Amazing how many people like this deal. It's like people disregard MSL's age & draft picks . Nilan just said on TSN 690 that he thinks Sather is senile. I totally agree. Do you really think MSL makes us compete with Boston Pittsburgh & all the western powerhouses ?

It gets us closer to doing so, thats for sure.

The options were not great here. You can resign Cally to deal for more than he is worth, watch him put up mid 40 points totals and deal with injuries for the next 6 years. Team stays the same in the short run.

You can trade Cally for picks/prospects, where none are going to be elite. You hurt your team in the short run with no guarantee that it makes you better in the long run.

You can make the deal that we did and upgrade the current team and bring it closer to the elite teams of the league. The mid/late 20's picks we gave up are not helping this team for the next 4/5 years.

This team is closer to being a cup contender than a team who should be looking to sell and rebuild. You have a core of your team in their mid 20's, a couple other prospects who might be ready to join the team next year and an elite goaltender heading towards the backend of his prime.

We have plenty of young solid middle of the lineup forwards with Stepan, Brassard, Kreider, Hagelin, Zucc, Miller. You have a couple other names that appear to be capable of coming in and playing in similar roles in the next couple of years. The moves people seem to be in favor of are likely to result in us eventually adding one or two players similar to that group above. Id rather get the elite player right now and go for it.

Biggest issue is that this trade does not make us contenders. And why are we always making these soft conditions? Reaching the Conf. final? Come on!

Funny, prior to losing 2 games, do you recall how well we were playing, and the teams we beat?

We now have the Art Ross Winner. We SHOULD BECOME contenders.

We have a sick D, sick goalie, and now our offense just added the Art Ross winner. I mean.... am I missing something?

Sure, there are better teams, but we have a lot of skill right now and are very strong in all areas.

Because not all of us want to perpetually rebuild.

HTH.

Lol. What about the future... the future.. the future.

1st round pick omg 1st round pick aaahhh 1st round pick.

Outside of Marc Staal the Rangers have not drafted a stud in the 1st round since Leetch and Kovalev.

AAaah b.b..b..but the 1st rounder

Who gives a **** if they can get NHL ready undrafted free agents and get legitimate prospects via trade and in later rounds.

But the future!!!!

Selective quoting!!!

Sather traded against himself.

Let's trade all of our 1st round picks until 2020 for Ryan Kesler. Good idea right?

MSL does not make us a favorite for the CUP. We need size and scoring for the present and the future.

why trade the picks? Well if Tbay doesn't sign Callahan they gave up the 5th leading scorer for a 1st and a 2nd that's why

well said

It's not just what they have up. It's also the opportunity cost of what Callahan could have been traded for. 4 asset swing. Could have flipped those 4 assets for a young c or PMD.

Basically. Our chance to trade for some picks/prospects turned into is losing even more picks.

Smart trades to restock the youth. I like MSL a lot but he's not the missing piece.

Kreider says Hi, but yeah most are garbage. (because our GM is garbage and can't draft)

If we dont resign MSL in 2015 this opens up a nice amount of space, instead of having Cally at 6+ for another 5 years. Is that worth a pick?

I can't see how anybody could be happy with this trade. I like MSL. Certainly an upgrade over Callahan. But trading two potential 1st round draft picks for a 39 year old is ludicrous. MSL only wanted to come to NYR. Sather was essentially trading against himself. I think Sather has definitely lost it. Sather had other offers for Callahan. Trade Callahan for whatever you can and keep the picks.

Nobody can tell me we couldn't have gotten a bigger, younger player with offensive
potential for two 1st round picks? Utterly ridiculous.

I have played hockey, been following hockey and the NYR for a long time, but it is extremely hard being a fan of this team.

Of course if we win the CUP, all is forgiven !!! Highly unlikely.

I agree 1000% with this. I hate this trade! I had a feeling Sather would do something stupid; and he has, though not THIS stupid. He's lost his mind. This doesn't make the NYR a top contender. Giving up the future for a iffy chance at a Cup run is asinine.

What are the chances Callahan re-signs with Tampa Bay? Highly unlikely since he seems to want to go closer to home, Buffalo.

This should be stickied. You said it perfectly, friend. Just copy and paste this every time sometime cries "The draft picks! Oh the draft picks!"

Wow... We trade our captain + 1st + 2nd rounder for a 38-year old guy. Hope he's worth it, but come on! Why the 1st round pick?

I can see us having St. Louis for two-three more years after this. There's no signs of him slowing down. He obviously will, but I can't see him falling from being a top 10 point producer to a 30 point scorer like that. The guy's insanely durable.

We see the track record with Callahan. He's breaking down. Get what you can from him.

St. Louis was doing wonders for guys like Palat and Johnson in Tampa. He'll do the same for our young guys.

Don't understand giving up a 1st in a deep draft for 1 year of MSL as if he were our missing piece to the cup.

St. Louis is going to be a Ranger for longer than 1.5 years. He has always wanted to be a Ranger and will retire as one. He is not your typical 38 year old.

Sure, there are better teams, but we have a lot of skill right now and are very strong in all areas.

If you compare NYR vs other playoff bound teams, especially in the Western Conference, we are not even in the same ballpark. It's possible that we win a playoff series, but there is no way this team makes it past Pitts or Mon or Boston and makes a deep run at the Cup. Other teams (many of whom are not making deals today) play a dominant game, that leaves average teams in the dust. There is no way MSL helps us match-up better against these teams this year. It'll take a full year or two to get some of the kids in their from Hartford and build a solid team 1st-4th line.

oh sure is. I love the move for a lot of reasons.

Plus, we get to watch MSL put on a show every night! I can't wait...he's a special player.

This was not a win now team. This is a 6-10 seed team that got hot for one month or so. Yes we are better now, although I want to see who picks up the grunt work we lose in Cally, but this is not a cup contenting team.
This comes down to Dolan and the Knicks sucking and a brand new MSG that they spent a billion dollars on fixing up and possibly being empty from the begining of April until end of September!

Guys like Nash, Kreider, Boyle, D Moore, Staal, girardi, McD need to bring toughness and nastiness now they are all more than capable> Carcillo and Dorsett bring plenty too. The team isn't exactly undersized and weak as a puppy. MSL, brass, Stepan, MZA, Nash all need to score. That's what they're here for. The team definitely has a very solid mix of size, skill, speed and scoring. No excuses for a loss in the PO. no crying about too small or too unskilled. We have more than enough overall to compete now, period
