GDT: NYR Player Development Camp Info

Only looking at the numbers of the prospects, I'm intrigued by Alex Gogolev, Josh Nicholls, and Kyle Stephan.

Gogo (WHL) had 20-45 in 49 games. Nicholls (WHL) had 47-38 in 71 games. Stephan (HJHL) had 37-41 in 32 games to go with 125 PIM.

Really hoping that we can find some diamonds in the rough here. Looking forward to next season already.

There are many of us. Hockey is a brutal game. You need some folks that can intimidate the opposition into giving your skill guys some extra room....but you do need those skill guys that pop pucks into the net.

I like what the Rangers did in this draft. I wanted Bell but oh well. Again, until Gordy proves otherwise he's got my full confidence. It will be interesting to see how the Rangers fill the need for some bigger, meaner players moving forward.

My faith in Clark is starting to dime...he has done well for us but there are teams with better scouts...we can't keep drafting guys just because they are fast. We keep drafting fast guys yet when we play teams with speed we look like we are skating in sand.

Clark drafts 3 small players or players that do not engage physically at all and 1 big player...Bruins draft 5 big players and 2 small players...so, if the big player doesn't pan out which is the likelihood we come out of the draft with no grit...now, everyone will say how easy is it is to obtain grit...I don't buy that at all.

The Hawks get a gritty runt in the 1st and then take risk the rest of the way...but they can afford to do that..

Sabres 11 picks...8 picks are size.

Kings added more size.

Sens, 5 out of 7 size.

Flyers, 5 out of 6 size

Blue's all 4 picks...size.

Leaf's all big boys.

it's nice to go for home runs when you are loaded with the big club or your farm is ready to explode...we have neither...instead of infusing size into our system we went for reaches...you can't win like that.

Bruins are the toast of the East...Pen's still have the most talent but unless MAF turns it around they wont win ****.

Why is that? If he was eligible to be drafted this year, why can't we sign him? And I just read the article on him and he sounds like a boom or bust type of player. I like what I read and hope that he can work on his defensive side of the game.

Nicholls was signed to a NHL contract already.. the other 2 are UFA and i really like Gorolev and Stephan.. i wonder if they will have any chance of getting signed.....

What's the catch with Nicholls? 47 goals in 71 games doesn't just fall into your lap unless there's a reason.

I kept an eye on him while watching the Memorial Cup this year. He has a compete level as well. The SportsNet announcers said the Leafs decided not to sign him because Nicholls did not buy into the team's fitness regime. The announcers further said that, once the Leafs decided not to sign him, Nicholls bought in. The Rangers then jumped in and signed Nicholls.

It just seems like out of all the odd pickups Nicholls seems to be a legit talent. There's no guarantees of course but I don't feel like we're just taking a 1 in 20 shot with him like these boom or bust signings often are. Maybe we just got lucky and stumbled upon a decent prospect :dunno:

I agree that players with skill, speed, size and snarl are very hard to find. And we need these players badly. Yet this was a draft with few picks and all late, crap shoot picks at that.

In that type of scenario I have to give Clark and his guys the benefit of the doubt. I can't blame him for going for home run scoring picks.

You can always use picks in a package to get what you need size wise later. That might be what they are thinking. Every team needs more goal scorers

Yes. Thats just his first year of eligibility. Many players re-enter the draft. For example, the Hawks like the call Andrew Shaw their 19th round pick because he was passed over in 2 drafts until the Hawks drafted him in the 5th round of his third draft.

Gotcha. But if that's the case, why would we bring him to our prospects camp if he isn't already our property and we can't sign him? Seems like a waste of an invite, no?

So that they know who he is, if they should scout him next year....etc. get a closer look at him. Myles Bell was at prospect camp last year and was drafted this year.
 
Someone was saying there's actually a loophole in which the Rangers could sign Tolchinsky, but I dunno if that's accurate
 
Really interested in Gogolev. May not get signed, but to an AHL contract? Also liking that Malcolm attended & also liking big defenseman Vojtech Mozik from the Czech Republic. An absolute punishing defender & I think he'll get some notice once the scrimmages come. If anyone were to get a contract out of this, I feel he should be a nominee.

Hey guys! I am new here but I can tell you about Tolchinsky. Could be the best stickhandler in the OHL. Kid even has youtube videos doing puck tricks when he wasn't even a teen. He practices all day, every day. I have never seen anybody work as hard as he does, ever. Sure he is small, but try and hit him. He is strong on the walls even against the biggest players. He doesn't spend a lot of time in the defensive zone because the coaches along him to get behind the other teams D. He had a little PK time and is he forces the other team to keep their passes crisp or he can and will take it. Fantastic kid off the ice too. I would appreciate any info you guys can pass along about his performance down their at camp. A total sham that he wasn't drafted...
 
I read an article about a diminutive forward being compared to MSL every draft it seems, and then they rarely work out. Kid seems to have a lot of tools, hopefully he is one of the successful ones.

Based on the last CBA, Tolchinsky could sign with somebody from now up until the OHL regular season starts, even though he has remaining draft eligibility. This is how the Sharks signed Michael Sgarbossa, ditto the Kings with Martin Jones. If Tolchinsky doesn't sign by the the start of the OHL season, then he'd go back into the draft pool for 2014.
