Yea, Im not complaining. I've always been a fan of steady, stay at home guys who mix it up when the time calls.

What perplexes me a bit is how this acquisition fits in the scope of the Rangers style of play. Seems like he would've been a really solid fit in the last regime. But now? Wasn't the flavor of the month D-men who could skate, jump up in the play, contribute to the offense? I thought they'd be on the lookout for a better version of Del Zotto. This guy looks like quite the opposite.

Did Sather and AV finally succumb to the constant defensive deficiencies that have plagued this team? Did Sather even consult AV? Did he just grab the first guy that was offered up that could be mistaken for a top 4 RD?

As usual, left with more questions than answers thanks to this GM.

yyyyyeeep

don't get it. seemed like they cared more about the handedness of the player than how the player played? unless they think there's more upside there, OR his mere presence will unlock Moores offensive ability and therefore be a net gain.

i still dont get this.

And the point remains, looking for a 1st round draft pick from one team, picks up a 30 year old defenseman from another.

Whats the plan?

To improve the team? Trade an asset that doesnt have enough value for the most valuable return you can get?

In this case he wanted return of either a first rounder or a top 4 RD. He found one.

And can we stop calling Klein 30 when he turned 29 a month ago? Thanks

So acquire an asset that can help the team in a number of years, or acquire one that can help right now. Whatever, flip a coin.

As long as he can clear the front of the net, which MDZ and most of our other D-men are incapable of, it's not a bad move.

There's nothing wrong with taking the best deal for a guy who is on his way out one way or the other, but you have to admit there is a big discrepancy between a 1st rounder and a 29 year old defensemen. One fills a need right now, the other may fill a need in the future. It's a conflicting ideology. You would think he would either shop DZ for the best deal that helps the team now, or the best deal that returns assets for the future, not both.

As BRB said, what's the plan? Is there a plan?

There ya go... He was able to turn Del Zotto into a very reliable right handed second pair option that is locked up for under 3 million for the next 4 years. He is much more than a "30 year old defenseman".

This player thrives in his zone and I think will add stability to the defensive zone where we have seen too much 'running around' this season, and thank god it finally broke up the awful combination of MDZ/Moore, now we have three reliable pairings.

Ofcourse, I have no way of knowing, but in my opinion MDZ regressed and we were never going to get a first round pick for him.

I always feel like people always overrate their players value in trade speculation and it seems like there are people that think MDZ was worth more than he is.... I'm thrilled to get Klein back in return

Well, if a 1st round pick is what Sather truly desires, it can still be had if he trades Girardi and/or Callahan. Unfortunately, I think he will be scrambling to re-sign both on July 1.

perhaps because you've never seen Klein play? He is a good player. He's good enough to play 2nd pairing. He's good enough that AV was like "dang, that guy is such a pain to play against. if you can grab him Slats..." (someone mentioned AV having some play in all this). If you aren't familiar with Klein, don't whine and give him time.

Does this guy hit?

did you see him wreck Boyle and then pummel Dorsett afterwards? (videos were linked above)

can't say a 1st in Sather's hands is even necessarily a good thing.

Has everyone been watching Delz

The only reason he was in the lineup was Slats needed to try to showcase him. If it was a merit based lineup decision he would be on the bench. Personally me thinks DelZ has not taken care of himself. Out late..girls and margaritas. Last year and this season he has been a shell of himself in year one when he was all rookie 1st team. He had to go...so Toronto looked..Colorado looked..Edmonton Looked...and they all saw what was plan and simple..a former offensive, mobile, beat the forecheck Dman who has lost it.His value was nil...Do not know enough about Klein..looks interesting and I'm curious how this makes Johnny Moore better. Anyway on to the next decision..what to do with Cally. If you look at the situations he is not the main man as we are used to seeing. I believe between Cally and Girardi..I sign Girardi. Almost impossible to trade Cally..so I see a cap savings from richards and cally of about 12 million and then lets go shopping to find a top 6.

Very excited by this trade. I honestly didn't think we'd be moving Del Zotto until the draft, or maybe not at all, and while I don't believe myself to be a part of the Del Zotto hating camp, it did seem to be getting more and more obvious with each game that 1) Av and Del Zotto do not mesh, and 2) Del Zotto's defensive game is awful right now. Maybe he thrives in Nashville, and if so, I still won't be upset, because I have seen nothing this season to indicate that he was ever going to turn it around here. I also really like Klein and think he brings everything we've needed from Del Zotto.

Supposedly he can also skate. Not that he is an offensive threat, but can close the gaps in the neutral zone, bluelines. People worrying about offensive production from our back line, seem to forget what has turned our season around. And that is being solid defensively. Now and in the playoffs, that is the recipe for success. Losing Del Zaster, and gaining Klein will be such a marked improvement in our progress moving forward. With this one trade, I see alot more wins.

I don't see how Del Zotto improves in Nashville with the depth they have. He'll be playing third pairing minutes for sure. Maybe, big maybe, on the PP. Perhaps, the Western style play will open his game up a bit.

A first rounder from the Avs, or a 30 year old defenseman from Nashville. Whoever calls him back first.

A man with a plan.

Or, perhaps, Colorado wasn't willing to meet that price, so management felt that. for everyone involved. make this deal, or it's also not available down the road.
