I've been wanting to say this. We keep asking where the offense will come from on the back end - and, in some lights, it's a very valid question - but let's not lose site of how the D really creates offense. It's by keeping the puck out of our end altogether and getting it out quickly when it is there. That is what Klein does. He does have a decent, simple first pass. He's not going to sauce it down the middle to a streaking man, but he's also not going to cough it up and get pinned in his end. He'll get it out. And with his speed and ability to close gaps, he'll help keep it out as well. No matter how you slice it, less time in our end, more time in the offensive zone, especially trying to be a possession team, can only lead to good things.

Ignoring age and where they were drafted and just looking at the contributions of the player departing versus the contributions of the player we're receiving, this trade is going to instantly make us better. Doesn't matter who Klein plays with. Our defensive depth and stability is greatly enhanced. He genuinely could play with McD and do well. He can play with Staal to form another strong shutdown pairing. He can play with Moore or Allen to add stability to a young, learning player. Wherever he plays, we will be better.

I couldn't agree more. His knowledge of defensive hockey, playing without the puck will instantly pay dividends. You would be surprised (or maybe not) how important the simple play, pass, chip, stickcheck can make all the difference.

And while it's true, our blueline has helped get shots to the net, and got more involved in production,... it all starts off our defense. I won't deny our success of late has come from us producing goals, but it all starts with defending in our zone and getting it out. We got away from that early in the season for whatever reason. It is what we are known for,... for many years now. Strong defensively. Picking up Klein and losing DZ is a win win and instantly makes us a better team.

Bad asset management all around.

This trade doesn't make us much better in any way.

I guess in the end this was an AV decision. He just did not like DZ. I really did not want to see DZ go, but if this helps make a happier locker room enviorment & this Klein can play decent D than I can't be too unhappy about this..

Sometimes guys just need a change of scenery. DZ won't have to be the number one in Nashville. I have no predication's on what will happy with DZ's play.

I don't like the trade, but I don't think its awful like some people think. Hope Sather doesn't use this as an excuse to not pay Girardi because Klein and Stralman are not #1 RHD. We might as well tank if the plan is to trade for Klein as Girardi's replacement.

This is an awful trade. If they wanted a right handed shot so bad, they should have traded him for Franson,at least he has some offensive skill.

Franson is absolute garbage.

Keep that abortion of a player away from my team.

Franson is a bad defender though. Klein, from my understanding, is Girardi-esque with some extra toughness. If that's true, this is a good trade, especially with that caphit. It's not like MDZ was producing anything anyway. Traded a bad offensive bad defensive dman for a bad offensive good defensive dman. MDZ will also make more money than Klein pretty soon.

Franson is terrible defensively. But where else are we getting points from on the back end?Staal?Girardi?

Its great Klein is good defensively, but now we are even going to struggle even more getting any type of scoring from our defense(besides McD)

I think we could have and should have gotten more for DZ.

Must be more than meets the eye here. Why give up on a 23 YO skilled d-man otherwise? Here's an idea.........play a guy out of position, bench him when he does not thrive, killing his trade value, then deal him for Kevin Kline. Brilliant!

If he plays anything like Sauer he'll be a welcome addition.

Sad to see MDZ go. Hope he kills it in Nashville.

Staal and Girardi are both 25-30 point defensemen. Staal has been very rusty, but he's improving. Girardi has even scored 10 goals in a year. These players aren't as bad offensively as you're making them out to be.

As far as getting more for Del Zotto... I really fail to see how we could have gotten more. We traded a 2nd pair D for a 2nd pair D. It's a hockey trade. Can't see how the value gets any more even than that.

And our new 2nd pair D is locked up for 4 years at less than what DZ would have gotten this summer.Pretty lateral move. Sure we lose some "offense" but we gain a much more reliable D-Man in Klein. If we had better forwards I'm sure our D would have some better numbers offensively.

Probably already posted (I don't feel like looking through so many pages), but I wonder if he and Dorsett will become buddies now haha

It's literally sad how little you guys show you know about other teams and players in this league.
