The current coverage of the Kings is definitely a "don't bite the hand that feeds" type of thing. I actually had this issue with Hammond back in the day but he is tough as nails compared to what we have now. The last LAKI guy--forget his name but loved The Simpsons--would even criticize when warranted.
Well, that's well out the window. I don't blame the bloggers one bit: they are just big fans like the rest of us that are either making some money, getting crazy access or both. Seems like a dream job for someone who follows the team religiously anyways. The problem here, as mentioned in this thread, is that there is no real independent 3rd party to really tell it like it is. The last LAKI dude flat out called the Pearson trade "bad asset management" the day it happened. Now you get Clague claimed on waivers in order to get Tynan a look and it's like "Good luck to Clague. Here's a podcast I did with him".
Kings picked up a lot of new fans during the Cup runs that don't know a damn thing about the history of this franchise. This is the shit they get fed now--including the Faust/Fox broadcast--so they think that everything is just fine. Just keep talking about how good the players in Ontario are (until they show how good they actually are once they get up here), the ones in Juniors or Europe and then toss out the 10th 3rd f***ing jersey in the last six seasons to distract even more from the garbage product. While we are at it, put a f***ing drum line in the stands during the games to distract even more.
Hockey has changed, sure, but these new fans don't know what it was like. That 18-36 demo is what they are targeting and most of us on here (anyone that was involved in a Kings message board during the 90s or been on HF since the early 2000's) are past that. "Bark Madness"? We hate it but the Snapchatters love that shit. They want to sell tickets to people that don't have as much responsibility and won't be too tired to go see Arizona come to town on a Tuesday night.
Anyways, those of us long-timers went through years and years of garbage but it finally paid off. What's been going on now for us long-timers now is like when a pro athlete hangs them up at the end of their career because they've already won and the thought of another off-season of training, training camp and then the grind of the season just isn't worth it anymore. Well, watching this franchise feels like we are right back to where we were prior to the Cup wins and it is just a grind to get through it. Having finally been given the ultimate reward as a fan, trying to watch every game feel likes having to go to the gym to stay in shape for no f***ing reason. Like, do I need to see how well Tynan plays on a Sunday night or can I do something--anything--that is more enjoyable? Prior to the Bluc era, I would need to see how Tynan fared but now? Shit...I took the wife to a nice dinner while watching the Chiefs/Broncos game and then just looked at Twitter for highlights of the goals afterwards.
It's going to be a real kick in the balls if Blake fails at this rebuild. Going to make it harder to stay invested in this franchise. Never imagined a time where Kings Hockey wouldn't be one of the most important things in my life but you get to a point where you just keep intently following this shit show and have to ask "Why do I hate myself so much?"
It used to be a badge of honor to be a die-hard Kings fan. Now they are like your favorite indie band from the 90s that sold out and got a big label deal. You hate their new shit and their new fans and all you can do is play the old shit and talk about how much more "real" they used to be.
