Honestly, this trade doesn't look too bad if Cally re-signs in Tampa as we'd be getting another 2015 2nd rounder.

Taking a breath and stepping away for a second, overpaying by a single pick isn't that bad.

It's not ideal, but the doomsday scenario some on this board are screaming about is ridiculous.

Martin St. Louis is a great player, and the Rangers had to move Callahan. However, the picks given up are absurd. The Rangers are not a Cup contender with St. Louis, and giving up a 1st in a deep draft, and a 2nd with the potential to be a first (meaning 3 straight years without a first) is too much for a 38 year old who demanded a trade to ONLY the Rangers.

Terrible asset management, the Rangers lost this trade big time.

The Rangers prospects aren't that good.

Look around the league. Ours arent that good.

And? What does that have to do with all the good players I named already on the roster? And they're very young. Which was your point was it not? That our future is harmed so egregiously somehow despite all this talent already being in place? We got those prospects with picks btw. The same picks we would continue to have in the future had we not just traded them. And those prospects would likely be about the same as the ones we have now. Late firsts without much superstar potential anywhere while a small handful of occasional 3rd-7th rounders step in and contribute too.

Edit: A late first in 15
A late 2nd (potential first) in 14

Amazing how many people like this deal. It's like people disregard MSL's age & draft picks . Nilan just said on TSN 690 that he thinks Sather is senile. I totally agree. Do you really think MSL makes us compete with Boston Pittsburgh & all the western powerhouses ?

Yes, I do. Assuming they keep Nash and MSL separate except for the PP, this team now actually has two dynamic lines. Teams will have their hands full with having to match up against either player. Nash, probably benefits the most.

And how is Sather senile? Both of those picks should be late round picks that won't factor in for a few years. So right now it's Callahan for St Louis. Down the line TB probably wins the trade, for the next year and a half, this is a clear win for the Rangers.

I'm not saying they definitely beat Boston or Pitt, but it helps them. Can Pitt's D handle two actual scoring lines? I doubt it.

I'd rather make a move like this than sign Callahan long term. Plus, futures only get you so far. You have to make a move to make a run. When you've got Lundqvist on the back end, a solid defense and a few bottom 6 prospects on the way you have to do a move like this. Our Top 6 looks a million times better than before the trade.

Sather was put in a position where he either let Cally go for nada, or for some mediocre player or a 2nd-3rd pick since he obviously wasn't going to meet Cally's demands (and rightfully so). Instead, he decided to go for it some way and tossed in two high picks for MSL. Really don't understand the backlash here. Sure, the picks were a buzz kill but we wouldn't have gotten anything even remotely close to MSL if he hadn't. His options were limited and this was an acceptable way of dealing with it if you ask me.

agree with you 100%... MSL is a game breaker... Sather didn't have much more options so he went all in on MSL and I believe its a very good trade.. annnnd we didn't lose miller so now he can wear the "C"

The thing that makes this trade even more palatable is that we have guys like Duclair and Buch that would be 1st round picks this year if they were in this draft.

I can't see how anybody could be happy with this trade. I like MSL. Certainly an upgrade over Callahan. But trading two potential 1st round draft picks for a 39 year old is ludicrous. MSL only wanted to come to NYR. Sather was essentially trading against himself. I think Sather has definitely lost it. Sather had other offers for Callahan. Trade Callahan for whatever you can and keep the picks.

Nobody can tell me we couldn't have gotten a bigger, younger player with offensive
potential for two 1st round picks? Utterly ridiculous.

I have played hockey, been following hockey and the NYR for a long time, but it is extremely hard being a fan of this team.

Of course if we win the CUP, all is forgiven !!! Highly unlikely.

Wow... We trade our captain + 1st + 2nd rounder for a 38-year old guy. Hope he's worth it, but come on! Why the 1st round pick?

Agreed. Lets hope he seizes the opportunity.

I'm not even that buoyed by this notion even though i agree with you and here's why. it's the same reason I'm not thrilled but also not suicidal over the potential 1st/2nd lost. because they frequently don't pan out and almost NEVER do they even come CLOSE to reaching our uttermost fantasy projections. They certainly never sniff MSL's production

Biggest issue is that this trade does not make us contenders. And why are we always making these soft conditions? Reaching the Conf. final? Come on!

Exactly, and now our top 6 (assuming they separate MSL and Nashty) looks dangerous. Our 3rd line has been really good since Zucc's benching earlier in the season (the Hobbit's been an ace since) and our 4th line as of late (scrath the Philly-game) looks balanced. Also, we have a strong group of D-Men with an elite goalie and an amazing rookie backup who seems completely unfazed by the NHL. This team can do damage in the playoffs. I still don't think we can shake Boston or Pittsburgh, but we are definitely closer now. Shutting down one line is a lot easier than shutting down two...

Why is this a good plan? so maybe in 4 years the picks may play for the rangers? late first round picks are not a sure thing. in fact, they are usually nothing.

I think there are some things here that are being overlooked and barely touched on.

1.) I always thought how great it would be for a St. Louis to be on the Rangers as a mentor for Zuccarello. If there is anyone in the world that could help teach him to be a better play at his stature, its him.

2.) Gary Roberts is a work out fanatic and runs a camp during the offseason that many NHL players attend, mostly Lightning players. This camp has apparently been credited for helping make Stamkos the beast he is. I think his influence on the younger guys on this team will be unmeasurable. Marty always attends this camp.

Watch this video and check out the guys thighs. St. Louis should be a Ranger for at least 3 years imo.

I think Richards will look even better.. his play has started picking up lately... hopefully him and MSL will mesh... again

It's not just what they have up. It's also the opportunity cost of what Callahan could have been traded for. 4 asset swing. Could have flipped those 4 assets for a young c or PMD.

Hurts that it might be two firsts.

Hurts that we threw away two 2nd's for Ryane Clowe last year.

I don't think we'd have a problem to trade a 1st round pick for an ECF visit, maybe even a Cup Final.

That 1st round pick is then a 27th-30th pick.

I like the deal. We'll live without the picks. Does makes it a little uneasy, but I think it's a psychological thing.

im diggin this. 3 reasons.

first, addition by subtraction. i wanted cally gone. that 6 mil per for 6 wasnt worth it for a 3rd liner guy on the decline. love the guy. upstate ny kid and one of my faves but his time had come. good luck cally. rock on :yo: and we did this without adding a young player.

2nd, we got a great scorer. msl is the best player on our roster. hes that good. we needed a scorer. check. a shooter. check. a play maker. check. a pp guy. check. a clutch player. check. proven playoff guy. check. leader. check. were in a win now mode and he makes us better right now.

3rd, draft schmaft. the 2015 1st rounder kinda sucks and the potential 2014 1st same but we suck at drafting anyway mostly. saves me from another WTF moment when we draft the next dylan mcilrath. weve been better after the first round anyway. i think many are overreacting about the draft picks. realistically its a 30 something pick. its not like its the 10th pic . :naughty:

plase remember people, mcdonagh, zuke, nasher, talbot, moore, kristo are all good players that we DIDNT DRAFT. draft is only important if you know how to do it.

remove cally. add msl. we are alot better today. alot.

im happy.

we still need a true 1c though. thats still a sore spot for me.
