If we dont pick top 5 in 2015 I dont think it makes much of a difference. Sather has a whole year to get that pick back and a 2nd in a so called weak draft doesnt really bother me. Everyone crys out for MSL and we trade for him, in a better deal than was expected, and everyone is up in arms about it? Absurd.

The top 20 in 2015 is really good. Obviously the perceived top 5 (McDavid, Eichel, Hanifin, Barzal, & Strome) are ELITE prospects, but we were not going to get anywhere near them without an epic collapse, which this team is too good for.

Really don't like that 2nd turning into a 1st thing. If that happens thats 3 out 4 1st rounders lost in 4 years.

Really need him to stay there. Want that 2nd.

In the end we're better though. LFG.

That or Slats would pick Jessiman 2.0 in 2015.

You have Nash and Lundqvist in their prime. Time to go for it. Supplementing them with an elite offensive player for another few years will help.

In other news, I will be staying away from this thread. The sky is falling!

yeah i find it a bit ridiculous how over the top some of these reactions are. we gave up a 1st and 2nd for one of the best players in the NHL who actually had a better contract than callahan currently has and is trying to get this summer.

This wouldn't have happened if Cally wasn't such a greedy #######. His demands were unreasonable and i have no sympathy for him at all.

Hate giving up the picks, The deal is a tough one to swallow.

People bringing up Lundqvist and his prime are spot on. The team has to make a move to win it sometime in the next three years. This is the first move. Sather is going all in.

This team is going to crash and burn when MSL is gone and we have no prospects and nothing left to show for Callahan or MSL on the roster. Until MSL is gone, we will limp along like we have done for most of the last 9 years.

Lundqvist's prime? Who the hell cares? If Talbot can't replace him, find another goalie who can. Mortgaging the future and being in win now mode when we aren't even close to winning anything is just stupid.

Move Stralman, Boyle and get a couple of picks. Then go to war.

Picks??? If you're going to war, you need reinforcements.

JT Miller for Dan Boyle! Let's get the ol' TB gang together!.....OK, kidding about Miller...at least for Dan Boyle...

Who is saying "okay?" I'm not trying to apply moral reasoning to a hockey team here.

Forgive me for not being horrified at the prospect of regaining a 2nd for a 4th line center, when we have two of them, one who signed at 1 million for free this offseason.

We gave up a lot for MSL, who hasn't been significantly beneath a PPG since the lockout. You can't just quote ages at me when he's been more productive than most of the league in his late 30's. MSL at 38 is much more effective than Callahan at 28.

The Rangers are probably going to lose Staal next year if they can't re-sign him, my point is, I would bet that we will have a pick in the first round of 2015, irrespective of how we get it.

Yeah, it's a win now move, to a degree. Doesn't meant he fanbase should be mass jumping off of tall cliffs. Try to be enthusiastic for the playoff run.

Picks can be used as assets in two different ways: drafting young, cheap players to hopefully build a successful team in the future, or through trades to reinforce your team in the present. We haven't been doing all that hot with the former, and with the guys we have on the team at the moment, the latter makes sense.

I'm not thrilled with what we gave up. I am thrilled with what we received. I'm also excited.

Im also confused by some of the meltdowns, I thought I was in the Tampa thread for a few minutes.

It really should've been a 2nd in 2015 with the 2014 conditional 1st. St. Louis is great, but it could become three years in a row with no 1st for a single ECF appearance...

Point of interest, MSL is only signed through next year. What do you think he's going to ask for when his contract is up? 7? 7.5?

More details: the 2nd-rounder in 2014 to Tampa becomes a 1st if NYR gets to conf final; if Callahan re-signs in TB then NYR get TB 2nd in 2015 and TB gets Rangers 7th in 2015

Just keeps getting better and better.

So, we can come two series wins short from the cup and we give them a second pick? I see that as a very likely scenario.

Sucks giving up a first but MSL is a huge offensive upgrade and we kept The rest of the roster intact....

Callahan wanted too much money. The fact we debate if he's a third liner or not is testament enough not to pay him 6.8 million dollars per season.

I'm excited for the opportunity to give Lundqvist a lead..... Now go score some goals.

This is true. I'm glad we didn't give up any serious prospects for him... Losing Miller, even Stepan would have been detrimental to the roster as it is right now

I like the trade. Lundqvist isn't getting any younger, and probably has a solid 3-4 years left. St. Louis will help them win that Cup more than the picks will. And it probably came to the point where Sather knew the Callahan signing wasn't happening. The team has a 5 year window here at most in my opinion to win a Cup with Lundqvist and co. Stinks to give up the picks, but with the way Sather has set up this team (which I don't exactly agree with), it's now or never.
