Slightly overpaid IMO, but he is the kind of player you overpay. But for the love of god people, don't get hysterical when he scores less than 40 points due to lack of PP1 time (DeAngelo and Shattenkirk are way better PPQBs than Trouba).

Notice how the main board hate is seeping back. Every little decision by the Rangers, every signing, every mention of anything Rangers related has been drawing out lots of Joisy, Pens and Flyers fans forcing them to fall back into their little "player x is overrated spiel".

Before Rangers lucked into the 2OA there was lots of "praise" for the rebuild and rival fans have mostly been silent... but now...

I'd like to think it's jealousy and fear.

I'm cool with it

It’s dumb. The clear trolling in every Rangers related thread is annoying.

One month ago: Trouba on the block. Fans of the other 29 teams: I would love to have Trouba on my team. They go out and make all their offers on the main board.

Trouba gets traded to the Rangers: Fans of the other 29 teams: The Rags always get lucky with players that want to play for them. Some say great deal, others say overrated.

A month later and Trouba isn't signed yet: Sweet, we can get Trouba in FA. I"d give him $8-9 million a year.

Trouba signs with Rangers for $8m: Fans of other 29 teams: Trouba is overrated. Not a top line defender. He's overpaid by $1-1.5 million. Same old Rags always buying players. When will they learn?

Its really out of control. With the salary cap HF now values draft picks AND cap space more than talented players and winning.
Draft picks are extremely important. For 4 straight years we traded our first and second round picks and didnt win. We also signed bad contracts that still haunt us. The main reason why we are in better shape now is because of the draft

I didn't say they weren't important. Many here would rather have a bunch of draft picks than actual good players.

What bad contracts still haunt us?

What bad contracts still haunt us?

As of now:

Staal
Shattenkirk
Smith
(Girardy buy-out, but it's minimal after this season)

In two years we'll have the cap space to hand out new bad contracts and certainly have more evidence if Trouba and Breadman contracts are good.

As for Trouba. I would've liked 7.5 but it is what it is. We got an asset the board was eyeing for a long time. Dude's 25 and top-4 material.
Should be the best defenseman on the team immediately. Now it's game time though. He better step in and take over.

We did also reach the SC final as a result of this. Had we won, this story would be told different and the price we payed considered as reasonable.

But we didnt. Look im not complaining because we had a good run despite not winning a stanley cup. However I was a big supporter of a rebuild. Luckily for us the rebuild worked much better and faster than anticipated.

But it could have. I'll always appreciate the fact that they for it and almost pulled it off.

I think it's too early to say the "rebuild worked much better and faster than anticipated." Too early by like, 4 or 5 years.

Yea people don’t seem to understand that there’s no such thing as a perfect trade for a perfect player, who is signed for a perfect cap hit for perfect term. We made a great trade for a great player. That’s it. Everyone knew he was getting anywhere from 7-9 mil a year, and it ended up being right in between. Doesn’t change much.

Lulzy responses to this on the WPG board. Especially amusing is that I guess on his IG account he reposted a years-old picture from during his holdout that was of a fan holding a sign that said, "I made more money than Trouba today." That he chose to repost that after the pic of him signing is...not being received well over there.

On the main boards as well. If a small-mid market team made this signing, the entire world would be gushing over how great it is for said team to get him signed and what a fair deal it is for both parties.

Because it’s the rangers he now sucks and it’s a terrible deal.

peopole need to stop saying we overpaid. we did NOT overpay. we bought 6 UFA years. he would have easily gotten $9 mil per, maybe even $10 mil next summer as a UFA. so he gets a little more this year than if he went to arbitration but then we get him cheaper for the next 6 years. that is NOT an overpay

Completely agree. In a world where the top UFA gets $12.5M and "leaves money on the table" a 25 y/o top pairing RD absolutely gets at least, at least, $8M on the open market.

People just love to chirp the NYR on contracts and to be fair their history contains a lot of ammunition. But of all the times it's a fair concern, this is not one of those times.
