It does suck but it had to happen.

In a perfect world the A's remain in Oakland, the Chargers remain in San Diego and the Raiders are in LA with the Rams.
It didn’t, though. Oakland and California helped make sure 11.7 billion of the 12 billion-dollar project was accounted for. Fisher, who inherited the Gap from his dad, which helped him buy the A’s and grow his wealth above 2 billion, wouldn’t help pay the other 300 million, or try to find another solution.

It’s now clear the A’s were just used as leverage this entire time and Fisher had 0 intent to negotiate in good faith with the city of Oakland. I should have seen it from the beginning.

Oakland loses 3 teams in less than 10 years, wow. I’m wondering if Sacramento’s struggles to keep the Kings coincided with the Warriors’ move to SF, Oakland would’ve flirted with the idea of grabbing the Kings.

Also, what’s the Sharks’ current status in SJ?

The Warriors still control the territory. No way was the NBA going to have 2 teams in the Bay.

It’s kinda weird how much less anger there was toward the Raiders - who left twice, compared to the A’s

i wonder how the dodgers feel about the A's moving to vegas, considering they have tons of fans there
Probably similar but not equal to LA getting the Chargers instead of the Raiders.

Kaval was on Sirius MLB yesterday, and it sounds like short of Vegas getting nuked off the map there is a zero percent chance of it not happening, put himself and ownership over as working so hard to try to save things in Oakland but just couldn't get it to work out. Smelled like a lot of bullshit

Sorry to see the A's move, and as a fan of another "Small Market" team I don't look forward to the inevitable flirtation with the Pirates moving once PNC Park is deemed to be antiquated and in need of replacement

Take notice, Rays. Stop f***ing around and build the ballpark in Tampa already. People from out of state whining about the taxes: boo hoo. No one forced you to come here, I'm not content to lose my team because you decided to show up 10 years ago when I've lived here 34

Hillsborough County: shut up and take my money already so we can get this done

Hope not. Hope they continue to add renovations to PNC as long as they can. Most beautiful park in all of baseball.

And what the heck is going on with the Pirates this year eh? 13-7!!!

Kaval has been lying to everyone for over 6 years, why would he stop now.

And looked lookie

Not all sunshine and rainbow farts in Vegas rn.

Also, this is land purchase 6 for the A’s. Didn’t mean anything in the past, so let’s see if and when this falls apart what that asshole Fisher does with 0 leverage.

I don’t blame Oakland for holding its ground. I blame Fisher and Manfred and back to Selig too. And F*** the Giants for their role in the territorial rights crap that kept the A’s from being able to really try in SJ or Fremont. This was all on purpose and they basically Major League'd their way out of Oakland.

Someone asked if A's fans will migrate to the Giants, and I can't see that being a case for most folks. I have an unhealthy little brother complex about the Giants as an A's fan, and I don't think that's uncommon.

First, My condolences.

I don't think there's no Wrong Way for a fan to respond to this kind of BS. It's freaking trauma. There's no right answer to what you do as a baseball fan after that.

Secondly, the role of MLB royally screwing up is massive. MLB screwed up the documents during the merger of AL and NL league offices into MLB, and it changed the meaning of what Oakland agreed to -- that San Jose was part of THE MARKET, so it wasn't a Relocation that required a vote (because the MLB commissioner was dead and they faced a political deadline for funding).

But creating the new MLB constitution in 1999 specifically listed Santa Clara county to the Giants, and didn't for the A's. The OLD documents protected the Giants and A's from a THIRD TEAM in Bay Area. What the A's signed was NEVER intended to exclude the A's from San Jose.

But overall, I agree with Reggie. It's been 32 years since the A's said "If the Raiders move back into the Coliseum, and you don't build us a new ballpark, we have to move."

Howard Terminal is the SEVENTH Oakland stadium attempt within the city, not counting Fremont or San Jose. It's the THIRD Oakland owner, and who knows how many Mayor's and other government administrations. Thirty-Seven MLB stadiums have opened since the Coliseum.

