This team is going to crash and burn when MSL is gone and we have no prospects and nothing left to show for Callahan or MSL on the roster. Until MSL is gone, we will limp along like we have done for most of the last 9 years.

Lundqvist's prime? Who the hell cares? If Talbot can't replace him, find another goalie who can. Mortgaging the future and being in win now mode when we aren't even close to winning anything is just stupid.

A lot of assumptions here.

Our current prospects don't pan out. Our future picks would have panned out. Talbot is a quality NHL starter. Or there will be one out there for the right price.

Callahan basically turned himself into a non asset.

I think Callahan kidded himself that the Rangers would never in a million years trade him. Judging by the reaction in the locker room to the news of the trade, that was probably the delusions of every single player. Callahan gambled that the Rangers would overpay for the C on his chest, and he lost.

Hey if they get to,the finals or anything close that 1st round pick is so low you take the knows elite player to play with Lundqvist and Nash NOW...while they are prime.

This team has no time to rebuild and win during the Lundqvist era. Have a window to win now in the next few.... GO FOR IT

1. Can you prove that the team is somehow going to collapse when MSL leaves?

2. What makes you think a few extra mid-first and 2nd round picks was going to make all the difference between a successful and unsuccessful future?

Adding MSl for this helps our chances marginally in the short run, and hurts us marginally int he long run. The impact isn't nearly as extreme as your hyperbolic assertions.

Something tells me the Rangers aren't done.

If they are willing to make this deal (which I hate, and don't agree with), I can't imagine they're not looking to upgrade at LW and/or C right now.

This team NEEDS to win with Lundqvist in the next 3-4 years before he's no longer elite.

Unless the Rangers were picking top 5 next year (which there is no way it'd happen), they aren't going to get a player that will likely help them in that window.

MSL is a top 10 NHL player, going to be hard to find someone else of his caliber that will get moved in the next year or two.

Giving up a 2015 1st is stupid, especially if this team finishes in the bottom 10. This trade is only good if we get a cup this year or next. Otherwise it's ********.

We've had much worse rosters and not finished bottom-10. Rangers almost never finish bottom-10.

Unless Lundqvist loses a leg in a drag-race accident, we arent finishing that low.

The logic seems flawed that says "It's okay because we have a year to get the first round pick back."

There will BE no getting the first round pick back. That's exactly the point of this trade. Sather has no interest in the future. Sather has no interest in acquiring picks. Sather's interest is in TRADING picks to get pieces NOW.

Given the moves of the last year, it is far, far more likely we lose another first rounder than gain back the 1st rounder that went today.

Point of interest, MSL is only signed through next year. What do you think he's going to ask for when his contract is up? 7? 7.5?

Considering he just strong armed his team (quite dickishly, I will admit) into trading him here, I don't think hes going to leave over here money.

I hear the rangers '14 2nd evolves to '14 1st if they make conference finals. If cally resigns Rangers gets TB 2nd '15 and TB gets rangers 7th '15

I'm okay with this deal.

Paying Callahan 6mil/season for 6 years would have been ridiculous, given that at best he's playing in maybe 75% of our games due to injuries. St Louis gives us another legit scoring threat, so our line up is far more balanced.

Plus he strikes me as a Jagr-type player in terms of longevity. His family is in CT, so its likely he'll want to stick around NYR, he could easily give us 3 more good years at a reasonable cap hit.

The downside is obviously what affect this has on our locker room... which is yet to be seen.

These over reactions are insane. All anyone could talk about for the last 24 hours was not re-signing Cally. Now we traded him for an elite offensive player, only losing draft picks in the process? It sucks for the prospect pool but that's what it takes. Nash is 29, Lundqvist is 32, Girardi is 29. Like it or not, we are in win now mode. Be happy it only took one UFA to be roster player. And we kept our own prospects who are closer to being developed than the unproven draft picks would be.

Ideally we are great next year and the pick we lose is 24-30 anyway.

If Callahan re-signs in TB then NYR get TB 2nd in 2015 and TB gets Rangers 7th in 2015

That helps not having a first IF he resigns.

People bringing up Lundqvist and his prime are spot on. The team has to make a move to win it sometime in the next three years. This is the first move. Sather is going all in.

Going all in, yet we have what exactly down the middle that matches up against the best? Who else carries the puck and provides secondary support when the top 3 guys are taken off the board? Benoit Pouliot ? Come on man....

The Rangers have over a year to recoup the lost draft pick. St Louis makes the team better THIS YEAR AND NEXT!!!!!!!

The same people that **** on Callahan are upset about the deal.

Star players who come here on the backside of their mid 30's always continue their ways like nothing has changed right?

Good. He needs to. We have some replacements in Duclair and Buch for in a few years. Miller looks legit. Kreider finally looking legit. This is the time to go for it and still have a future.

Duclair and Buch have proved nothing but 1 good season and you're ready to pencil them in, yet this years draft picks are 'no big deal' and 'who knows when they'll be ready if ever' ?

Contradictions help one side more than the other.

This is the problem though.

With the addition of St. Louis, does anyone really think this team can compete with Boston or Pittsburgh in a 7 game series? Can they win against either of those teams in the playoffs?

People are too hung up on the draft picks. Unless this team bombs next season, the picks will not make a dent in the future of the team.

WE GOT ****ING MARTY ST LOUIS!!

He instantly becomes our best forward.

The first part is debatable. We have some good, young prospects at the moment, and either or both of those picks can be recouped at a later date. Say we move Boyle and pick up a second. Is the difference between a bright future and a bleak furture entirely based on having a first round pick in 2015? If so, then the team is and always will be ****ed.

Again, the future isn't mortgaged. I'd easily wager we acquire at least one of those picks back in a later trade. Are we on the cusp of winning a Cup? Maybe, maybe not. We're closer than we were before. We're in a better spot than we were yesterday.
