I like Del Zotto. Doesn't change the fact that he's been a 6/7 under AV and playing the worst hockey of his young NHL career.

I think that's got a lot to do with AV. Basically every defenseman has looked worse and that includes McDonagh who struggled for awhile (but usually gets a free pass).

Selling low isn't getting this team any closer to the elite teams in the league.

i think people are gonna really like klein and he'll be a fan favorite...

i was hoping to get back more for mdz but that was wishful thinking based on zero reality. cause reality is he's been awful for 3 of the last 4 years and every time you actually see him play his value goes down. so he was only 'worth' more if you hadn't paid attention since his rookie year...

another bad draft pick in the long line of bad draft picks...should have never picked him in the first place (carlsson) and should have traded him before his lack of iq took over.

good luck to him in nashville but his ability to hit the net on 1 out of every 20 shots attempted won't be missed

MDZ didn't exactly set the world on fire last year either for a PMD under Torts. There really wasn't much of an alternative here, unfortunately but we did get a guy back that helps our team. Rangers have taken a while to get the new system but they've looked a lot better lately.

So is klein really an upgrade? I haven't seen him much but just by randomly reading the guy is 29 as opposed to del zotto who's 23. Was this really a good trade?

Actually I would say the team is better today w Klein. They don't have a 3rd pair that's shaky anymore. Klein will be steady while dz makes mistakes like the tbay goal that cost them the game. He's got talent but it wasn't going to work in ny

He was a legitimate top four defenseman logging 23 minutes a game at the age of 22. He was fine. People would have freaked out if we made this trade last year. Now Klein comes in and he gets to adjust to the new system.

I don't like selling low. It's not the long term answer. People wanted guys like Nash and Lundqvist out of here after the slow start, I'm glad we waited that out.

Yes.

MDZ is arbitration eligible and is on the last year of a 2.9M contract. If you want to pay a 6/7 D (on this team) more than 2.9M (it'll be more) then we should've kept him. Don't see him improving much here under AV. Klein is a different type of player - stay at home, rugged, 3/4 R D. Better for this team now.

I wouldn't have minded this trade last year either. It addresses something we need (another R D) that we lost (Sauer) over something that MDZ hasn't become (a PMD with PP skills). MDZ just wasn't what we needed him to be and he isn't anywhere near Nash or Hank on the depth chart.

i kind of like the negative reaction to this deal...in recent years the immediate reaction to every trade is zomg sather is a wizard...zomg sather fleeced <insert team> and then 20 people post that stupid ass pic of sather with a magic wand and top hat...

then fast forward 3 months, reality sets in that no one knew the player we were getting and that player in fact blows and sather was the one that got fleeced and we spend the rest of that guys rangers carry hoping we can trade him for a 3rd round pick.

so maybe just maybe people not thinking slats fleeced the other team is a good thing.

Klein already played in a man-to-man system and has for nearly his whole career. The adjustment for him moving from Trotz to AV will be easier than the adjustment was for guys moving from Tortorella.

Don't get a chance to watch a lot of Nashville but I've read they play a zone collapse.

MDZ gave the rangers good looks which is one of the requirements of being a ranger. is klein good looking enough to wear a rangers sweater????

Ha. I was at that game. Nah, I watched them for a few years while I was living there. No zone collapse. Checked in with my buddy who lives there today and is a huge fan, and I actually asked him specifically what system Trotz has them running these days. What I told you is what he told me. It sounds like they're running this (from that guys defense descriptions)

Instead, some teams have adopted hybrids where D1, D2*and F1 will play man-on-man down low and F2*and F3*will collapse in the slot and play zone
