. They can trade him anytime.

Years ago the Jays traded for someone that was going to arb but I can’t remember. I believe they agreed to a deal after the trade but before the arb date.

I'll go back to baseball only here, but no....he was not injured. They have to pass physicals, and Foligno said himself that he got injured after the trade.

Let's keep this on baseball, ok? A lot of people in this thread don't give a crap about the Leafs as they cheer for other teams, and they are here for the Jays content only.