I totally get that "Cities should not be funding stadiums for billionaires." But every knows that SOMEONE WILL to get a team, so you better do it.

Now the most important thing is that idiot Manfred needs to only approve the A's move with a rider that an AL team can return to Oakland with no rights fees to the Giants. Otherwise the Bay Area is going to be a one-market team forever, and that's terrible for the economics of baseball.

Just because someone will do it, doesn't mean I have to do it. Let someone else waste their tax revenue on a rent seeking business that just moves consumer spending from one pocket to another.

Appreciate the condolences and the post. You know more about this than our local media does here in Northern CA, haha.

I have zero confidence any provision will be included to protect a theoretical opportunity for a second Bay Area team.

I see pundits and hopeful others saying, "Well maybe Oakland gets one of the two expansion teams." The ONLY way that happens if if Joe Lacob, owner of the Golden State Warriors, purchases an expansion slot and does it himself. Nashville is a lock, and I bet SLC is the second.

Seeing Reggie say that, especially around the 50th anniversary of the '73 WS win, really sunk hopes and distracted from a fun celebration, and damn it hurt how it happened with seemingly no warning.

Oh, I was actually going to point that out, about "The Narrative." The vast majority of sports media aren't well versed in the business of sports. You see people on the BOH forum on this site who say really clueless stuff -- like bad attendance means a franchise isn't supported and definitely will move (meanwhile, like no tickets were sold during the pandemic and every team is basically "fine" except the three who need new stadiums: Coyotes, A's and Rays). Journalists tend to be pretty rudimentary/dumb unless you find a person who's invested enough to learn the nuances.

It all boils down to Oakland spending hundreds of millions on the Coliseum to get the Raiders back -- after they left originally because the Coliseum didn't work for football and baseball at the same time.

My brain can't comprehend how it cost $500m to build Mount Davis.

Mount Davis ruined the Coliseum for baseball, and the rest of the facility wasn't good enough for the NFL, which is why they left.

Carolina built their NFL stadium for $248 million in 1994, it opened in 1996.
Cleveland built their MLB stadium for $175 million in 1992, it opened in 1994. Comerica in Detroit (opened 2000) cost $317 million.

How does it make any sense to spend $500m on a 30-year old Coliseum addition, instead of building TWO $250 million brand new stadiums at the same site?

NFL stadium in Lot A, MLB in Lot B. When they're done, tear down the Coliseum and put in ramps from BART to each. You secure the future of both franchises for 30+ years, and you have a blue print to do the same thing again in Lots D and C (Like how Philly does it).

There's no way Oakland is getting an expansion team this round. But the "Right to Return" for the American League needs to be established now, because if they don't plan ahead, baseball can never come back. There's no chance that someone could pay both the Expansion Fee, the Stadium cost, AND the territorial rights to the Giants -- which because of the AL-NL merger of 1999, are now exclusive veto rights.

It USED to take 75% of the OTHER LEAGUE to approve it. So 12 of 16 NL teams would have to approve an Oakland team. But now, it's "You have to buy the Giants permission" like in the NHL.

Manfred has made it clear he wants nothing to do with Oakland. He’s been outright disrespectful to the city and fans through this entire process. I really doubt any provisions will be included if (or when) the move happens.

Having only the Giants in one of the most affluent areas in the world seems like a complete waste. Granted I know it isn't exactly easy finding land there, getting it financed and actually building a new stadium especially with the Giants being dicks but c'mon MLB.

Vegas is an absolute dumpster fire. I don't see how locals tolerate it, how tourists other than boomers actually think it's a worthwhile vacation destination, all of these teams moving there will be seen as a colossal mistake in a decade or two.

I know enough about Las Vegas to know it's pure hubris to live there. Look, I get the bill of goods they sold people to relocate there. It's expanding, great. Who cares if it's sustainable, amirite.

Have fun with all the water disputes with your neighbor states who actually own the access to said water if you have a mortgage.

And to be fair, I assume as a Bruins fan you moved west to Las Vegas, I am honestly wondering what drew you there? Especially if you aren't retired and don't have to care about the sustainability of operating a city that size in the desert.
